Sharp-force trauma is skeletal damage produced when an edged, pointed or beveled object acts on bone. Archaeologists and forensic anthropologists describe it through marks such as incisions, punctures, kerfs and chop marks. Blunt-force trauma is damage caused by impact from a blunt object or surface, producing deformation, tool impressions and characteristic fractures. These labels identify a mechanism and the observed damage; neither one, by itself, proves a particular weapon, intent, perpetrator or manner of death.

Sharp-force and blunt-force trauma are mechanism categories

Trauma terminology starts with what physically acted on the bone. In sharp-force trauma, a relatively thin edge, point or beveled surface concentrates force into a small area. In blunt-force trauma, a broader, non-cutting surface transfers impact energy to the bone or the body strikes a hard surface. The distinction is about how the damage was made, not about a conclusion concerning who used an object or why.

The same archaeological assemblage can contain both mechanisms. A skeleton may have a cut mark on a rib, a puncture on a vertebra and fractures caused by later collapse of a burial. Each alteration must be described and interpreted separately rather than assigned to one dramatic event.

Feature Sharp-force trauma Blunt-force trauma
Physical mechanism An edged, pointed or beveled object acts on bone. Low-velocity impact from a blunt object, or impact of the body against a blunt surface.
Common skeletal evidence Incisions, punctures, kerfs and chop or hacking marks. Plastic deformation, blunt tool impressions and fracture patterns associated with impact.
What the category supports A cautious assessment that a cutting, pointed or beveled action is compatible with the mark. A cautious assessment that impact by a blunt surface or object is compatible with the deformation or fracture.
What it does not establish alone A unique implement, a specific event, intent, identity of an actor, cause of death or manner of death. A unique implement, intent, identity of an actor, cause of death or manner of death.

ANSI/ASB Standard 147, First Edition (2024), sets out a framework for skeletal-trauma analysis and explicitly states: “This document does not address cause and manner of death.” That boundary is important in archaeological reporting, where the remains may be incomplete and the circumstances of recovery are separated from the original event by centuries or millennia.

What sharp-force marks look like on archaeological bone

Incisions and linear cuts

An incision is a narrow alteration made as an edge moves across the bone surface. Analysts record its location, orientation, length, depth, edges and cross-sectional shape, along with whether the mark cuts across other features. A clean-looking line is not automatically a sharp-force injury: excavation tools, animal activity and post-depositional abrasion can create superficially similar grooves. The mark must be examined in the condition of the surrounding bone.

Punctures

A pointed object can concentrate force into a small penetration or depression. The outline and internal walls may preserve information about the direction of force and the geometry of the point, but a puncture rarely identifies one exact implement. A broken point, a narrow awl-like tool and other pointed objects can produce overlapping dimensions, especially when the bone is thin or damaged after burial.

Kerfs

A kerf is a groove or channel produced as a saw or other toothed or edged implement removes bone. Analysts consider the kerf’s width, walls, floor, repeated striations and relationship to the fracture. Sawing can leave multiple fine striae, while a single pass by an edge may leave a different surface pattern. Weathering and erosion can erase these details, so the absence of striations does not prove that sawing did not occur.

Chop and hacking marks

Chopping or hacking involves a relatively forceful blow by a sharp or beveled edge. The resulting defect can include a broad kerf-like groove, a V-shaped or otherwise angular cross-section, impact-associated fractures and localized crushing. Experimental work, including the 2023 study by McGehee, Schultz and Freidline, shows why analysts should be cautious about moving from a chop mark to a named tool class: different tools, angles, force levels and bone regions can produce overlapping features.

Why “knife wound” is usually too specific

“Sharp-force trauma” is broader than “knife wound.” Blades are one possible source, but pointed tools, axes, saws and other edged or beveled implements can produce relevant damage. Unless the morphology and context support a narrower conclusion, a report should use “sharp-force mark,” “incised alteration,” “puncture” or another morphology-based term.

Even when a mark is compatible with a blade, compatibility is not identification. Bone records the interaction between an object, a body region, force and movement. It does not preserve a label bearing the object’s manufacture, ownership or use. Analysts therefore distinguish between:

  • Observed feature: for example, a linear groove with a V-shaped cross-section on a rib.
  • Mechanism assessment: the feature is consistent with an edged implement moving across bone.
  • Tool-class assessment: a particular class may be more or less compatible, but alternatives remain possible.
  • Event reconstruction: direction, sequence or number of blows may be proposed only when the observations and context justify it.

How blunt-force trauma differs in the skeleton

Plastic deformation and impact marks

Blunt impact spreads force over a broader area than a sharp edge. Bone may bend, compress, indent or show a broad tool impression before it fractures. The appearance depends on the object, impact velocity, angle, the bone’s shape and whether the bone was fresh, dry or already weakened.

Fracture patterns

Blunt-force assessment often focuses on fracture morphology: fracture margins, radiating and concentric lines, crushing, bending and the relationship between multiple breaks. A fracture pattern can support an impact interpretation, but it is not a simple code for one object. A fall, a blow, collapse of a structure or pressure from burial can generate overlapping fracture features.

Mixed damage

An object with both an edge and a heavy body can produce sharp and blunt components in one action. An axe, for example, may leave a cut-like defect together with crushing or radiating fractures. Analysts should describe each component rather than forcing the entire injury into an either-or category.

Timing: antemortem, perimortem and postmortem

Mechanism and timing answer different questions. A sharp-force mark can be antemortem, perimortem or postmortem, just as a blunt-force fracture can occur at any of those stages.

Antemortem damage

Antemortem trauma happened while the person was alive and enough biological response time remained for healing. Callus formation, rounded remodeling, altered bone edges and other repair changes can support this classification. Healing indicates survival for some period; it does not identify the object or explain the social circumstances of the injury.

Perimortem damage

Perimortem refers to damage sustained when bone was still fresh and retained its biomechanical behavior. Fresh bone tends to bend and fracture differently from dry, brittle bone. Analysts examine fracture-surface texture, bending, plastic deformation and the relationship of the damage to the rest of the skeleton. “Perimortem” is not a precise clock reading and does not prove that the injury caused death. A fresh-bone injury may have occurred shortly before death, during the fatal event, or shortly afterward while the remains still had comparable mechanical properties.

Postmortem damage

Postmortem alterations occur after death. Soil pressure, root growth, weathering, scavenging, excavation, handling and later disturbance can create grooves, pits, breaks and edge damage. Dry bone often fractures more sharply and irregularly than fresh bone, but preservation is variable. A postmortem mark can mimic a cut or obscure an earlier injury, so timing must be assessed alongside depositional history.

Why archaeological context changes the interpretation

A mark is not self-interpreting. Analysts document the burial environment, skeletal position, completeness, surface preservation, associated objects and evidence of disturbance. The same groove has a different evidentiary weight on well-preserved bone in an undisturbed burial than on weathered fragments recovered from a mixed deposit.

  • Weathering: sun, drying and repeated wetting can crack and erode surfaces, removing fine tool-mark detail.
  • Scavenging: carnivore or rodent activity can leave pits, scores and gnawing that resemble human modification.
  • Soil and roots: chemical alteration, abrasion and root etching can overprint or hide trauma.
  • Recovery: trowels, screens, transport and cleaning can add fresh scratches or enlarge fragile breaks.
  • Later disturbance: construction, looting, flooding or reburial can move bones and create new damage.

The review “Differentiating trauma from taphonomic alterations” emphasizes this comparison between trauma and postmortem processes. In practice, the analyst asks whether a proposed injury explains the feature better than the known taphonomic alternatives, not merely whether the feature looks dramatic.

How analysts examine a suspected sharp- or blunt-force mark

  1. Record provenience and condition. Note the element, side, anatomical location, burial or recovery context, completeness, surface preservation and any disturbance.
  2. Describe before interpreting. Photograph and document dimensions, orientation, margins, cross-section, depth, fracture relationships, surface texture and any striations. Avoid naming a weapon at this stage.
  3. Inspect the feature at appropriate scale. Direct observation, magnification and, where available, three-dimensional imaging can reveal details that are invisible in a general photograph. The method used should be recorded because cleaning, lighting and magnification affect what can be seen.
  4. Assess bone mechanics. Decide whether the damage behaves like an alteration made in fresh bone, dry bone or an uncertain state. This is a biomechanical assessment, not a calendar date.
  5. Test alternatives. Compare the feature with weathering, scavenging, root etching, excavation damage, accidental breakage and other taphonomic explanations.
  6. Compare associated marks. Look for repeated orientation, similar morphology, fracture sequencing or distribution across the skeleton. Multiple compatible observations can strengthen a mechanism assessment, but repetition still does not identify a unique weapon.
  7. State conclusions at the supported level. Separate observation, mechanism, timing and uncertainty. Explain what is consistent with the evidence and what cannot be determined.

What the evidence can and cannot tell you

Direction and movement

Beveling, mark walls, exit features and fracture geometry may support a cautious inference about the direction of force or movement. Such inferences become weaker when the bone is incomplete, the mark has been weathered or the object moved irregularly. A directional interpretation should be presented as a hypothesis tied to the observed features, not as a complete reconstruction.

Number and sequence of impacts

Intersecting marks can sometimes establish that one alteration cuts or disrupts another, providing a relative sequence. That does not automatically equal a count of blows: one pass can create several connected defects, and later breakage can divide one original mark.

Intent, identity and manner of death

Sharp- or blunt-force classification does not establish intent, the identity of an attacker, self-infliction, accident, homicide or warfare. Those questions require independent archaeological, historical, contextual or investigative evidence. The 2024 ANSI/ASB standard’s exclusion of cause and manner of death is a reminder not to treat skeletal morphology as a legal conclusion.

Common interpretation mistakes

  • Calling every straight groove a cut. Straightness alone is not diagnostic; inspect cross-section, margins, striations and preservation.
  • Equating a sharp mark with a knife. Use a morphology-based description unless a narrower tool inference is demonstrable.
  • Using “perimortem” as “at the moment of death.” The term concerns fresh-bone behavior, not an exact time interval or causation.
  • Ignoring the burial environment. Taphonomic processes can create or alter the same visual features as trauma.
  • Inferring a story from one mark. A single alteration should be interpreted with the entire skeleton, context and preservation history.
  • Treating absence of damage as proof of absence of violence. Poor preservation, missing elements and soft-tissue-only injuries can leave no diagnostic skeletal mark.

How to report findings clearly

A useful report keeps four layers separate:

  1. Morphology: exactly what is visible and where.
  2. Mechanism: whether an edged, pointed, beveled or blunt action is compatible with it.
  3. Timing: whether healing, fresh-bone behavior or postmortem alteration supports antemortem, perimortem or postmortem classification.
  4. Limits: which alternatives remain, and whether tool identity, event sequence, cause or manner of death cannot be established.

For example, “The left sixth rib has a narrow, V-shaped linear groove with no healing. Its morphology is consistent with an edged implement, but weathering and recovery abrasion cannot be excluded; the feature does not identify a specific tool or establish cause of death” is more scientifically useful than “victim was stabbed with a knife.”

Bottom line for archaeological interpretation

Sharp-force trauma means damage compatible with an edged, pointed or beveled action; blunt-force trauma means damage compatible with impact from a blunt object or surface. Incisions, punctures, kerfs and chop marks belong to the sharp-force vocabulary, while deformation, blunt impressions and impact fractures belong to the blunt-force vocabulary. In both categories, timing, preservation and taphonomic context must be evaluated separately. The most defensible conclusion stays at the level the bone can support and avoids turning a mark into a weapon, motive or death certificate.
