Its limit is $500,000 per customer, including up to $250,000 for cash—not $500,000 plus another $250,000. SIPC does not reimburse you when an investment loses value.
When does SIPC protection apply?
The Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) protects eligible customer property held at a financially troubled brokerage firm that is a SIPC member when SIPC steps in. The issue is whether cash or securities are missing from customer accounts as the brokerage liquidation begins—not whether your portfolio performed well.

SIPC says it may replace missing securities when possible. Protection is not automatic merely because you use an online investing app: identify the broker-dealer that actually carries your account and verify that entity’s membership. A familiar brand, app, or bank affiliation by itself does not establish that the account is held at a SIPC-member firm. SIPC also says, “You must file a claim to receive protection from SIPC.” See SIPC’s overview of what it protects and What Is SIPC?.
What is the SIPC limit?
SIPC’s stated limit is $500,000 per customer, including a maximum of $250,000 for cash claims. The cash limit is part of the $500,000 overall limit, not an additional amount. These are the figures in SIPC’s investor guidance checked on October 7, 2026; the pages do not identify an original publication year.

Which assets and cash can qualify?
Securities
Eligible securities held in a customer account may be covered if they are missing in a qualifying brokerage failure. SIPC’s coverage is limited to property that meets the applicable legal definition; it is not a promise that every product shown in an account is protected. SIPC’s FAQ describes limited treatment for certain futures contracts and options in qualifying SEC-approved portfolio-margining accounts, so those exceptions should not be generalized to all futures or options.
Cash held for securities transactions
Cash held for a customer in connection with buying or selling securities may qualify, subject to the $250,000 cash sublimit and the $500,000 overall cap. The purpose of the cash matters: money held for another purpose does not necessarily qualify as customer cash for securities transactions. SIPC identifies cash associated with commodities trading, including foreign-exchange trading, as outside this cash protection.

Money market mutual funds
Money market mutual fund shares are treated as securities, not as cash for the $250,000 cash sublimit. They fall under the overall securities limit if otherwise eligible, and their value can still decline. SIPC’s investor FAQ explains this distinction.

SIPC says digital or crypto assets that do not qualify as securities under the Securities Investor Protection Act are not protected. It also says unregistered digital-asset investment contracts are not protected securities even when held through a SIPC-member brokerage. Classification can depend on the product and applicable law, so do not assume that every digital asset is either covered or excluded without checking its status and current SIPC guidance. Commodities and futures are generally outside SIPC protection, subject to the limited qualifying-account exceptions described above.

Does SIPC cover market losses or bad advice?
No. SIPC does not compensate you because a stock or fund fell in price, became worthless, or was recommended through bad or unsuitable advice. As SIPC puts it, “SIPC does not protect against the decline in value of your securities.” Its role is to address eligible customer property missing after a member brokerage failure, not to guarantee investment value or performance. It is also distinct from FDIC insurance for qualifying bank deposits.

Not automatically. SIPC combines accounts held in the same capacity at the same brokerage firm when applying the limits. Accounts held in distinct capacities may be treated separately, but each capacity remains subject to the $500,000 overall limit, including the $250,000 cash sublimit. Simply opening additional accounts in the same capacity at the same firm does not create additional coverage. See SIPC’s guidance for investors with multiple accounts.

What to check at an online brokerage
- Find the carrying broker-dealer. Check account documents or the broker’s disclosures to identify the legal entity that holds or carries the account, rather than relying only on the app or consumer-facing brand.
- Verify membership. Confirm that the carrying broker-dealer is a SIPC member using SIPC’s current information. Membership does not mean that every asset is protected or that investments are safe from market losses.
- Identify what you hold and why cash is there. Distinguish securities and money market fund shares from cash, and determine whether cash is held in connection with securities transactions or for another purpose.
- Keep the limits and claim requirement in mind. Apply the caps by customer and capacity, and understand that a customer must file a claim when SIPC protection proceedings require one.
