They need practical AI literacy: knowing what an approved system can and cannot do, using it within policy, checking its output against reliable information, protecting customer data, explaining AI-assisted work, and remaining accountable for decisions. Staff who build models, manage data or set controls need deeper technical and governance skills.
The right capability therefore depends on role, decision authority and risk. A customer-service employee using an approved assistant needs a different depth of expertise from a model validator, compliance officer or board member. The common standard is safe human judgment around machine assistance, not automation without oversight.

What “working alongside AI” means in banking
AI is already being used, or considered, across banking workflows including fraud detection, transaction monitoring, algorithmic trading, customer segmentation, regulatory compliance, credit-risk scoring and customer-service automation. The UK government’s sectoral overview of AI skills describes these as different applications with different levels of customer, market and regulatory risk.
Recommended Free Tools
Working alongside AI means combining a system’s speed or pattern recognition with a person’s context, judgment and accountability. An employee may ask a tool to summarize a case, review an alert, draft a response or identify anomalies. The employee still has to decide whether the result is accurate, suitable for the customer and permissible under the bank’s controls.

Skills England’s financial-services assessment puts the scale of the requirement plainly: “Although only 0.5%-1% of workers need specialist AI skills, most workers now need to be able to work alongside AI in their roles.” Skills England says this figure comes from workshops conducted for its sector assessment, so it should be treated as workshop evidence rather than a universal headcount forecast. Read the full financial-services sector skills assessment for the methodology and qualifications.
Adoption figures need their geography and date
AI use is not a single global statistic. A 2024 survey by the Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority covering 118 UK financial firms found that 75% were already using AI and another 10% planned to deploy it within three years. That is a dated UK financial-services survey, not a current estimate for every country or bank. The UK government’s Financial Services AI Adoption Plan repeats the 75% 2024 finding and says updated survey work was under way.
A separate DSIT AI Adoption Survey in early 2025 found AI adoption reported by 21% of firms in the financial and real-estate sectors, compared with 16% across the UK economy. Those sectors, samples and measures differ from the BoE/FCA survey, so the percentages must not be combined.
The core skills for every banking employee
1. AI and digital literacy
Employees should understand the purpose, broad capabilities and known limitations of each AI tool they use. That includes recognizing whether a system generates text, predicts risk, ranks alerts, extracts data or recommends an action. Literacy also means knowing the approved-use policy: which applications are sanctioned, what information may be entered, how outputs are retained, and which tasks are prohibited.
A short explanation of the model’s role should be enough for a user to answer practical questions such as: What input did it use? What kind of error is common? Is the result a suggestion, an alert or an automated action? Who owns the final decision? Training should answer those questions without requiring everyone to learn model mathematics.
2. Safe data handling
AI does not remove a bank’s obligations for confidentiality, privacy or information security. Staff need to classify customer and market data, avoid pasting restricted information into unapproved tools, and understand how prompts, uploaded files and chat histories are stored. They should know the route for reporting an accidental disclosure or suspected misuse.

Data awareness also covers provenance. An employee should be able to identify whether an answer came from an approved internal source, a current policy document or an unverified external corpus. If the source cannot be established, the output is a lead for checking, not evidence for a customer or regulatory decision.
3. Practical tool use and prompting
Where generative AI is approved, staff benefit from task-specific prompting rather than abstract demonstrations. A useful prompt states the task, audience, permitted sources, format, constraints and uncertainty to flag. For example, a service employee might ask for a plain-language summary of a policy passage, with the policy section cited and any unresolved ambiguity listed.
Skills England identifies prompt engineering and the use of generative and agentic applications as technical capabilities, while describing more advanced configuration as experimental. Most users need repeatable prompting patterns and tool fluency; a smaller group needs to configure workflows, connect systems or evaluate agents.
4. Data, numeracy and analytical interpretation
AI-supported banking work still depends on sound financial data and basic numeracy. Employees should understand the units, time periods, populations and definitions behind a result; spot impossible values or unusual distributions; and ask what data may be missing. A risk score, forecast or trend is not meaningful without its reference period and business context.
Users do not have to build every statistical model, but they should recognize when a conclusion exceeds the evidence. If an output changes sharply after a data refresh, uses an unexpected segment or conflicts with a known account fact, the discrepancy must be investigated rather than silently accepted.
5. Critical evaluation and professional judgment
AI can produce fluent but incomplete, outdated or incorrect answers. Employees need a deliberate verification habit: compare material facts with approved records, test calculations, check dates and definitions, and look for missing exceptions. The UK government’s evidence review on what works for AI upskilling recommends practicing critical evaluation and validation before information reaches a client.

Judgment includes knowing when not to proceed. A consequential customer, fraud, credit or compliance case should be routed to the designated reviewer when the output is uncertain, contradictory, outside the tool’s intended use or likely to affect a person unfairly.
6. Human-AI collaboration and communication
Banking teams need to combine technical and business knowledge. A user should be able to describe the task and desired outcome to a data specialist, while a technical colleague should explain limitations in language that operations, legal and risk teams can act on. Clear handoffs prevent a model result from becoming an unexplained number in a process.
Employees also need to explain AI-assisted work to customers, colleagues and auditors without overstating certainty. A concise account should identify what the system contributed, what a person checked, which source supported the conclusion and what remains uncertain.

Responsible use covers transparency, bias, privacy, security, regulatory standards, organizational ethics and accountability. Staff should recognize when a model could disadvantage a customer group, expose sensitive information, obscure a reason for an action or create a conflict with a retention or approval rule.
Governance is practical, not just a policy document. Employees need to know the owner of a system, the permitted purpose, performance-monitoring arrangements, escalation channel and record-keeping requirement. They should be comfortable stopping a workflow and seeking review when a control is unclear.
8. Adaptability and continuous learning
Tools, policies and workflows will change. Skills England reports growing demand for behavioral capabilities such as adaptability alongside technical skills. In practice, that means completing updates, learning revised interfaces, reporting new failure modes and refreshing role knowledge. Adaptability supplements, rather than replaces, formal controls and role-specific training.

How the capability changes by role
The same AI output can have very different consequences depending on who uses it. The following allocation keeps training proportional to authority and risk.
| Role group | Primary authority | Capabilities to emphasize | Human review expectation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frontline and customer-support staff | Use AI assistance in customer work | Approved-tool use, alert review, fact checking, data protection and clear customer communication | Route uncertain or consequential cases to the designated reviewer before communicating or acting |
| Operations, compliance and risk | Control, monitor and challenge workflows | Performance monitoring, limitation testing, exception analysis, documentation and communication with colleagues or regulators | Assess whether an output is suitable for its stated purpose and record the rationale for acceptance or escalation |
| Senior managers and boards | Set direction and remain accountable | Transparency, regulatory expectations, organizational and societal implications, resource decisions and alignment with long-term goals | Require clear ownership, reporting and evidence that deployment remains compliant and defensible |
| Data, model and technology specialists | Build, configure and evaluate systems | Data analysis, AI and machine learning, natural-language processing, model evaluation, tool configuration and technical documentation | Work with governance, operations and business teams so technical choices are understandable, testable and controllable |
These distinctions reflect the role expectations in the UK AI skills sectoral overview. They are not a claim that every institution uses identical job titles or approval lines.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A human-in-the-loop workflow employees can follow
A consistent sequence makes good judgment easier to audit and teach. Banks can adapt the names of systems and approval roles to their own controls.
- Define the task and authority. State what decision or deliverable is needed, its customer or regulatory impact, and whether you are authorized to use AI for it.
- Choose an approved system. Confirm the tool, model version or workflow is on the institution’s approved list. Do not substitute a consumer service because it is more convenient.
- Check the inputs. Remove unnecessary personal or confidential data, verify that records are current, and note the source and period of any data supplied.
- Give a bounded instruction. Specify the task, audience, permitted sources, output format and facts that must be flagged rather than guessed.
- Inspect the result. Look for fabricated citations, arithmetic errors, missing exceptions, biased language, unsupported certainty and answers outside the tool’s intended purpose.
- Validate material claims. Compare facts, calculations and customer details with approved systems, policies or authoritative records. Obtain a second review where the control requires it.
- Decide, explain or escalate. Use the result only within your authority, explain the human checks performed, and escalate uncertainty, conflicts or high-impact cases.
- Record the interaction. Retain the evidence required by policy: the relevant input or source, output, reviewer, decision, exceptions and escalation outcome.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office found that “Most regulators told GAO that AI outputs inform staff decisions but are not used as sole decision-making sources.” That statement describes the US regulators surveyed in its 2025 report, Artificial Intelligence: Use and Oversight in Financial Services; it is not a universal legal rule for banks everywhere.
How to build a banking AI-skills program
Start with a baseline for everyone
Give all employees a short, mandatory foundation covering approved tools, prohibited data, common failure modes, verification, escalation and record keeping. Use realistic banking examples rather than generic chatbot demonstrations. A baseline should be refreshed when policy, systems or regulatory expectations change.
Add applied modules by job family
Frontline modules can practice reviewing alerts, checking customer-facing drafts and protecting sensitive information. Operations, risk and compliance modules can use performance dashboards, exception cases and documentation exercises. Manager modules can focus on ownership, transparency, resource choices and challenge questions. Technical pathways can cover data quality, model evaluation, monitoring, security and explainability.
Best Value
Teach through supervised practice
Exercises should require learners to inspect an imperfect output, locate the authoritative source, correct the result and decide whether to escalate. Assess the process, not merely a quiz score: Can the employee identify an out-of-scope request? Can they show which facts were verified? Can they explain why a result was accepted or rejected?
Connect training to governance
Training works only when employees can find the policy, approved-tool register, system owner and escalation route. Assign accountable owners for each workflow, define who may approve customer-impacting use, and make audit evidence part of normal work rather than an afterthought.
Measure behavior and outcomes
Useful measures include completion by role, quality of verification records, escalation timeliness, recurring error types, data-handling incidents and findings from control testing. Adoption alone is not success: a bank should know whether staff are using AI within scope and catching errors before they reach customers.

The UK evidence review says financial-services training must address regulated advisory environments, client accountability and changing workflows while reinforcing auditability, defensibility, explainability and trust. The UK adoption plan likewise says that building a broad skills base will require “significant upskilling and reskilling” and a future talent pipeline through education and training partnerships.
Learn from, but do not copy, other jurisdictions
Singapore provides one current example. In a 2025 speech, the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Institute of Banking and Finance described work on GenAI proficiency courses and a pilot with nine financial institutions examining how AI could augment or transform eight existing job roles. The initiative, reported by the Bank for International Settlements, illustrates sector-level collaboration; it does not establish that the same course or requirement is available in another country.
What employers should not assume
- Everyone must code. Coding and model-building are specialist pathways. Most employees need safe use, interpretation and escalation skills.
- Everyone needs prompt-engineering certification. The sources do not establish a universal certificate or global training mandate for bank employees.
- A fluent answer is a verified answer. Human review remains necessary for material facts and consequential decisions.
- One curriculum fits every job. The depth of training should follow task risk, decision authority and the required reviewer.
- One country’s adoption rate describes banking worldwide. The 75% and 10% figures are from a 2024 UK survey; the 21% figure is from a different early-2025 UK sector survey.
The practical standard
A bank is ready for responsible AI use when employees can answer five questions before acting: Is this tool approved for this task? Are the inputs safe and appropriate? What could the output get wrong? What evidence did I check? Who is accountable if the result affects a customer or regulated decision?
For most staff, competence means disciplined collaboration with AI rather than engineering it. For control functions and leaders, it adds challenge, governance and transparent accountability. For technical specialists, it extends to building and evaluating systems that business users can understand and control.
