The strongest broad signals are AI literacy, digital and data literacy, and the ability to combine technical capability with human strengths such as communication, judgment and collaboration. The skills that actually lead to interviews in your area depend on its industry mix, occupations, employers and current hiring cycle. Because no city or region was specified here, a defensible local ranking is not possible; use the framework below to identify the capabilities employers are requesting where you live.
What employers are signaling across the economy
Employers are adapting jobs rather than simply replacing one occupation with another. Software, automation and data tools are entering technical and nontechnical functions, so many vacancies now assume a basic ability to work with digital systems. At the same time, organizations still need people who can explain decisions, understand customers, solve ambiguous problems and work responsibly with colleagues.

AI literacy is becoming a hiring signal
LinkedIn’s Building a Future of Work That Works report says U.S. jobs requiring AI-literacy skills, including prompt engineering, grew 70% year over year in its 2026 Labor Market Report. That figure is specific to the United States and the report’s comparison period; it is not a forecast for every country or town. AI literacy can mean understanding how to select and use an AI tool, write and refine instructions, check outputs, protect confidential information and recognize when a human decision is required. It does not necessarily mean becoming a machine-learning engineer.

The same report says 1.3 million new AI-enabled jobs emerged globally over the previous two years. It also notes that adoption remains slow and that skills are concentrated in a few functions. Treat those figures as indicators of direction, not proof that every local employer is hiring for AI roles. In a smaller economy, the practical request may appear in a customer-service, operations, marketing, finance or administrative posting rather than under an “AI” job title.

Digital and data literacy are baseline capabilities
Digital literacy covers the routine ability to use workplace software, manage files and permissions, communicate through collaboration platforms, follow security practices and learn a new system. Data literacy adds the ability to read a chart, check whether a number makes sense, define a useful measure and explain a result to someone who does not work with data every day. LinkedIn describes both as becoming baseline capabilities in technical and nontechnical functions.
For a local job seeker, baseline does not mean every vacancy will list the phrase “data literacy.” Look for the underlying tasks: updating a customer-record system, reconciling a spreadsheet, monitoring a dashboard, documenting a process or making a recommendation from evidence. A short work sample that demonstrates one of those tasks can be more persuasive than a long list of software names.
Human capabilities remain complementary
LinkedIn’s 2026 report interprets opportunity as flowing toward workers who combine AI expertise with people skills. That is an interpretation of LinkedIn’s labor-market indicators, not a rule that applies identically to all employers. In practice, people skills include clear writing, listening, negotiation, teaching, conflict management, reliability and the judgment to escalate a risk. Technical knowledge may get a candidate into a shortlist; the ability to apply it safely with customers and colleagues often determines whether the candidate succeeds.

Why the most valuable skills differ from place to place
Local economies have different concentrations of employers, credentials and supply chains. A region with hospitals and medical-device manufacturers may emphasize regulated documentation, quality systems and clinical data. A logistics center may prioritize inventory software, scheduling, safety and process improvement. A tourism economy may value multilingual service, revenue management and rapid problem solving. A public-sector hub may emphasize procurement, accessibility, records management and policy analysis.
Even within one industry, occupations change at different speeds. An expanding occupation may add new tools while an older role is redesigned around fewer, more complex tasks. A job title can hide adjacent capabilities: a “coordinator” might need spreadsheet analysis and vendor negotiation, while a “technician” might need customer education and digital reporting. For that reason, a national list should be treated as a starting hypothesis, not a local answer.
How to identify the skills employers need in your area
Use a defined geography and a stated time window. “My area” could mean a city, commuting zone, county or an entire country; mixing those boundaries can produce a misleading list. A practical scan can be completed in five steps.

- Define the labor market. Name the city or region, the occupations you could realistically enter and a period such as the most recent 60 or 90 days. Keep remote postings separate from jobs that require local presence.
- Collect a meaningful sample of postings. Gather postings from several employers and industries rather than copying one company’s repeated template. Record the title, required and preferred skills, credential requirements, experience level, work arrangement and posting date.
- Normalize different wording. Group “customer relationship management,” “CRM” and a named CRM platform under the same capability, while keeping a specific license or regulated credential separate. Distinguish a tool that appears once from a capability that recurs across occupations.
- Check the occupation and industry context. Ask whether a requested skill is shared across several job titles or is limited to one narrow function. Shared capabilities have greater transfer value, but a specialized license may still be essential for a particular occupation.
- Validate with hiring and worker evidence. Compare posting frequency with local hiring changes, training-provider curricula and the skills shown by people already doing the work. Keep each evidence type labeled; a posting requirement is not the same as an actual hire or a measured employment outcome.
The resulting list should show frequency, not just popularity. For example, “Excel” appearing in 18 of 40 postings is a stronger local signal than a fashionable tool appearing in two. Also record whether the skill is required on day one or can be learned after hiring.

Use these questions to decide whether a capability deserves priority. They prevent a single viral trend or one unusually detailed job advertisement from dominating your conclusions.
| Axis | Question to ask | What a strong signal looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Industry and occupation | Which sectors are hiring, and which occupations are expanding or being redesigned? | The capability appears in multiple current postings within an expanding local sector. |
| Specificity | Is the skill broadly useful or tied to one narrow occupation? | A broad capability recurs across titles; a specialized one is paired with its license or technical standard. |
| Transferability | Can someone from an adjacent role demonstrate it? | The same underlying task appears under different titles, such as reporting, scheduling or stakeholder communication. |
| Time and geography | Are the comparison period and boundary consistent? | All postings and hiring measures cover the same local area and stated months. |
| Evidence type | What exactly is being measured? | Posting requirements, hiring-rate changes, worker-profile skills and employment outcomes are reported separately. |
What national and metro data can—and cannot—tell you
LinkedIn’s January 2026 Workforce Report illustrates why geography matters. Among the 20 U.S. metropolitan areas it tracks, hiring rose 11.1% month over month in Atlanta and 10.0% in San Francisco from November to December 2025. Year-over-year hiring was strongest in Miami–Fort Lauderdale (+6.9%), Detroit (+5.6%) and Minneapolis–St. Paul (+5.4%). These are changes in hiring rates for a defined period, not rankings of the skills employers requested. A metro with faster hiring is not automatically a metro with greater demand for AI, data or any other capability.
LinkedIn’s figures come from indicators built from its member and job activity, so they do not constitute a complete census of every local employer or worker. Use them to establish that local markets can move differently, then consult local postings and occupational information before choosing what to learn.
Why skills-based hiring changes the opportunity set
Traditional screening often relies on job titles, degrees and a narrow list of previous employers. Skills-based hiring instead searches for demonstrated capabilities, while retaining any valid licensing, credential or safety requirement. Someone who has performed the underlying work under a different title can therefore become visible to the employer.

In the United States, the modeled increase was 15.9-fold. These are comparisons of eligible talent pools at an early stage, not six or 15 times more hires, better performance or guaranteed interviews. The report says results vary substantially by country and industry, and its expanded scope should not be compared directly with its 2023 estimates.

“For employers, using skill filters in recruiting searches can lead to more targeted hiring and uncovering hidden talent, particularly in roles with small or specialized talent pools.”
— LinkedIn Economic Graph and OECD Centre for Skills, The Skills Signal: Unlocking Opportunity in a Changing Labor Market (2025)
For workers, the practical lesson is to describe accomplishments in capability terms. Instead of listing only “office assistant,” explain that you maintained accurate records, built a weekly report, coordinated vendors and resolved customer issues. For employers, review whether an unnecessary title or degree filter is excluding people who can perform the work.
Which skills should an individual learn first?
Choose a sequence based on local evidence and your target occupation rather than collecting certificates indiscriminately.
1. Build the digital foundation
Become fluent in the collaboration, document, spreadsheet and record systems common in your target postings. Learn naming conventions, version control, access permissions and basic security. Demonstrate the result with a clean, reproducible work sample.
2. Add practical data skills
Practice cleaning a small dataset, calculating a few meaningful measures, creating a readable chart and writing a short explanation of what the numbers do and do not show. For many roles, the ability to spot an error and communicate uncertainty is more valuable than an advanced statistical method.

3. Learn AI use with verification
Use an approved tool to draft, summarize or classify low-risk material; then check accuracy, bias, confidentiality and copyright before relying on the output. Keep a record of the prompt, source material and corrections in a portfolio. Never upload a customer’s personal data, proprietary code or regulated information to an unapproved service.
4. Strengthen one role-specific capability
Select the technical skill that recurs most often in the local postings you collected: a trade standard, scheduling system, quality method, language, accounting process or industry credential. If a license is legally required, it outranks a general digital course.
5. Make the human value visible
Prepare examples that show how you explained a complex issue, handled disagreement, trained a colleague, protected a customer or improved a process. Use a situation, action and measurable result; “good communicator” alone is not evidence.

- Write the work, not a wish list. Separate essential outcomes from tools that can be learned after hiring.
- Search adjacent titles. Look for demonstrated skills in neighboring occupations and validate them with a practical assessment.
- Keep lawful requirements. Do not remove licenses, certifications or safety competencies that the work genuinely requires.
- Show the learning path. State which systems, processes and AI safeguards a new hire will be taught.
- Audit outcomes. Compare who applies, who reaches an interview and who succeeds; revise filters that exclude capable local workers without improving performance.
Skills-based recruiting is a method for widening a qualified pool, not a promise that every candidate can do every job. Structured work samples and consistent scoring are needed to test the capability the posting describes.
Common mistakes when reading skills trends
Confusing hiring growth with skill demand
A rise in a metro’s hiring rate says that more hiring occurred relative to the comparison period. It does not identify which skills caused the change. Pair hiring data with occupation-level postings.

Network-derived indicators can miss small employers, offline recruitment, informal work and people who do not maintain an online profile. Use them as one signal alongside local government, employer and training data.
Best Value
Chasing a tool instead of a capability
Software versions change. A durable skill is the outcome behind the tool: accurate forecasting, safe document handling, persuasive analysis or faster service. Learn the transferable principle, then the platform used locally.
Assuming AI literacy replaces expertise
AI can accelerate a task while increasing the cost of an unchecked error. Domain knowledge, privacy judgment and accountability remain necessary, especially in regulated or customer-facing work.
Counting certificates as proof
A certificate may show study, but employers still need evidence that you can perform the task. Pair learning with a portfolio item, supervised project, apprenticeship or quantified result.
A repeatable 30-day plan for finding your local priority
- Days 1–3: Choose one occupation and a commuting area. Save 30–50 recent postings and mark required versus preferred capabilities.
- Days 4–10: Group equivalent terms, count recurrence and note credentials that cannot be substituted.
- Days 11–17: Interview or observe two people in the occupation, asking which tasks consume time and which skills new hires lack.
- Days 18–24: Build one work sample combining a digital tool, a simple data decision and a clear explanation for a non-specialist.
- Days 25–30: Ask a local employer, instructor or professional association to score the sample against real tasks. Revise your learning plan and résumé using the language that accurately describes your demonstrated abilities.
Repeat the scan every few months because local hiring, technology and employer priorities change. Keep the date on every conclusion so a temporary surge is not mistaken for a permanent requirement.
The practical answer
Start with digital and data fluency, add safe and verifiable AI use, and pair those capabilities with communication, judgment and collaboration. Then let your local evidence decide which industry-specific skill comes next. The available national and metro indicators show a changing market and meaningful geographic variation, but they cannot name the top skills for an unspecified location. A local posting sample, consistent occupation boundaries and clear evidence of what you can do will produce a more reliable answer than any universal ranking.
