First, do not send another transaction. Find the original transaction hash, verify the token, amount, destination address, network and status in the sending service and the relevant block explorer. If the transfer is confirmed, it normally cannot be recalled by the sender. Your next step depends on who controls the destination: it may be your own wallet on a different network, an exchange or other custodian, or another person.
A wrong-network transfer to a wallet you control can sometimes be a display or compatibility problem rather than a loss. A deposit sent to a custodian requires an official support case, while a transfer to another person’s wallet generally requires that person’s cooperation. No issuer, wallet or recovery service can promise to retrieve every confirmed transfer.

Start with a calm, evidence-first check
Save the transaction record before taking any further action. Open the sending wallet or exchange through its normal app or website and copy the transaction hash (also called a transaction ID). Then open the block explorer for the network shown in the transaction and compare the record with what you intended to send.

- Confirm the asset. Check the exact stablecoin contract or asset name, not just a ticker. Make sure the amount matches the intended transfer.
- Confirm the destination. Compare every character of the recipient address with the address you meant to use. Do not rely on a shortened address displayed by a wallet.
- Confirm the network. A stablecoin can exist on several networks. The network selected at send time is part of the transaction; it is not automatically changed by the receiving wallet.
- Check the on-chain status. A pending, confirmed or failed status leads to different actions. The status shown by a wallet can lag behind the explorer, so check both.
- Record the date and time. Keep screenshots or a written record for a support case, but remove seed phrases and private keys from anything you share.
Do not make a second transfer as a test, “repair” payment or fee payment. It can create a second loss and does not alter the first transaction.

Use the transaction status to choose the right branch
If the transfer is still pending
Pending does not automatically mean cancellable. On a self-custody blockchain transaction, the available options depend on the chain and wallet, and the recipient address cannot be changed after a transaction has been accepted by the network. On a custodial service, however, the provider may have a narrow cancellation process.
One documented example is a pending transfer to an email address linked to a Coinbase account: Coinbase says such a transfer may be canceled under its product rules. That example is specific to that service and destination type. It is not evidence that an on-chain transfer to a blockchain address can generally be canceled. Follow the exact instructions in the provider’s official help center and contact support immediately if the service offers a pending-transfer intervention.
If the transfer is confirmed
A confirmed transaction has been recorded on the network. The sender normally cannot reverse it, and the stablecoin issuer usually cannot recall it from an unrelated address. Circle’s USDC terms put the limit plainly: “This means that such transaction is irreversible and Circle does not have the ability to reverse or recall any transaction once initiated.”

Confirmation does not tell you whether the funds are recoverable. It tells you that the transaction itself is complete. Recovery then depends on destination control: your own wallet, a responsive custodian, or another person willing and able to return the funds.

If the transaction failed
A failed transaction may have consumed a network fee without transferring the stablecoins. Verify the explorer record and your balance before trying again. Do not assume a wallet’s error message means the funds reached the wrong address; the explorer record is the authoritative place to distinguish a failed transfer from a confirmed one.
When the destination is your own wallet on another network
This is the most important case to check before concluding that funds are gone. If you control the destination keys and sent USDC on a network different from the one currently selected in your wallet, the balance may simply be hidden. Circle’s USDC guidance says that a completed transfer may require switching the wallet to the network used for the transfer before the funds appear.
- Identify the network recorded in the transaction explorer.
- In your wallet, switch to that exact network using the wallet’s normal network selector.
- Confirm that the wallet address on that network is the address shown as the destination in the transaction.
- Refresh the balance and transaction history.
- If the correct network is selected but USDC is still absent, use the wallet’s official “add token” or “import token” function and verify the token contract address from a trusted official source.
These steps change what your wallet displays; they do not reverse a transfer. They also apply specifically to USDC guidance and should not be generalized to every stablecoin. Other tokens and wallets may require different supported networks, token contracts or recovery procedures. Never import a token contract copied from an unsolicited message.

An exchange, payment service or hosted wallet controls the private keys for its deposit addresses. You cannot use your own wallet to move a deposit that the custodian controls, so open a case through the custodian’s official website or app.

Prepare a complete support case
Include the information the custodian needs to locate the deposit:
- Transaction hash or transaction ID
- Asset and amount
- Sender address and destination address
- Network used
- Date and time, including time zone if known
- The sending wallet or provider, including wallet version where available
- Your account details requested by the official support form
Circle’s support checklist specifically asks for the transaction hash, wallet address and provider or version, networks, time and amount. Supplying these details in the first message can reduce back-and-forth, but it does not guarantee crediting or return of the funds.
Describe the problem precisely
State whether the issue is a wrong network, an unsupported asset, a deposit sent to the wrong account, or a missing deposit that appears correct on-chain. Attach the explorer link only if the support form accepts it, and redact unrelated personal information. Use only support links reached independently from the custodian’s official domain or app. Do not trust a social-media account that claims to be support merely because it knows your transaction hash.
Understand the custodian’s limits
A custodian may be able to identify an address it controls and, in some cases, manually credit or return a deposit. Policies differ by platform, asset and network. Some cases involve technical recovery work or fees; any fee must be explained in the official case process, not demanded by an unsolicited “recovery agent.” Treat support assistance as an investigation, not a promise.

When another person controls the address
If the destination is a friend, contractor, merchant or other identifiable person, contact that person using a channel you already trust. Send the transaction hash, asset, amount and network so they can verify the receipt independently. Ask them to send the funds back to a fresh address you provide and verify carefully.
A blockchain address alone does not reveal its owner’s identity. Do not accuse a person or publish an address based solely on a mistaken transfer. If the recipient is unknown or refuses to cooperate, there is no sender-side recall mechanism for a confirmed transaction. The practical return route is the recipient’s voluntary transfer, subject to that person’s control of the keys and any applicable legal or platform rules.

People who have just lost funds are common targets for follow-on fraud. The FTC warns that recovery scammers promise to retrieve lost money, then demand an upfront fee or financial information. A legitimate provider will not need your seed phrase or private key to investigate a transaction.

- Never share a seed phrase, private key, wallet password, one-time code or recovery file.
- Do not grant remote access to your computer or phone for a supposed recovery session.
- Do not connect your wallet to a site sent by a stranger or sign an unfamiliar transaction.
- Reach support through the provider’s official app or website that you navigate to yourself.
- Be suspicious of anyone who asks for payment in cryptocurrency before explaining a verifiable, official process.
A person who contacts you after seeing a public transaction can know the amount and address without having any ability to recover the funds. Public transaction data is not proof that the contact is affiliated with an exchange, issuer or law-enforcement agency.
Three cases that look similar but are not

Recovery likelihood cannot be reduced to a universal percentage. It varies with the chain, asset, destination type, technical support and the recipient’s willingness to act. No authoritative statistic establishes a general recovery rate for mistaken stablecoin transfers.
What not to do while the case is open
- Do not send another stablecoin transaction to the same address to “unlock” or combine the first one.
- Do not pay a stranger who claims to be an issuer employee, blockchain investigator or wallet engineer.
- Do not delete the transaction history, wallet data or support emails.
- Do not expose private keys while proving ownership; a transaction hash and public address are normally sufficient for initial triage.
- Do not assume a token-display problem is a reversal, or assume a confirmed transfer is recoverable simply because it is visible on a block explorer.
Prevent the next address mistake
After the immediate case is documented, reduce the chance of repeating it. Copy and paste addresses rather than typing them, then compare the first and last characters before confirming. Verify the network in both the sending and receiving interfaces. For a new recipient, send a small amount only when the recipient and network support that test and you understand that even a test transfer is final. Save trusted addresses in a wallet’s address book only after independently verifying them.
For exchange deposits, copy the deposit instructions from the account you intend to fund immediately before sending. Check whether a memo, tag or network selection is required. Keep a record of the asset, network and destination you used. These checks cannot undo a confirmed error, but they address the common points at which a wrong-address or wrong-network transfer begins.

Locate the hash, verify the explorer record and stop sending additional funds. If the transfer is pending in a custodial workflow, ask that provider about its narrowly defined cancellation process. If the destination is your own wallet, check the actual network and token visibility. If it is an exchange, file a complete official support case. If it belongs to another person, request their cooperation. Once the transaction is confirmed, treat recovery as uncertain and protect your remaining assets from anyone offering guaranteed help.
