What Skills and Certifications Do Drone Traffic Controllers Need?

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

There is no single, universally recognized “drone traffic controller” licence in the FAA or EASA material currently available. The title usually describes work in the emerging unmanned traffic management (UTM) or European U-space ecosystem, where people and software coordinate flight information, authorizations, airspace constraints and other operational services. It is not automatically the same job as conventional air traffic control (ATC), and it is not what the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate qualifies you to do.

Your requirements therefore depend on the vacancy, country and type of responsibility. Conventional ATC has formal personal licensing and long training pipelines; UTM/U-space providers are certified as organizations and may hire people with aviation operations, communications, software, data or safety backgrounds. The most portable preparation combines airspace and regulatory literacy with disciplined coordination, clear communication and confidence using operational information systems.

First, identify which job “drone traffic controller” means

The phrase covers several different kinds of work. Before choosing a course or certificate, read the employer’s duties and determine whether the role is direct control of aircraft, coordination of drone operations, or technical support for a traffic-management service.

UTM operations and service coordination

The FAA describes UTM as a cooperative, community-based system in which drone operators and entities providing operational-support services coordinate, execute and manage operations under FAA rules. A UTM specialist may monitor flight intent, check constraints, pass notifications to stakeholders, manage reservations of airspace volumes, or operate software that exchanges information between operators, service suppliers and the FAA’s Flight Information Management System.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Those activities can require rapid prioritization and strict procedures, but they do not necessarily involve issuing voice instructions to pilots in the way a tower or en-route controller does. Some jobs will be closer to an operations desk, safety coordinator, dispatcher, systems analyst or incident manager than to a conventional controller position.

European U-space services

In Europe, U-space is designated airspace in which operators use services such as flight authorization and geo-awareness. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) describes certification for organizations seeking to become U-space service providers. That is an organizational approval assessing capability and service provision; it is not evidence of one personal “drone traffic controller” licence accepted across Europe.

Conventional air traffic control

A vacancy may use “drone” in its description while actually hiring a conventional controller who will handle both crewed and uncrewed traffic. In that case, the applicable national ATC licence, selection process, medical standards, simulation and on-the-job training apply. Do not substitute a UTM course or a remote-pilot certificate for an ATC licence when the employer is operating a regulated control unit.

Which credentials apply to which path?

Career path What the credential or approval covers Typical evidence of competence
FAA air traffic control specialist Conventional ATC services in the United States FAA selection, medical examination, security investigation, pre-employment testing, FAA Academy training, facility training and certification
EASA-member-state air traffic controller Conventional ATC services under the applicable European licensing framework Theoretical courses, practical exercises including simulation, and on-the-job training to acquire and maintain ATC skills
FAA Part 107 remote pilot Operating small unmanned aircraft under the FAA Small UAS Rule Remote Pilot Certificate after the required knowledge test or qualifying alternative route, plus recurrent online training every 24 calendar months
UTM or U-space operations employee Coordination, information exchange, authorization workflows or safety support for an employer’s service Employer-defined aviation, operations, communications, software, data or safety qualifications; no universal personal controller licence established
U-space service provider Organization-level provision of designated U-space services EASA or national authority certification of the organization’s capability and service provision

The table separates personal credentials from an organization’s authorization. A provider can hold the required certification while hiring staff under its own competency and supervision system.

Skills employers are likely to value

No regulator in the material available publishes a complete competency framework for a job formally titled “drone traffic controller.” The skills below are evidence-informed, transferable preparation inferred from adjacent FAA requirements and the operational functions described for UTM and U-space. Treat a vacancy and its national regulator as the final authority.

Clear, concise communication

Controllers and operations staff must turn complex situations into unambiguous messages, read back critical information and escalate concerns without delay. FAA Part 107 knowledge topics include radio communication procedures. Even when a UTM role is primarily digital, the same discipline applies to alerts, handoffs, incident tickets, telephone coordination and written records.

Coordination and crew resource management

Part 107 includes crew resource management (CRM), and FAA UTM demonstrations involve coordination and data exchange among operators, service suppliers and other stakeholders. CRM habits include stating an observation, confirming who owns the next action, challenging an unsafe assumption respectfully and documenting the decision. These practices reduce errors when several organizations share responsibility for one flight environment.

Situational awareness and procedural discipline

Learn to maintain a mental and displayed picture of aircraft, airspace restrictions, weather, infrastructure, ground activity and changing priorities. Conventional controller training emphasizes learning the airspace environment, working safely under pressure and retaining proficiency. Those are transferable habits, but they do not prove that a UTM employer’s tasks are identical to ATC.

Airspace, aviation rules and weather literacy

Part 107 study subjects include regulations, airspace classification, weather, aircraft loading and performance, emergencies, CRM and radio communications. A UTM employee may not fly the aircraft, yet must understand enough to recognize an authorization conflict, a weather-driven risk or an operation outside its approved conditions.

Operational information systems and shared data

FAA UTM work includes flight-intent exchange, activity notifications, UAS Volume Reservation sharing and software functions. Build comfort with structured data, status dashboards, geospatial displays, access controls, audit trails and incident workflows. The useful skill is not a particular product name; it is reliable interpretation and handling of time-sensitive operational data.

Safety, abnormal-event response and security awareness

Practice following an emergency procedure rather than improvising around it. Understand how to preserve a timeline, notify the right stakeholder and prevent one bad data item from propagating through a shared system. The FAA’s UTM Field Test, conducted in 2023, examined remote-identification data correlation and cybersecurity alongside proposed standards for visual-line-of-sight (VLOS) and beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) operations. That combination shows why data integrity and security belong beside aviation knowledge.

Conventional ATC route: what the formal requirements look like

United States FAA entry-level controller

For FAA entry-level air traffic control specialist positions, the published requirements include:

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Being under 31 at the time specified by the hiring announcement.
  • A medical examination and a security investigation.
  • Pre-employment testing and clear spoken English.
  • One year of progressively responsible work experience, a bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of post-secondary education and work experience.

Selected candidates complete FAA Academy training. After the Academy, a new hire typically spends another two to three years in classroom and on-the-job training before becoming a certified professional controller. Continuing proficiency training remains part of the job. These conditions apply to FAA ATC hiring; they should not be presented as universal requirements for every UTM employer.

European ATC licensing

EASA’s licensing framework requires theoretical instruction, practical exercises including simulation, and on-the-job training to acquire and maintain the skills needed to deliver safe, orderly and expeditious ATC services. The exact licence, language, medical and age conditions are administered through the relevant national authority and the employing provider. This is a conventional ATC framework, not a general UTM credential.

FAA Part 107: useful aviation foundation, wrong job title

The FAA says that anyone who wants to fly a drone under the Small UAS Rule (Part 107) must obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate. A first-time applicant must be at least 16, satisfy the FAA’s language and physical or mental fitness conditions, and pass the Unmanned Aircraft General–Small (UAG) knowledge test. Certain pilots who hold qualifying Part 61 certificates have an alternate pathway.

Part 107 covers regulations, airspace, weather, loading and performance, emergencies, CRM and radio communications. Certificate holders must complete recurrent online training within the preceding 24 calendar months to continue operating under Part 107.

This certificate can strengthen an application by giving you first-hand knowledge of how operators plan and conduct flights. It does not authorize you to approve other operators’ flights, allocate shared airspace or perform ATC. Describe it accurately on a résumé as remote-pilot qualification and aviation context, not as traffic-controller certification.

How to prepare for a UTM or U-space operations role

  1. Classify the vacancy. Mark each duty as direct ATC, flight authorization, monitoring, dispatch, safety, data operations, software support or customer coordination. Ask the employer which regulator and service approval govern the position.
  2. Map the jurisdiction. For a U.S. job, determine whether the employer expects FAA ATC credentials, Part 107 knowledge, or neither. For a European job, identify the member-state authority and whether the employer is part of a certified U-space service provider.
  3. Build an aviation baseline. Study the applicable airspace structure, operating rules, weather, emergency procedures and communications. Part 107 is a possible foundation for small-UAS operations, but take it only when its knowledge matches the vacancy.
  4. Practice coordination under time pressure. Use scenario exercises that require prioritizing simultaneous requests, confirming handoffs, recording decisions and escalating an unsafe condition. Measure whether another person can reproduce your status picture from your notes.
  5. Develop data-system fluency. Learn to read geospatial layers, flight-intent records, alerts, reservations and audit logs. If the posting names a platform, focus on the underlying workflow and data quality principles rather than assuming a vendor certificate transfers to another system.
  6. Add safety and security evidence. Document experience with incident reporting, access control, cybersecurity awareness, privacy-sensitive data or quality management. UTM combines operational safety with reliable information exchange.
  7. Verify the employer’s gate conditions. Check age, citizenship, language, medical, background, shift and training requirements in the actual announcement. Ask whether the company supplies simulation and on-the-job qualification or expects prior controller experience.
  8. Keep the résumé precise. Separate personal licences, completed courses, software skills and supervised experience. State the aircraft type, airspace context and responsibility you actually held; do not imply that a remote-pilot certificate grants traffic-management authority.

Choosing between the two main career directions

Choose conventional ATC when

  • You want a regulated controller career with formal licensing, facility certification and a defined proficiency system.
  • You meet the relevant authority’s citizenship, age, medical, security, language and education or experience conditions.
  • You are prepared for Academy or theoretical training followed by simulation, classroom work and extended on-the-job training.

Choose UTM or U-space operations when

  • You prefer coordinating digital flight information, authorizations, reservations and stakeholder workflows.
  • Your strengths are operations management, aviation safety, communications, software, geospatial data or cybersecurity.
  • You are willing to follow an employer’s competency system while the regulatory framework and service models continue to develop.

Some people move between these directions, but one credential does not automatically transfer. A conventional controller licence demonstrates regulated ATC competence; Part 107 demonstrates small-drone operating knowledge; neither alone proves competence in a particular UTM platform or U-space service.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming the job title is standardized

Search the duty list, reporting line and regulator instead of relying on the title. “Controller” may mean a licensed ATC position, a network operations role or a software-supported coordination desk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying a course that promises a universal licence

Ask what authority issues the credential, which country recognizes it and which employer requirement it satisfies. Official FAA and EASA material does not establish one personal drone-traffic-controller certificate.

Confusing pilot authority with traffic authority

Part 107 allows eligible people to operate their own small UAS under the rule. It does not let the holder authorize another operator’s mission, manage shared reservations or replace an ATC licence.

Ignoring organizational certification

For U-space, the provider’s certification is central. An individual applicant should be ready to show how they will work within the provider’s procedures, supervision, technical controls and safety-management processes.

Overstating adjacent experience

Flight hours, radio use or a data-analysis course are useful evidence, but label them accurately. Explain the decision you made, the system you used and the limits of your authority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to verify before accepting an offer

  • Which authority regulates the service and which approval or licence the employer holds.
  • Whether the position is direct ATC, UTM service coordination, U-space service provision or technical operations.
  • Which personal certificates are mandatory at hiring and which can be earned after joining.
  • How simulation, supervised operations, recurrent training and proficiency checks are delivered.
  • What the role does during lost communications, conflicting flight intent, severe weather, unauthorized activity or a cybersecurity incident.
  • Whether shifts, medical standards, background checks, language requirements or geographic restrictions apply.

As of October 2026, the safest career advice is conditional: establish the jurisdiction and real duties first, then select credentials that directly match them. The field is developing through operational trials and service-provider frameworks rather than one globally standardized personal licence.
