Entry-level studios usually look for three things: a credible foundation in the specific discipline you want, finished work that proves you can apply it, and evidence that you can communicate, accept feedback and learn on a team. The exact bar changes by role, project, studio and location, so a focused portfolio is more useful than a generic list of software.
What entry-level studios are really evaluating
Hiring managers are not assessing a single “game developer” skill set. A junior programmer, designer, quality-assurance tester, artist and audio candidate may work on the same project but need to demonstrate different capabilities. Across those disciplines, however, four themes recur.

Applied ability, not only coursework
The International Game Developers Association’s Hireability Gaps report (2023) describes interviews with 21 hiring personnel or recruiters representing 20 gaming companies, with experience spanning more than 42 companies. In that qualitative sample, recruiters valued hands-on experience and a solid portfolio. One interviewed recruiter said, “a lot of my strategy is to do a lot more hiring based on aptitude versus skill.” Another report participant said, “Nearly all the companies interviewed wanted recent graduates with hands-on experience and a solid portfolio to apply.”
Those statements are useful signals rather than an industry-wide formula: the sample is limited, and its hiring discussion reflects the period covered by the 2023 report rather than a measurement of the 2026 market. A class project, game jam, internship, mod, prototype, test plan or personal tool can all be useful evidence when you explain exactly what you did.

Depth in one initial discipline
Studios generally need to know where you can contribute on day one. “I like games” is motivation, not a job qualification. Choose a target such as gameplay programming, systems design, environment art, technical art, sound or QA, then build enough foundation to complete small tasks without constant supervision. You can broaden later; your first application should make one capability easy to recognize.
Team behavior and learning
Game production is cross-disciplinary. Recruiters and role descriptions repeatedly emphasize communication, collaboration, response to feedback and willingness to learn. The IGDA report says companies wanted candidates and employees to demonstrate a “growth mindset” and identify as “life-long learners.” That does not mean claiming to know everything. It means showing how you received criticism, investigated a problem, changed an implementation and documented what you learned.
Evidence that is easy to verify
A reviewer may spend only a short time on an application. A playable build, concise video, code repository, art breakdown, bug report or design document gives the reviewer something concrete to inspect. Label your contribution on team work, identify the tools and version used, and state what changed between the first and final iteration.

Junior programming
Entry-level programming work can include gameplay, tools, server or web-service code, and maintenance of an existing codebase. You should be ready to read unfamiliar code, isolate a defect, make a small change, test it and explain the result. Basic data structures, control flow, object-oriented concepts, version control and debugging habits matter more than a long list of frameworks.
The Entry-Level Skills Hub lists C, C++ or C#, GDScript, Unreal Engine, Unity and Git as common or useful examples. They are not a requirement to master every engine. Learn one environment deeply enough to ship a small project, then be able to describe how you would transfer those concepts to another tool. SEGA’s programming descriptions also mention C++, C#, Java, Python and SQL, depending on the work, and include game applications, services, tools and libraries. That is SEGA’s description, not a universal junior checklist.

Prepare for a coding exercise by practicing small, testable functions and by narrating your debugging process. A portfolio page should identify the feature you owned, the constraint you faced and the trade-off you made, rather than displaying only a download link.
Junior game design
Design candidates need to show that they can turn an intention into rules a player can understand and enjoy. Relevant foundations include mechanics, systems, pacing, player behavior, balancing and clear design documentation. Basic scripting or engine familiarity helps you prototype instead of presenting ideas that nobody can play.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePlaytest evidence is especially valuable. Explain the question you tested, what players did, which feedback patterns appeared and what you changed. SEGA’s designer description stresses communicating a concept, listening to team feedback, coordinating toward delivery and continuing to learn. A short prototype accompanied by a one-page decision log can demonstrate those behaviors more efficiently than a large catalogue of unfinished ideas.
Quality assurance
QA is not simply “playing games.” Entry-level testers must follow a test case, vary conditions, notice unexpected behavior, reproduce it and write a report another person can act on. Reports should state the build, steps, expected result, actual result, frequency and severity when those fields are requested.
The role profile names TestRail, Confluence and Microsoft Office, with Jira and other tools as useful familiarity. Tool names are secondary to disciplined investigation and writing. You can demonstrate readiness with a small test plan for a publicly available game or your own prototype, plus two or three bug reports that include clear reproduction steps. Do not present that exercise as professional experience.

Art and sound
Entry expectations vary widely. SEGA describes artist work across characters, backgrounds, motion, effects, interface and technical art, and says starting artists may develop through training rather than arriving with highly specialized computer-graphics skills. Its sound description likewise says applicants are not expected to possess every skill across the complete audio-production workflow and emphasizes teamwork.

How to build convincing evidence before applying
1. Select a role and a target studio type
Start with the discipline and level you want, then read several current listings for that kind of job. Note recurring tasks, required tools, location, eligibility and the requested application materials. The IGDA career guidance advises identifying an area of interest, researching its required skills and taking opportunities to work on games, including making them.
2. Finish one appropriately sized project
A complete, modest project is more persuasive than an ambitious project that never runs. Define a deliverable that fits your time: one playable level, one mechanic, one short scene, one test suite or one audio implementation. Keep the final build accessible, state the platform and controls, and provide a short video if installation is difficult.
3. Record your contribution and decisions
For team work, list your responsibilities separately from the group’s outcome. Explain a technical or creative constraint, the options you considered, the choice you made and the result. Include links to relevant code, design pages, art layers or test documentation when you have permission to share them.

4. Show iteration and feedback
Include a before-and-after example or a brief change log. Describe who tested or reviewed the work, what signal you received and how you responded. This turns “I work well with others” into observable behavior without overstating your experience.
5. Practice the evidence the role will request
Programmers may receive coding assignments; designers may be asked to discuss a concept or critique a game; QA applicants may complete a test exercise; artists and sound candidates may submit a reel or portfolio review. Rehearse explaining your choices aloud and be ready to discuss unfinished work honestly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a game-specific degree?
No single degree is required across entry-level studios. In the IGDA interview sample, participants often emphasized capability and work samples over a particular qualification. The Higher Education Video Game Alliance reported that more than 520 U.S. institutions offered over 1,200 game-related programs and degrees in 2019, but that statistic describes educational availability, not hiring outcomes.
SEGA’s graduate page says applicants from all fields and specializations are eligible for its listed recruitment route. That is a company-specific policy and should not be generalized to every employer or role. A computer-science degree can support programming fundamentals; an art, design, audio or QA portfolio can demonstrate other routes. Employers may still set role-specific education, visa, location or graduation-window requirements, so read the current listing rather than relying on a general assumption.
Experience routes when you have not held a studio job
Internships are one option, but they are not the only way to produce credible evidence. Self-directed projects, game jams, student teams, mods, open-source tools, volunteer testing and mentorship can provide practice. Access is uneven, so do not treat participation in a prestigious program as a prerequisite.
Best Value
Ubisoft describes a mentorship program for some students and recent graduates, while explicitly stating that it is not tied to hiring. It illustrates how a studio may offer development support without creating a recruitment guarantee. Check the location, intake dates and eligibility for any program, and keep building independent work that you can show regardless of the outcome.
How to compare roles and studios
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Discipline-specific craft | What tasks and foundational skills are named for this role: code, design, art, audio, QA or another specialty? |
| Proof expected | Does the employer request a portfolio, code sample, game proposal, test report, reel, interview exercise or another artifact? |
| Degree and experience | Is a qualification required, are varied backgrounds accepted, and does the listing prioritize applied work? |
| Team practices | How much written communication, cross-discipline coordination, feedback and iterative problem-solving does the work require? |
| Local context | Which location, project, hiring intake and employment conditions affect eligibility and expectations? |
This comparison prevents a common error: copying one studio’s requirements into every application. A tool named in one listing may be optional elsewhere; a graduate route open to all fields at one company may coexist with a degree requirement for a different team.
Common weak signals and how to fix them
- Generic enthusiasm: Replace statements about loving games with a shipped artifact and a description of your contribution.
- Unfocused tool lists: Identify one tool you used to complete a result, and explain the transferable concept behind it.
- Unfinished portfolios: Archive or label incomplete experiments and feature a small set of finished, relevant work first.
- Team credit without individual detail: State your exact tasks, decisions and hand-offs.
- Defensive responses to critique: Describe the feedback, the change you made and what you would test next.
- Overclaiming professional experience: Clearly label coursework, jams, personal projects and simulated test exercises.
- Ignoring production realities: Demonstrate version control, naming conventions, reproducible steps, documentation or performance awareness where relevant to the role.
What a strong graduate application lets a reviewer answer
After viewing your materials, a reviewer should be able to answer five practical questions: What role is this person pursuing? What did they personally make? Which fundamentals did they use? How did they respond when the first version failed or received criticism? Can they explain the work clearly enough to collaborate with other disciplines?
If your portfolio makes those answers obvious, you are addressing the qualities described in the IGDA’s 2023 report and the cited role descriptions without pretending that every studio uses the same formula. Keep checking each employer’s current process because roles, locations, projects and graduate intakes change.
