Choose a USB drive based on the total size of your music files, then check that your stereo or player supports the drive’s capacity, file system, audio formats, and library size. As a quick reference, SanDisk estimates that a 32 GB drive holds about 2,000 four-minute MP3 songs encoded at 128 kbps; that is an example, not a universal song count.
What size USB stick do you need for music?
If you can access the music files, add up their sizes and choose a drive with enough usable capacity for the collection and any other files you plan to store. Leave some room rather than selecting a drive whose advertised capacity exactly matches the library total: usable space can be lower than the label suggests, and the file system also uses some space. There is no universal overhead percentage to apply.
If you need a rough song-count estimate, SanDisk’s published figures assume four-minute MP3 tracks encoded at 128 kbps, at approximately 3.5 MB per song. Its table gives these approximate estimates; actual amounts may vary by device.

These are SanDisk’s estimates for that stated MP3 basis, not guaranteed capacities for every library or player. The table’s lower-capacity figures do not double perfectly at each step, so use the published numbers as rough examples rather than recalculating them as exact ratios. SanDisk’s capacity guidance was published in 2022 and updated in 2026.

Why your song count may differ
- Encoding and format: Higher-bitrate MP3s and lossless files such as FLAC or WAV typically take more space than the example tracks.
- Track length: A six-minute file is larger than a four-minute file when other encoding settings are the same.
- Other files: Album art, playlists, and non-music files also consume space.
How many songs can a 32 GB USB drive hold?
SanDisk estimates about 2,000 four-minute, 128 kbps MP3 songs on a 32 GB drive. The estimate depends on that specific track-length and encoding basis; your actual count may be lower or higher depending on file sizes and the player. For a more reliable answer, total the music files’ sizes instead of estimating from the number of tracks.
Will your car stereo read a 64 GB flash drive?
Capacity alone does not establish compatibility. The answer depends on the exact stereo or player, including its supported USB connection modes, file systems, audio formats, and file or folder limits. Check the manual or product specifications for the model you plan to use before buying or formatting a drive.

Manufacturer specifications vary. For example, Sony documents a stereo example that supports FAT16 and FAT32, but not exFAT. By contrast, Ford owner information for a particular system lists FAT, exFAT, and NTFS. Neither example sets a rule for all car stereos, and neither establishes a universal maximum drive size.
Does a USB drive need to be FAT32 to play music?
Not necessarily. Use the file system specified for your exact player. FAT32 works with some devices, but support for exFAT, NTFS, or other file systems varies by model. Formatting a drive erases its contents, so back up your music first and confirm the required format before proceeding.

Check audio formats and USB connection modes
A player can recognize a drive but still fail to play particular files. Confirm both the supported file system and the audio formats or codecs listed for the device. For instance, Sony’s compatibility guidance names MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, and WAV, but tells users to consult model-specific specifications. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance likewise directs users to the product manual for supported file formats.
The USB device type can matter as well. Sony says compatible devices include Mass Storage Class (MSC) devices; support for Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) devices depends on the model and, in some cases, whether the device can switch to mass-storage mode. Supported formats also differ across product families. Ford’s cited owner information lists MP3, WMA, WAV, M4A, M4B, AAC, and FLAC for that system, alongside its specified file-system support. Do not assume that a format listed for one stereo will work on another.

Some players limit how many folders or files they can index. If a stereo stops showing tracks even though the drive has plenty of free space, its library limits may be the issue. Check the exact model’s manual for maximum folder counts, files per folder, or total file counts where those details are provided. Sony publishes finite file and folder limits for particular systems; those figures should not be applied to other models.

A practical way to choose and prepare a drive
- Measure the collection: Check the total size of the music files you intend to copy. If you cannot do that, use a manufacturer estimate only when your files resemble its stated assumptions.
- Check the player’s documentation: Find the supported USB capacity, file system, audio formats, connection modes, and any file or folder limits for your exact model.
- Select a suitable capacity: Choose a drive with enough room for the collection and a margin for other files and usable-capacity differences. Do not assume that a larger drive will be recognized just because it has more space.
- Format only if needed: Follow the device manual’s instructions for the file system. Back up files before formatting, since formatting erases existing contents.
- Test a small selection: Before copying a very large library, try a few tracks in the formats you use and confirm that the player recognizes the drive and plays them.
