Use a source image about 2500 pixels wide, keep the file below Squarespace’s 5MB product-image limit, and aim for 500KB or less when quality allows. Squarespace does not require one fixed dimension such as 750 × 500 pixels. It creates responsive versions for different screens, so the important decisions are source width, file weight, color space, aspect ratio, and how your template crops the image.
The short answer
- Master width: approximately 2500px for most product photos.
- Minimum practical width: avoid images below 1500px if they may be displayed large; they can look blurry on desktop screens.
- Maximum product-image file size: under 5MB per image.
- Performance target: 500KB or less where you can reach it without visible quality loss.
- Accepted formats: JPG, GIF, PNG and WebP. Animated WebP is not supported.
- Color profile: RGB or sRGB, not CMYK.
Squarespace automatically creates responsive widths of 100, 300, 500, 750, 1000, 1500 and 2500px and selects an appropriate version for the visitor’s screen. You therefore prepare a good-quality master rather than exporting a separate image for every device.
Why 2500px is the recommended working size
Squarespace’s current image guidance recommends about 2500px wide for most uploads. That gives the platform enough source detail to produce its largest responsive variant while still allowing smaller versions for phones and narrower columns. Uploading a much smaller source limits the detail available to every generated version.
There is no universal requirement for a particular height. A 2500 × 2500 square, a 2500 × 1667 landscape image and a 2500 × 3750 portrait image can all be valid, provided the composition suits the product container and the file remains below the limit.

Why images under 1500px can look soft
On a large monitor, a product gallery may render wider than a small source image. Squarespace cannot recreate detail that was never present, so an image under roughly 1500px wide may appear blurry or pixelated when enlarged. Re-exporting a soft original at 2500px only enlarges the blur; use a higher-resolution original instead.
Do not confuse the general upload limit with the product-page limit
Squarespace’s general image guidance lists a 20MB upload limit, but product pages have a stricter practical rule: keep each product image under 5MB. The product-page recommendation is the one to use when preparing catalog photography.
Dimensions, aspect ratio and cropping
Squarespace product images do not have to be square. Aspect ratio means the relationship between width and height: 1:1 is square, 2:3 is portrait, and 3:2 is landscape. Choose the ratio based on your products and your store design, not on a supposed platform-wide “best” value.
Choose a ratio for the way customers browse
- Square (1:1): useful for consistent catalog grids and products that fit comfortably in a centered frame.
- Portrait (such as 2:3): suits clothing, bottles and tall objects, but consumes more vertical space on phones.
- Landscape (such as 3:2): works for furniture, horizontal products and wide compositions.
The strongest choice is usually the ratio that keeps every item consistent in a grid and leaves enough room for the product’s silhouette. A mixed catalog can use different source ratios, but a uniform display ratio may cause some images to be cropped or letterboxed.

Understand template cropping
Store-page and product-detail settings can crop an image to fill a container. Keep a safe margin around the product, especially around handles, footwear, labels and other edges that must remain visible. Check both the store grid and the product-detail preview after changing the aspect-ratio setting; a crop that looks good in one location may cut off the product in another.
Product-detail pages can provide image zoom, and quick-view lightboxes can let customers inspect texture and fine detail. Those views make a sharp 2500px source more valuable than a small thumbnail, but they do not eliminate the need for a consistent catalog presentation.
How many images should a product have?
Squarespace allows up to 100 images per product. That is a ceiling, not a target. More files increase the amount a product page must load, and Squarespace recommends keeping pages under 5MB.
Assign each image a job
- Featured image: the first or explicitly selected image shown in store grids, product blocks, summary blocks and the product-detail page. Use the clearest, most representative view.
- Additional images: show rear and side angles, scale, texture, packaging, close-ups and an in-use or staged view.
- Variant images: associate a color, size or other option with the correct visual so the customer can see what they are selecting.
Remove near-duplicates that do not answer a different customer question. A shorter, purposeful gallery is generally easier to browse than a page filled with barely different shots.

File size, formats and color settings
Stay below 5MB and target 500KB
Every product image must remain under 5MB. For faster loading, Squarespace recommends aiming below 500KB when practical. Treat 500KB as a performance goal rather than a reason to destroy detail: product texture, fine print and accurate edges matter more than reaching an arbitrary number.
Export at the chosen pixel width, then compress and inspect the result at 100% zoom. If compression creates ringing around text, muddy fabric or jagged edges, raise the quality setting or use a less aggressive encoder before uploading.
Pick the right format

Squarespace normally converts site images to WebP for display. Upload JPG, PNG or WebP according to your source and let Squarespace handle normal browser delivery unless you have a specific reason not to.
Use RGB or sRGB
Convert camera or design files to RGB, preferably sRGB, before export. CMYK is intended for print and may produce incorrect or dull colors in browsers and on mobile screens.

A reliable preparation workflow
- Start with the best original. Use a sharp, properly exposed photograph or render. Do not upscale a small, blurry file and expect new detail.
- Crop deliberately. Set the composition and leave safe space for the crop used by your store template.
- Convert to RGB/sRGB. Confirm the export profile before saving.
- Resize the long edge to about 2500px. Keep the original dimensions available for future edits.
- Export as JPG, PNG or WebP. Use JPG for most photos and PNG when transparency or crisp graphic edges are essential.
- Compress. Keep the file below 5MB and aim for 500KB or less where visual quality remains acceptable.
- Upload and configure the gallery. Select the featured image, add useful angles, and attach variant images where applicable.
- Check every context. Review the store grid, product-detail gallery, quick view, zoom, desktop and mobile breakpoints.
- Retain originals. Squarespace advises keeping your original files locally so you can re-export at another ratio or quality later.
Diagnosing blurry or poorly cropped product images
The image is blurry on desktop
Check the uploaded width first. If it is below 1500px, replace it with a larger original rather than merely enlarging the existing file. Also inspect whether the template is stretching a small thumbnail or whether the source itself is out of focus.
The product is cut off in the grid
Review the store-page aspect-ratio and crop behavior. Recompose with more margin around the object, choose a less aggressive container ratio, or use a consistent canvas that keeps the complete product inside the safe area.
Colors look wrong after upload
Re-export in sRGB and check the file in a standard browser. CMYK files are designed for print and may not render reliably online.
The page loads slowly
Check the total image weight, not just pixel dimensions. Remove redundant gallery images, compress files toward 500KB, and keep the product page under Squarespace’s recommended 5MB. A 2500px source can still be efficient when encoded well; a smaller PNG can be surprisingly heavy.

The upload is rejected
Confirm that the file is below 5MB, uses JPG, GIF, PNG or non-animated WebP, and is not corrupted. If a general uploader accepts a larger image but the product editor does not, follow the product-specific 5MB limit.
Testing the finished product page
- Open the store grid on a wide monitor and a phone-sized viewport.
- Open the product-detail page and test every gallery image, zoom control and quick-view lightbox.
- Switch variants and confirm that the displayed image changes to the intended color or size.
- Look for clipped edges, excessive empty space, unexpected stretching and slow first load.
- Use the browser’s network tools or a performance audit to identify unusually large files, while remembering that perceived speed also depends on scripts, fonts and other page content.
