What skills should software engineers learn as AI changes IT services?

Software engineers should deepen core engineering judgment, then learn to use and verify AI tools safely in real delivery work. Add one adjacent foundation—security, cloud, data, or DevOps—and learn applied AI engineering only if your target role builds AI-enabled products. No single assistant, prompt formula, certification, or specialization is essential to everyone.

What AI changes in software work—and what it does not

Generative AI can draft code, translate between languages, explain unfamiliar files, produce tests, and accelerate documentation. That changes how work is distributed: engineers may spend less time typing routine code and more time specifying behavior, checking results, integrating components, and operating systems. It does not remove the need to understand requirements, architecture, failure modes, security, or maintenance.

Google DORA’s 2025 research describes AI’s primary role in software development as “that of an amplifier.” The study drew on more than 100 hours of qualitative research and survey responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide. An amplifier can increase the effect of a well-functioning organization—or make weak testing, unclear ownership, and poor coordination more visible. Treat AI adoption as an engineering-system change, not as an automatic productivity switch.

eu-LISA’s 2026 report makes the practical implication explicit: organizations need regular evaluation of coding tools and adequate resources for reviewing generated code. Its 9 July 2026 announcement puts the decision this way: “The key question is not only whether to use these tools, but how to use them in a way that supports software delivery while managing the associated risks.”

The skill map: what to learn and why

Skill domain What you should be able to do Where it matters How quickly practices change
Core engineering and judgment Clarify requirements, design systems, read code, test behavior, debug, and make maintainability decisions. Every software role, whether or not AI tools are used. Relatively stable; languages and frameworks change around it.
AI-assisted development and verification Select suitable tasks, inspect generated code, test changes, and manage quality and security risks. Any team using coding assistants or generated documentation. Fast-changing; tool capabilities and policies require periodic reassessment.
Data literacy and interpretation Assess data quality, provenance, metadata, bias, and what an analysis can support. Product analytics, automation, model-enabled features, and evidence-based decisions. Methods endure; data sources, regulations, and tooling evolve.
Platform and operational foundations Work with cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, data management, DevOps practices, and APIs. Teams that deploy, secure, scale, or integrate modern services. Medium to fast-changing; underlying reliability and security principles persist.
Applied AI engineering Design applications around foundation models, curate data, evaluate outputs, and plan deployment. Engineers building AI-enabled products; not mandatory for every engineer. Very fast-changing; evaluation and operational discipline are durable anchors.
Human and organizational skills Explain trade-offs, collaborate across functions, communicate limitations, adapt, and accept accountability. Every role, especially when AI changes ownership boundaries. Stable capabilities with changing team contexts.

A 2025 qualitative study of 21 developers working at the cutting edge of AI use grouped core software engineering among four domains for AI-enhanced work. Its small sample is not a workforce-wide prevalence estimate, but it reinforces the distinction between learning a tool and developing judgment that transfers across tools.

1. Reinforce core software engineering

Requirements and system design

Practice turning an ambiguous request into acceptance criteria, constraints, interfaces, data flows, and explicit non-goals. AI can suggest an implementation, but it cannot reliably decide which business rule is missing or which operational constraint matters most. Learn to compare architectural options for latency, cost, availability, privacy, and ease of change.

Code comprehension and maintenance

Read an unfamiliar module without accepting its comments as proof of behavior. Trace inputs to outputs, identify side effects, locate error handling, and understand dependency boundaries. Generated code becomes a liability when nobody can explain why it works or how a future change could break it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing and debugging

Use unit, integration, contract, property-based, and end-to-end tests where they fit the risk. Build a minimal reproducible case for a defect, inspect logs and traces, and distinguish a symptom from a root cause. Ask an assistant for test ideas, but judge whether the tests exercise meaningful failure modes rather than merely repeating the implementation.

Maintainability and operational ownership

Learn version control discipline, code review, dependency management, observability, rollback, incident response, and technical-debt triage. The person who approves a change remains responsible for its production consequences, even when a model drafted most of the diff.

2. Make AI-assisted development an engineering practice

Choose tasks deliberately

Start with bounded, reversible work: boilerplate, test scaffolding, API examples, migration drafts, or explanations of a known codebase. Avoid treating an assistant as an authority for security-sensitive logic, authorization rules, irreversible data migrations, or unfamiliar regulatory requirements until a qualified engineer can verify every assumption.

Evaluate the tool in your workflow

  1. Define the task and acceptance test. State inputs, outputs, constraints, performance expectations, and prohibited behavior before asking for code.
  2. Check data handling. Confirm what source code, logs, prompts, or customer data may be sent to the service under your organization’s policy.
  3. Request a small change. Keep the diff reviewable and preserve a working baseline so you can revert quickly.
  4. Inspect the output. Read every changed line, dependency, configuration value, and generated test. Look for insecure defaults, hidden network calls, license concerns, and assumptions about versions or environments.
  5. Run automated and human checks. Execute the relevant test suite, static analysis, dependency and secret scans, and a manual review against the acceptance criteria.
  6. Measure the result. Record whether the tool reduced cycle time, introduced rework, or failed on this class of task. Re-evaluate as models, plans, and codebases change.

Benefits are neither automatic nor uniform. A tool that is useful for repetitive tests may be poor at a cross-service refactor. Keep a team-level record of successful and failed task types instead of assuming a general productivity gain.

Review generated code for four risks

  • Correctness: Does the implementation satisfy the requirement, including boundary and failure cases?
  • Security: Can an attacker bypass authorization, inject input, expose secrets, or exploit an unsafe dependency?
  • Quality: Is the code readable, testable, observable, and consistent with project conventions?
  • Maintainability: Will another engineer understand the design, update dependencies, and change behavior without fragile workarounds?

Human quality assurance and verification remain core responsibilities as code generation and translation become more common. AI-generated tests are evidence to examine, not evidence that examination is unnecessary.

3. Build data literacy

The OECD identifies data analysis and interpretation as increasingly important in workplaces using generative AI. For an engineer, that means more than learning a dashboard library. Learn to ask where data came from, how it was collected, what metadata describes it, which records are missing or duplicated, and whether a conclusion is causal, correlational, or simply descriptive.

Capabilities to practice

  • Profile datasets for completeness, consistency, outliers, and changing schemas.
  • Track provenance and transformation steps so a result can be reproduced.
  • Choose an evaluation set that represents real users and important edge cases.
  • Interpret uncertainty, confidence intervals, error rates, and trade-offs rather than reporting one attractive metric.
  • Explain what the data cannot establish, especially when a model output appears plausible.

Skills England includes data and metadata literacy, applied analytics, and data interpretation among relevant technical skills. These capabilities help whether you are building an AI feature, monitoring a conventional service, or deciding if an automated recommendation is safe to ship.

4. Add one platform foundation

Do not try to master every adjacent discipline at once. Choose the foundation that matches your current work and target role.

Cloud and platform engineering

Learn identity and access management, networking basics, containers, infrastructure as code, cost controls, reliability targets, and deployment patterns. AI features can increase compute, storage, and observability demands; platform knowledge lets you reason about those consequences instead of treating infrastructure as a black box.

Cybersecurity

Study secure design, threat modeling, authentication and authorization, secrets handling, dependency risk, software supply-chain controls, and incident response. For model-enabled systems, include prompt injection, data leakage, unsafe tool use, and abuse monitoring in the threat model.

Data engineering

Understand schemas, pipelines, batch and streaming trade-offs, data contracts, lineage, retention, and access controls. Reliable data operations are prerequisites for reliable analytics and model evaluation.

DevOps and API orchestration

Practice continuous integration and delivery, automated testing gates, observability, release strategies, and resilient service integration. Skills England lists API orchestration among technical skills affected by changing technology work. The source material does not establish a universal order among cloud, security, data, and DevOps; your system’s failure modes should determine the first choice.

Liz Bryson, Head of the Digital Learning Institute at Sanofi, made the foundation case on Coursera’s Job Skills Report 2026 page: “While AI-specific skills are important, it’s equally important to take a step back and make sure that our technical teams have solid foundations in domains like cloud engineering, cybersecurity, data management, and dev ops. These are the core skills that we need for AI transformation.” The report analyzed more than 6 million enterprise learners, so its data describes platform learners, not all workers or vacancies.

5. Specialize in applied AI engineering when your role requires it

Building an AI-enabled product is a specialization, not a compulsory destination. Gartner’s public summary names AI-native engineering, data curation, adaptive dynamics, and LLM-system evaluation as relevant areas. Focus on application-level engineering rather than assuming that every software engineer must train foundation models.

Application design around models

Learn how to select a model for capability, latency, cost, context limits, and data-handling requirements. Design explicit interfaces around model calls, validate outputs, handle timeouts and partial failures, and provide safe fallbacks when the model is unavailable or uncertain.

Data curation and retrieval

Practice collecting lawful, relevant data; documenting provenance; removing or labeling low-quality examples; and designing retrieval pipelines whose chunks, metadata, and permissions are testable. Retrieval-augmented generation and agent patterns are implementation choices, not guarantees of accuracy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LLM-system evaluation

Create representative test cases, adversarial cases, and human-review rubrics. Measure factuality, task success, refusal behavior, latency, cost, and harmful or privacy-sensitive failure modes. Re-run evaluations after model, prompt, retrieval, or tool changes so improvements in one metric do not conceal regressions in another.

Deployment and operations

Plan versioning, monitoring, rate limits, feedback loops, rollback, and ownership. A model response is one component in a system; the surrounding permissions, data stores, APIs, and user interface determine much of the real-world risk.

For a structured reference, AI Engineering: Building Applications with Foundation Models by Chip Huyen (O’Reilly Media, December 2024, 534 pages, intermediate to advanced, ISBN 9781098166298) covers application development, evaluation, adaptation techniques such as retrieval-augmented generation and agents, and deployment. It is an optional resource for this path, not a required purchase.

6. Strengthen communication, collaboration, and accountability

AI changes who can produce a first draft, which makes explanation and coordination more valuable. Practice writing clear design notes, stating uncertainty, negotiating trade-offs with product and operations teams, and documenting why a generated change was accepted. Learn to present model limitations to nontechnical colleagues without hiding behind jargon.

The OECD discusses problem-solving, creativity, and innovation as important capabilities, while Skills England highlights communication, collaboration, accountability, and adaptability. These are not “soft” substitutes for technical skill: they are how teams make decisions, assign ownership, and recover when automation behaves unexpectedly.

A role-based learning sequence

Use the following sequence as a decision framework rather than a universal ranking.

  1. Identify your destination. Write down your current role, strongest and weakest engineering practices, the systems you want to work on, and whether your target job builds AI products or merely uses AI-enabled tools.
  2. Close a core-practice gap. Choose one concrete weakness—testing, debugging, design, security review, or operations—and deliver a small project that demonstrates improvement.
  3. Use AI on bounded tasks. Keep a baseline, review the diff, run checks, and record where the tool helped or created rework.
  4. Add one adjacent foundation. Pick cloud/platform, cybersecurity, data engineering and interpretation, or DevOps according to the risks and responsibilities of your target work.
  5. Choose the AI specialization only if needed. For AI product roles, add data curation, model selection, evaluation, retrieval or tool integration, and deployment operations.
  6. Demonstrate ownership. Publish a design note, test strategy, threat model, evaluation report, or incident exercise that explains trade-offs and limitations—not just a prompt transcript.
  7. Revisit the plan. Tool interfaces and model capabilities change quickly. Keep the durable foundations and reassess the volatile techniques against your actual workflow.

How to interpret the employment outlook

Employment numbers should inform planning, not promise a result. Skills England’s 2026 analysis estimates that the UK digital and technology sector will need 69,000 additional workers in programmer and software development professional occupations between 2025 and 2035. The report says evidence about AI’s effect on employment levels is currently weak and that its projections are indicative.

The same analysis projects 239,000 jobs of growth—27%—across 30 priority digital and technology occupations between 2025 and 2035, plus an estimated 249,000 replacement workers, for total demand of about 488,000. Those figures cover the wider UK sector and should not be presented as a forecast for software engineers alone. Geography, occupation definitions, economic conditions, and AI adoption can all change the outcome.

Training access is also uneven. An OECD report says more than half of workers using AI report receiving employer-funded training, citing a 2023 survey by Lane, Williams and Broecke. That finding describes reported training among AI users; it does not guarantee that every engineer’s employer will fund the skills they need. Build a portfolio of verifiable work and seek feedback from experienced reviewers rather than relying on a credential’s title.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Betting everything on prompt engineering. Prompt techniques change with models and do not replace system design, testing, security, or domain knowledge.
  • Accepting generated code because it compiles. Compilation says little about authorization, data leakage, race conditions, observability, or long-term maintainability.
  • Chasing every new framework. Learn the underlying evaluation, deployment, and reliability concepts before adding another rapidly changing abstraction.
  • Assuming everyone must become an ML engineer. Applied AI is a valid path for product builders, while platform, security, data, and conventional application roles remain essential.
  • Using workforce projections as guarantees. The available estimates are geographically scoped and explicitly uncertain.
  • Confusing a certificate with competence. A credential can organize study, but it cannot demonstrate that you can own a production outcome.

The practical standard to aim for

An AI-ready software engineer can explain a requirement, choose an appropriate implementation approach, use an assistant where it genuinely helps, inspect and test the result, identify security and maintenance risks, operate the service, and communicate limitations clearly. Engineers building AI products add disciplined data curation and system-level evaluation. Engineers in other roles can remain focused on their domain while understanding enough about AI-enabled components to govern them responsibly.
