Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →An AI security test must assess the complete deployed system and its lifecycle, not just the model’s replies. That means testing users and identities, prompts and retrieved content, application code, APIs, tools, data, dependencies, hosting, monitoring and recovery. For an agent, the test must follow the entire path from an instruction to a tool call and its real-world side effect, with authorization enforced outside the model.
Why model-only testing misses serious risk
A language model is one component in an application. An attacker may never need to make the model produce an obviously unsafe answer if they can exploit an API, retrieve another user’s documents, steal a service credential, poison a data source or persuade an agent to misuse a permitted tool.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
OWASP’s red-teaming guidance treats API misuse, system-integration weaknesses and data exposure as part of an AI security assessment. NIST’s AI security work likewise describes attacks on AI workloads and the generative-AI ecosystem that target software and infrastructure around the model. As NIST puts it, “AI systems are built and operate on software.” The practical consequence is simple: a safe-looking response is not evidence that the application is secure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with a system map and threat model
Before choosing attack prompts or scanners, document what is actually deployed. Record the model name and version, system and developer prompts, users and roles, data stores, retrieval indexes, APIs, external services, tools, hosting components, deployment pipeline and human review points.

Draw the trust boundaries
Mark every boundary where data or authority changes:
- What a user can submit, upload or influence.
- What the application retrieves or adds to the model context.
- What the model can generate and how application code interprets it.
- Which tools, APIs, databases or messaging systems can receive model output.
- Which identity and permissions are used for each call.
- Where humans approve, reject or override an action.
For each boundary, ask what an attacker can submit, influence, read or cause the system to do. Include indirect paths such as instructions hidden in a retrieved document, a compromised connector or a package used during deployment. OWASP recommends a risk-based scope tailored to the system’s use; not every integration can be meaningfully tested as a black box, so combine external testing with code, configuration and architecture review where necessary.
Prioritize exposure and impact
Rank endpoints and actions by internet exposure, data sensitivity, privilege and consequence. A public question-answering bot over public documents has a different priority list from an internal assistant connected to payroll records or an agent that can change customer accounts. Document the environments, versions, accounts and test data that are in scope, along with explicit exclusions.
Test model behavior and adversarial robustness
Model testing remains necessary, but it should be tied to the application’s security requirements rather than treated as a collection of clever prompts.

Probe realistic failure modes
- Prompt injection that attempts to override system instructions or alter the task.
- Requests designed to elicit secrets, personal information or other restricted content.
- Adversarial examples that cause misclassification, unsafe recommendations or policy bypasses.
- Context manipulation, including conflicting instructions in user input, memory or retrieved material.
- Output manipulation that produces unsafe code, queries, messages or decisions for downstream components.
- Repeated, multi-turn attempts that gradually move the system outside its intended limits.
OWASP’s AI Testing Guide v1, announced November 26, 2025, emphasizes specialized robustness methods because AI behavior is non-deterministic and adversarial examples do not fit ordinary functional testing. Define expected refusal, redaction, escalation and uncertainty behavior in advance, then test it across representative inputs and repeated runs. Record the model version, prompt set, temperature or other relevant settings, retrieval state and pass/fail criteria.
Do not make prompt attacks the whole plan. A model may resist an injection while the surrounding application still exposes an unprotected endpoint or executes unsafe output.
Test the application, APIs and integrations
Apply conventional application-security discipline to every interface around the model.
Authentication and authorization
- Verify that every API and connector authenticates callers and enforces the intended role.
- Test horizontal access: can one user retrieve another user’s conversations, files or embeddings?
- Test vertical access: can a low-privilege account invoke administrative tools or sensitive workflows?
- Check authorization again at the receiving service, rather than trusting a role or instruction supplied by the model.
Input, output and resource controls
- Validate file types, encodings, lengths and structured fields before they reach prompts or tools.
- Treat model output as untrusted data. Test whether it can become executable code, a database query, an HTML message, a shell argument or an approval decision without validation.
- Exercise rate limits, token limits, concurrency controls and timeouts. Look for denial-of-service paths caused by oversized context, recursive tool calls or expensive retrieval.
- Confirm that secrets are excluded from prompts, logs, traces, error messages and client-visible responses.
- Test failure paths: timeouts, partial tool results, malformed output, upstream outages and retries must fail closed where the action is sensitive.
OWASP’s red-teaming material specifically calls out integration pitfalls, API misuse and data exposure. Include the retrieval layer and connectors: verify document-level permissions, tenant isolation, deletion behavior and protection against cross-user or cross-project results.

Put data, model provenance and the software supply chain in scope
Security testing must cover the material that shapes behavior and the components that deliver it.
Data controls
- Identify who can read or alter training, fine-tuning, retrieval and evaluation data.
- Test poisoning and tampering scenarios, including unauthorized documents, labels, examples, embeddings or evaluation cases.
- Verify provenance, integrity checks, versioning, retention and rollback for data and indexes.
- Confirm that sensitive or regulated data is minimized, access-controlled and removed when policy requires.
Models and dependencies
- Record the origin, version, license and integrity of third-party models and model weights.
- Maintain an inventory of packages, containers, plugins, APIs and infrastructure components.
- Scan for vulnerabilities and test the patching process, including how quickly affected components can be identified and replaced.
- Review build and deployment integrity: source control, artifact signing, registries, configuration, secrets and separation between development and production.
- Assess suppliers and hosted services for access, incident notification, data handling and change control.
OWASP’s supply-chain guidance recommends supplier vetting, component inventories, provenance and integrity checks, vulnerability scanning and patching, plus assessment of models and data for tampering or poisoning. NIST’s security and resilience material calls out training and test data, model weights and configuration settings as components that need protection.
Give agents a separate action-and-authority test
An agent adds a control problem: it can interpret instructions, select tools, use credentials and create side effects. Test the complete chain, not just whether the final answer sounds reasonable.

- Submit a normal user request and record the instruction, memory and retrieved context supplied to the planner.
- Insert untrusted instructions in user content, a document, web result or tool response. Check whether the agent changes its plan.
- Observe tool selection and arguments. Test whether the agent can call a tool outside the task, alter parameters or repeat calls indefinitely.
- Inspect the identity used for the call. Confirm it has only the minimum required privileges and cannot be confused with the requesting user.
- Verify authorization at the API or database that performs the action. Do not rely on a model-generated “approved” field.
- Attempt consequential operations such as sending, deleting, purchasing or changing records with missing, conflicting or low-confidence information.
- Check for an auditable record containing the requester, approvals, tool, arguments, result, timestamp and final side effect.
Use separate credentials and isolated test data for destructive scenarios. Sensitive actions should require an explicit approval step or another control proportionate to their impact. OWASP’s Top 10 for Agentic Applications announcement, published December 9, 2025 (with a December 10 dateline), highlights behavior hijacking, tool misuse, and identity and privilege abuse as risks to test. Confirm the current OWASP resource before using its taxonomy labels as a formal checklist.

Test hosting, operations and incident response
The model-serving stack is part of the attack surface. Include compute and storage, orchestration, container and package registries, network boundaries, deployment pipelines, secrets stores, administrative interfaces and operational accounts.
Security and resilience checks
- Test isolation between tenants, workloads, environments and model-serving processes.
- Review network egress, service-to-service authentication, storage permissions and administrative access.
- Attempt to expose secrets through logs, traces, debugging endpoints, crash reports and monitoring dashboards.
- Exercise deployment rollback, model rollback, dependency replacement and configuration recovery.
- Verify capacity controls and availability protections against prompt floods, oversized files, recursive agents and expensive retrieval.
A NIST CSRC record for the presentation “MITRE ATLAS: Real World AI Security Attacks and Community Capabilities,” dated September 9, 2025 and presented by Christina Liaghati of MITRE, describes demonstrated attacks on hosting workloads and the generative-AI ecosystem outside the model, including attack paths that can be deployed without user interaction. That is why infrastructure and pipeline testing cannot be deferred until after model evaluation.
Monitoring and response
Define what should trigger an alert: unusual tool sequences, privilege changes, retrieval of restricted records, prompt-injection indicators, abnormal token or cost use, repeated refusals followed by success, and unexpected model or dependency changes. Test that alerts contain enough context to investigate without exposing sensitive content. Run an incident exercise covering credential revocation, session termination, connector disablement, model or data rollback, customer notification and evidence preservation.

Choose coverage by system type
There is no universal AI test package. The table below shows how authority and data sensitivity change the emphasis.
Best Value
| System | Highest-priority tests | Additional evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone model or public chatbot | Adversarial robustness, unsafe-output handling, abuse limits, privacy leakage and API authentication | Model/version record, prompt corpus, refusal criteria and rate-limit results |
| Retrieval-augmented application | Document permissions, tenant isolation, poisoning, deletion, connector security and prompt injection through retrieved content | Index provenance, access-control tests and sample retrieval traces |
| Internal assistant with confidential data | Identity, authorization, cross-user exposure, logging, retention, secrets handling and sensitive-output controls | Role matrix, data classification, audit records and redaction tests |
| Agent with read-only tools | Behavior hijacking, tool boundaries, credential scope, argument validation, loops and data exfiltration | Tool inventory, permission map, replayable traces and stop conditions |
| Agent with write or transactional access | All of the above plus approval gates, dual control, idempotency, rollback, fraud scenarios and side-effect verification | End-to-end action evidence, approval records, rollback drill and residual-risk sign-off |
Use code and configuration review, API and integration testing, adversarial red teaming, supply-chain assessment and runtime monitoring together when the impact warrants it. Select tools only after defining the threats and required coverage. OWASP’s Q2–Q3 2025 solutions reference guide maps open-source and commercial categories to LLM and agentic risks and lifecycle stages; its live directory describes itself as a community resource, not a comprehensive list or endorsement. Treat listings as leads for evaluation, not independent proof that a product works.
Make testing repeatable across the lifecycle
- Set a baseline at design and before release. Record the architecture, threat model, versions, accounts, data sets, test cases and expected controls.
- Run layered tests. Combine manual review, automated regression cases, API tests, adversarial exercises, dependency checks and infrastructure review.
- Classify findings by consequence. Prioritize unauthorized access, secret exposure, destructive actions and integrity failures above low-impact wording defects.
- Track mitigations to evidence. For each finding, record the affected component, reproduction conditions, owner, fix, residual risk and retest result.
- Monitor production. Watch for new attack patterns, unusual actions, drift in data or permissions and changes in supplier components.
- Retest after material change. Trigger targeted and full regression testing when the model, prompts, retrieval data, tools, permissions, APIs, dependencies, hosting or monitoring changes.
OWASP’s red-teaming announcement emphasizes continual oversight: “no AI model is ever truly ‘done’ or ‘secure.’” Its solutions reference guide organizes practices across planning, data handling, deployment and monitoring, which is a useful way to assign ownership rather than treating security as a single pre-launch gate.
What a credible test report contains
A useful report lets another team understand exactly what was tested and what remains uncertain. Include:
- System purpose, users, environments, regions and deployment date.
- Model, prompt, retrieval, tool, dependency and configuration versions.
- Trust boundaries, identities, permissions, sensitive data classes and high-impact actions.
- Methods used: architecture review, code review, API testing, adversarial testing, supply-chain checks and operational exercises.
- Test cases, assumptions, pass criteria, observed behavior and reproducibility details.
- Findings with impact, exploit conditions, affected assets, remediation, owner and retest status.
- Explicit limits: components, accounts, data, attack paths or environments not tested.
- Residual risks, compensating controls, monitoring commitments and the next review trigger.
Stating limits is part of security. A clean prompt-evaluation result does not establish that authorization, dependencies or hosting are safe, and a limited black-box exercise cannot certify internal controls it could not observe.
Framework context
NIST published the Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework: Generative Artificial Intelligence Profile (NIST AI 600-1) on July 26, 2024. NIST describes it as a voluntary, cross-sector companion to AI RMF 1.0 for incorporating trustworthiness considerations into AI design, development, use and evaluation; the publication page was updated April 8, 2026.
OWASP’s AI Testing Guide v1 was announced November 26, 2025 as a lifecycle-oriented testing framework. OWASP’s Gen AI Red Teaming Guide announcement, dated January 22, 2025, describes risk-based testing across model and system risks with continuous monitoring. These are practical organizing frameworks, not substitutes for a threat model tailored to your application.
The right stopping point is therefore not “the model passed.” It is evidence that the deployed system’s data, interfaces, permissions, actions, infrastructure and operating controls were tested against the risks that matter for its users—and that those tests will run again when the system changes.
