What Skills Should You Build Alongside a Computer Science Degree?

A computer science degree gives you computing foundations; the complementary skills that make those foundations useful at work are communication, collaboration, problem-solving, planning, professionalism, ethical technology use, inclusion, leadership, and continuous learning. Build them through the projects and experiences you already have—team coursework, internships, clubs, labs, and independent work—rather than treating them as a second list of credentials.

Choose the emphasis by the role you want. A software engineer needs code-review habits, design documentation, feedback, and delivery planning. A data, security, product, research, or infrastructure role will shift the balance. The goal is demonstrable practice: a shipped result, a clear design note, a team deliverable, or a presentation that shows how you work with people.

Start with a broad baseline, then specialize

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) career-readiness framework names eight broad areas: communication, critical thinking, teamwork, professionalism, leadership, technology, career and self-development, and equity and inclusion. It is a useful baseline for a student, not a universal checklist or ranking for every computing job.

Purdue’s computing-focused cross-disciplinary skills resource puts particular emphasis on collaboration and teamwork, communication (including technical writing), and project management. Together, these frameworks point to a practical test: can you understand a problem, make a sound technical choice, explain it, coordinate with others, deliver reliably, and keep learning?

Use that test to select opportunities. An experience is especially valuable when it is relevant to your target role, gives you repeated practice, and leaves visible evidence. If your coursework already supplies substantial solo coding, another isolated tutorial may add less value than a team project that requires planning, review, and documentation.

Communication: make technical work understandable

Write for the next person

Technical writing is not a cosmetic extra. Write README files that state the problem, setup, assumptions, and limitations. Add concise issue descriptions, pull-request summaries, architecture notes, and test plans. A teammate should be able to understand what changed, why it changed, and what remains unresolved without reconstructing your thought process from source code.

Explain decisions to different audiences

Practice a two-layer explanation. First give the non-specialist outcome, risk, or cost; then provide the implementation detail for technical colleagues. In a presentation, state the decision, alternatives considered, evidence, and trade-offs. Avoid hiding uncertainty behind jargon. Asking a clarifying question before presenting a solution is also communication competence.

Build a small communication portfolio

  • A one-page design note for a project decision.
  • A before-and-after explanation of a bug and its fix.
  • A short presentation or demonstration aimed at someone outside your specialization.
  • A project README that another student can follow from a clean environment.

Teamwork and collaboration: deliver as a group

Coordinate interfaces and ownership

Effective teams divide work around clear interfaces, not vague promises to “split the coding.” Define who owns each component, what inputs and outputs it exposes, and when an integration point is due. Track dependencies and surface a blocked task early instead of silently missing a deadline.

Give and receive useful feedback

Code review is a practical exercise in professional collaboration. Comment on correctness, maintainability, security, and clarity; explain the reason for a requested change; and distinguish a must-fix issue from a preference. When you receive feedback, ask for clarification, apply the useful part, and document a disagreement respectfully if a trade-off remains.

Handle disagreement and diverse viewpoints

NACE describes teamwork as building collaborative relationships, sharing responsibility, and using diverse perspectives. In practice, summarize the competing proposals, agree on constraints, and choose a decision owner or decision rule. Make space for quieter members and check that a conclusion reflects the group’s evidence rather than the loudest voice.

Critical thinking and problem-solving: show your reasoning

Define the problem before choosing a technology

Write down the user, desired outcome, constraints, and how success will be measured. Separate a symptom from a root cause. For a performance issue, for example, establish a baseline and identify the bottleneck before replacing a component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare alternatives explicitly

List at least two plausible approaches and compare them on complexity, reliability, security, cost, performance, and future change. Record assumptions and unresolved questions in a design note. This makes your reasoning reviewable and teaches you to justify a solution rather than merely produce one.

Use evidence and revise your view

Test assumptions with a small experiment, a reproducible benchmark, a user conversation, or a focused search of documentation. State what the evidence does not show. A solution that is narrower but verified is often more professional than an ambitious solution built on untested premises.

NACE’s Job Outlook 2025 survey summary, published by a university career center, reported that nearly 90% of responding employers sought evidence of problem-solving on student resumes. That is an employer preference in a survey—not the share of CS jobs requiring the skill, a hiring guarantee, or proof that problem-solving alone causes employment success.

Project planning: turn ideas into dependable delivery

Break work into milestones

Convert a large assignment into increments that can be demonstrated: requirements, a thin working slice, tests, integration, and release. Estimate each task, identify dependencies, and include time for review and debugging. A milestone should produce something observable, not merely a promise that work is “in progress.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Track risk and communicate early

Keep a short risk list: uncertain requirements, an unfamiliar library, data access, integration points, or a deadline that cannot move. Give a concrete update when a risk changes—what happened, its impact, and your proposed adjustment. Early escalation gives a team options; a last-minute surprise does not.

Practice lightweight project management

Use an issue tracker or shared board, but do not confuse tool activity with planning. Define “done,” assign an owner, and close the loop with a demo or review. Purdue’s resource identifies project management as a valuable skill for individual contributors, not only for formal managers.

Professionalism and career self-development

Build reliability

  • Meet commitments or renegotiate them before they become missed deadlines.
  • Keep work reproducible: record setup steps, versions, and known limitations.
  • Ask for help with a focused description of what you tried and where you are blocked.
  • Use feedback to change your process, not just to patch one assignment.

Reflect and choose the next gap

After a project, note what you can now do independently, where you needed help, and what evidence you can show. Compare that list with entry-level postings in your intended area. Select one or two gaps for the next term instead of attempting every competency at once. NACE places career and self-development alongside professionalism because career management is an ongoing practice, not a one-time application task.

Technology, ethics, and adaptability

Learn tools in service of a problem

Technology changes faster than a degree curriculum. Learn a new language, framework, or platform when it helps you meet a defined requirement, and explain why you selected it. Transferable concepts—interfaces, data structures, testing, version control, operating systems, and security—help you adapt when a tool changes.

Use technology responsibly

NACE includes using technology ethically and effectively. Consider privacy, authorization, accessibility, security, data provenance, and potential misuse. Do not copy a dependency, dataset, or generated output into a project without checking its license, accuracy, and implications. Document what you used and what you verified.

Inclusion and leadership are everyday engineering skills

Leadership does not require a managerial title. Facilitate a meeting, clarify a decision, mentor a classmate, or remove a blocker for the team. Inclusive practice means inviting different perspectives, designing accessible interactions where possible, and ensuring credit and responsibilities are shared fairly. These behaviors improve the group’s ability to detect errors and use each member’s strengths; they are also explicit elements of NACE’s framework.

Choose skills by the role you want

Broad frameworks establish a baseline, but the working context determines the best mix. Use job descriptions, conversations with practitioners, and the tasks in your target specialization to set priorities.

Target area Emphasize alongside core CS study Evidence you can produce
Software engineering Code review, technical design, testing strategy, planning, feedback, maintainability Reviewed pull requests, a design note with trade-offs, release notes, a team repository
Data and machine learning Problem framing, statistical reasoning, experiment documentation, communicating uncertainty, responsible data use Reproducible analysis, an experiment log, a plain-language findings brief
Cybersecurity Risk analysis, documentation, incident communication, ethics, cross-team coordination Threat model, remediation plan, tabletop exercise summary
Infrastructure and reliability Operational planning, monitoring, incident response, automation, clear handoffs Runbook, post-incident review, tested deployment or rollback plan
Product or user-facing technology Requirements discovery, presentation, stakeholder communication, accessibility, prioritization Problem brief, user-informed prototype, decision record
Research or graduate study Literature analysis, experimental design, technical writing, collaboration, reproducibility Research report, reproducible code, poster or talk

The table is a planning aid, not a claim that any role requires every item. Read several current postings in your chosen area and look for recurring tasks and language.

Make a team course count

  1. Rotate planning, documentation, presenting, and implementation responsibilities rather than assigning one person to each role for the entire term.
  2. Write a short design note before coding; include alternatives, trade-offs, and unresolved questions.
  3. Use peer or code review with specific comments and a record of how feedback changed the work.
  4. End with a demo and a retrospective that records one process improvement for the next project.

Select extracurricular work strategically

Prefer an opportunity that fills a demonstrated gap or exposes you to people outside your immediate technical specialty. A club project that ships a small feature with a designer or domain expert may teach more than collecting another attendance certificate.

Use internships and labs as evidence

Ask for assignments that include planning, documentation, testing, or stakeholder communication. Keep a private record of the problem, your contribution, constraints, and measurable result so you can later describe the work without exposing confidential information.

Build evidence that fits a resume and an interview

Employers cannot infer a skill from a course title alone. Turn practice into concise evidence using an action, context, and result:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  • “Coordinated three contributors around a documented API, resolved integration conflicts, and delivered the final feature by the demo date.”
  • “Compared two storage approaches in a design note, measured the relevant workload, and selected the simpler option because it met the stated constraint.”
  • “Wrote a setup guide and test checklist that allowed a teammate to reproduce the project on a clean machine.”

Keep claims accurate and specific. Do not convert a class exercise into professional experience or claim a metric you did not measure. A portfolio page can link the artifact, explain your role, and state limitations; a resume can summarize the same evidence in one or two lines.

How to interpret the employer survey figures

The NACE Job Outlook 2025 summary reported that nearly 80% of respondents sought evidence of teamwork on student resumes and nearly 90% sought evidence of problem-solving. The cited summary covered 237 total respondents, including 162 NACE employer members, representing 19.2% of eligible member respondents.

Those percentages describe what surveyed respondents said they wanted to see on student resumes. The survey is not identified in the summary as CS-specific, and it does not establish the percentage of CS jobs requiring either skill, the percentage of graduates hired, or a causal effect on employment. Use the figures as a reason to make your evidence visible—not as a promise about an individual outcome.

An achievable development plan

Next four weeks

  • Choose a target role and review several entry-level descriptions.
  • Identify one communication gap and one collaboration or planning gap.
  • Write a design note for your current project and request structured feedback.

Next academic term

  • Join or form a team that includes a non-CS stakeholder, designer, researcher, or domain specialist.
  • Rotate planning, presentation, and documentation duties.
  • Ship a small, complete deliverable and preserve the relevant artifacts.

By the end of the year

  • Complete a retrospective showing what changed in your process.
  • Update your resume with two or three evidence-based examples.
  • Recheck target postings and select the next gap; stop pursuing skills that do not serve your direction.

An optional software-engineering book

For students specifically considering software engineering, No Starch Press publishes The Missing README: A Guide for the New Software Engineer by Chris Riccomini and Dmitriy Ryaboy (ISBN 9781718501836). The publisher describes coverage of workplace practices beyond programming, including working with codebases, technical debt, testing, code review, design documentation, planning, and interpersonal skills. It is optional, is not a requirement for a CS degree, and is not a guide to every CS career.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Collecting labels instead of practice: a certificate does not substitute for a project in which you planned, communicated, and delivered.
  • Listing “teamwork” without a story: explain the coordination problem, your responsibility, and the result.
  • Over-specializing too early: keep core computing knowledge strong while adding role-relevant complementary skills.
  • Ignoring documentation: undocumented decisions make collaboration and maintenance harder.
  • Chasing every framework item: use the broad baseline to find gaps, then choose the next one or two skills that match your intended work.

The strongest complement to a computer science degree is not a generic collection of “soft skills.” It is a repeatable way of turning technical knowledge into reliable work with other people: define the problem, reason from evidence, communicate the decision, plan the delivery, welcome feedback, and keep learning.
