What Skull Fractures Can (and Can’t) Reveal About Cause of Death in Archaeology

A fractured skull in an archaeological burial can tell researchers when the bone broke relative to death, and sometimes what kind of force did it. It cannot, on its own, tell them that the person died from the injury, that they were murdered, or what the manner of death was. The fracture is evidence to be weighed, not a verdict.

The short version: three questions, three levels of confidence

Skeletal trauma analysis moves through a sequence, and confidence drops at each step:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. What is the damage? Location, extent, and shape can be described directly from the bone.
  2. When did it happen? Healed injury, injury while the bone was fresh, or damage after burial. This is an inference from bone condition and context.
  3. What caused it? A possible mechanism such as blunt force or a projectile may be suggested by the pattern. It may also stay undetermined.

“Cause of death” sits beyond all three. The American Academy of Forensic Sciences’ Academy Standards Board makes the boundary explicit in ANSI/ASB Standard 147, Standard for Analyzing Skeletal Trauma in Forensic Anthropology (first edition, 2024). It sets requirements for documenting, describing, interpreting and reporting skeletal trauma, including timing and mechanism, and states: “This document does not address cause and manner of death.”

Timing: healed, perimortem, or post-depositional

Why timing is an inference

No fracture carries a timestamp. Researchers separate three situations by examining the bone’s morphology and the setting it came from:

  • Excellent customer service:Our pursuit is helping student and leaner get higher level of medical study and make it easily to absorb knowledge with it
  • Healed or healing (ante-mortem): the person survived the injury long enough for bone to respond. This shows survival, not death from it.
  • Perimortem: the bone still behaved like fresh, living bone when it broke. This window is around the time of death, but it is defined by bone properties, not by a precise moment.
  • Post-depositional (post-mortem): damage from soil pressure, excavation, handling, or other taphonomic processes after the bone had dried and lost its fresh-bone behavior.

The Chartered Institute for Archaeologists’ Updated Guidelines to the Standards for Recording Human Remains recommends distinguishing ante-mortem trauma from post-mortem damage and stresses taphonomic context in doing so.

What a numerical method does and doesn’t show

A 2020 study, “Distinction between perimortem and postmortem fractures in human cranial bone,” identified nine traits associated with fresh fractures and built a probabilistic decision algorithm from them. Its authors reported 87% accuracy. That figure belongs to that study’s method and sample. It is not a general success rate for interpreting archaeological skulls, and no population-level figure for how often skull fractures establish cause of death turned up in the sources reviewed.

Mechanism: what the pattern can suggest

Fracture location, distribution, and shape can point toward a type of force. A 1996 International Journal of Osteoarchaeology paper, “Applying forensic techniques to interpret cranial fracture patterns in an archaeological specimen,” examined a skull from a historic cemetery in Memphis. It discusses radiating fractures, concentric heaving fractures, and bevel direction as features useful for distinguishing gunshot trauma from blunt trauma. The paper is also instructive as a caution: it presents the case as an example of how a fracture pattern can be misinterpreted.

The practical lesson is that these features work in combination. A single bevel or crack line is not standalone proof. Possible mechanisms include blunt force, projectile, sharp force, thermal effects, or a taphonomic explanation, and “undetermined” is a legitimate conclusion.

Does a fracture at the time of death prove the person died from it?

No. A study of the Schild site in west-central Illinois (pre-Columbian Amerindian remains, roughly AD 700–1200) is the clearest example. Its title says it all: “Detecting violence in the archaeological record: Clarifying the timing of trauma and manner of death in cases of cranial blunt force trauma.” On closer forensic analysis, confidence that the cranial fractures occurred at the time of death diminished. The authors caution that perimortem fracturing does not always represent an injury at the time of death and is not necessarily homicide.

So a fracture can contribute to a picture of violence or fatal injury, but timing alone cannot carry the conclusion. Cause and manner need wider assessment, including other injuries, burial circumstances, and whether alternative explanations fit.

Context decides how far an interpretation can go

Axis What to ask Typical outcome
Timing Healed, fresh-bone, or post-depositional? Calibrated inference, not certainty
Mechanism Blunt, projectile, sharp, thermal, or taphonomic? A possible mechanism, or undetermined
Morphology Location, radiating or concentric lines, bevel direction, fresh-fracture traits Read together, never alone
Context Burial conditions, preservation, other trauma, post-depositional processes Can strengthen or overturn the reading

How to read (or write) a claim responsibly

  • Describe the observable damage first, before naming a cause.
  • State timing and mechanism with calibrated language such as “consistent with” or “possibly.”
  • Do not convert a possible mechanism into a cause or manner of death without evidence beyond the fracture.
  • Treat any reported accuracy rate as tied to its own method and data.

For deeper reading, Handbook of Forensic Anthropology and Archaeology is a relevant reference, though it is not needed to follow the points above.
