A high-traffic website usually needs a scalable system rather than one oversized server. Put a CDN and edge cache in front of cacheable content, distribute requests through a load balancer, run multiple application instances with autoscaling, and operate databases and caches as separate tiers. The right CPU, RAM, storage, bandwidth and instance count can only be chosen after measuring your workload.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
There is no universal “high-traffic server”
Visitor counts alone cannot size infrastructure. Two sites with the same monthly visitors may have completely different requirements. A documentation site serving cached HTML is far easier to operate than a personalized application that performs several database writes on every request.

Capacity depends on peak requests per second, concurrent users, request and response sizes, the proportion of dynamic traffic, cache-hit rate, database work, session handling, geographic distribution, latency targets and the size and frequency of traffic bursts. Long-lived WebSocket connections and background jobs add resource patterns that ordinary page views do not reveal.
Plan for the busiest credible period, not the monthly average. A short launch or news-driven spike can exhaust connection pools, CPU or database capacity even when average utilization looks comfortable. Your design should also leave room for maintenance, failed instances and gradual growth.

The standard architecture for a busy site
Most resilient high-traffic deployments separate the public delivery layer, application layer and data layer. A typical request path looks like this:
- DNS and security: DNS directs users to the appropriate regional or global entry point. A web application firewall and other security controls can filter abusive traffic before it reaches your application.
- CDN and edge cache: Static files and other cacheable responses are served from locations near users. Cache hits reduce origin requests, latency and bandwidth use.
- Load balancer: HTTPS requests are distributed across healthy application backends. Health checks remove failed instances and allow capacity to be added or removed.
- Application tier: Multiple virtual machines, containers or serverless endpoints execute dynamic code. Stateless designs make horizontal scaling simpler.
- Cache tier: An in-memory cache stores frequently read data, sessions or computed results so the database does less repeated work.
- Database and storage: Managed relational or NoSQL databases, object storage and queues handle durable data and asynchronous jobs independently of web servers.
This arrangement avoids making one machine responsible for every function. It also lets you scale the constrained tier instead of paying to enlarge components that are not under pressure.

When a CDN and load balancer are necessary
CDN for cacheable content
A CDN is especially valuable when visitors are spread across countries or continents. Edge locations can serve images, JavaScript, CSS, video segments and cacheable HTML without contacting the origin for every request. Lower origin traffic improves throughput and reduces the distance data must travel.
CDN caching does not automatically make personalized pages cacheable. Define cache keys, time-to-live values and invalidation rules carefully. Do not cache responses containing private account data unless your application explicitly separates public and private content. Dynamic requests can still pass through the CDN for TLS termination, compression and security filtering even when the response itself is not cached.

Load balancing for multiple backends
A load balancer becomes the normal entry point once you have more than one application instance or availability zone. It spreads traffic, performs health checks and supports rolling deployments without taking the entire site offline. It also enables autoscaling groups to add capacity during a burst and remove it afterward.
Use a regional load balancer when users and origins are concentrated in one region. Global routing is more appropriate when users are worldwide, latency requirements are strict, or you operate origins in multiple regions. Global routing adds operational complexity: data replication, failover behavior, session strategy and consistent configuration all need explicit design.

Mostly static website
For documentation, media landing pages or a build-generated site, store files in object or static hosting, attach a CDN, and enable HTTPS. Static platforms can automatically serve large bursts without you managing operating-system patches or web-server processes. A separate load balancer may be unnecessary if the hosting service already provides the public endpoint; use one when you need custom routing, multiple origins or a unified entry point for static and dynamic paths.
Dynamic web application
A personalized site normally needs DNS, security controls, a CDN for public assets, an application load balancer and several VM or container backends. Keep application instances replaceable and move durable state into managed databases, object storage, queues and an in-memory cache. Autoscaling policies should respond to useful signals such as request rate, latency, CPU, memory or queue depth rather than CPU alone.

Relational workloads may use a managed SQL service with multi-zone failover and read replicas. High-volume key-value or document workloads may fit a managed NoSQL service. The choice depends on consistency, transaction requirements, access patterns and replication needs; changing database engines later is usually harder than adding another web instance.
API, streaming and WebSocket services
APIs often have small responses but high request rates, while uploads and media APIs consume substantial bandwidth and storage. WebSockets and other long-lived connections consume connection slots and memory for much longer than ordinary HTTP requests. Confirm that the load balancer, proxy timeouts and autoscaling system support your protocol. You may need connection-aware routing or a separate service for persistent connections.

Multi-region service
Deploying in multiple regions can reduce latency and improve resilience, but it is not a default requirement. A single region spread across multiple zones may meet the availability target for a regional audience. Multi-region operation requires a deliberate approach to data replication, write conflicts, backups, secrets, observability and failover testing. Global load balancing or an edge routing service can select an origin based on latency, health or policy.
Choosing VPS, dedicated, cloud, containers or serverless
| Option | Best fit | Scaling behavior | Control and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPS | Small teams needing a predictable virtual machine and moderate traffic | Usually vertical resizing; horizontal scaling requires manual orchestration or additional services | More control than serverless, but you manage updates, redundancy, monitoring and failover |
| Dedicated server | Consistent, resource-intensive workloads with predictable demand | Primarily vertical; adding machines and balancing traffic is your responsibility | Dedicated CPU, RAM and disks, but a single host is a failure domain and capacity is less elastic |
| Cloud VMs | Applications requiring operating-system or networking control | Can be combined with load balancing, autoscaling and multiple zones | Flexible architecture, with ongoing responsibility for patching, images, capacity and design |
| Managed containers | Teams packaging services as containers that need repeatable deployments | Service instances can scale horizontally; managed platforms can place them across zones | Less host administration, but you still design images, networking, health checks and stateful services |
| Serverless endpoints | Bursty HTTP workloads and teams that prefer managed operations | Platform scales instances with demand, subject to quotas, concurrency and startup behavior | Minimal server maintenance, but execution limits, cold starts, portability and usage-based billing matter |
Choose based on control and operational capacity, not on a label such as “enterprise.” A dedicated machine can be fast yet still provide poor availability if it is the only origin. A serverless platform can absorb bursts yet require changes for long-running jobs or specialized networking. Managed services reduce routine administration but do not remove the need for capacity planning, security and testing.

How much CPU and RAM should you provision?
There is no responsible universal answer such as “16 CPU cores and 32 GB of RAM.” A process that spends most of its time waiting on a database may need little CPU but substantial connection capacity. Image processing, compression and compilation are CPU-heavy. Large in-memory caches, many concurrent connections and runtime heaps increase RAM requirements.
Start with a representative application instance and measure it under realistic load. Record CPU utilization, memory working set, garbage-collection time, open connections, request latency, error rate and throughput. Then test failure scenarios and a second instance; a configuration that handles traffic only when every instance is healthy has no practical redundancy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStorage sizing includes application files, logs, temporary space, database data, indexes, backups and growth. Put user uploads and other large immutable objects in object storage when possible instead of filling application disks. Select storage performance for the database workload rather than assuming more capacity automatically means more input/output operations per second.
A sizing checklist before you buy anything
- Peak requests per second and the expected duration of a peak
- Concurrent users, active sessions and any long-lived connections
- Dynamic-to-static request ratio and expected CDN cache-hit rate
- Response-size distribution, uploads, downloads and outbound bandwidth
- Database reads, writes, transactions, indexes, replication and consistency needs
- Cacheable objects, cache memory requirements and invalidation frequency
- Background jobs, scheduled work, queues and third-party API calls
- User geography, latency objectives and whether one region is sufficient
- Availability target, recovery-point objective and recovery-time objective
- Expected growth, promotional bursts and capacity lost during maintenance or failure
Load-test the complete path, including CDN behavior, the load balancer, application code, database, cache and queues. Test both warm-cache and cold-cache conditions. Observe saturation points and queueing, not just average response time. Repeat tests after major code, schema or traffic-pattern changes.

Data-tier decisions that limit web-server scaling
Adding application instances does not help if all of them wait on one overloaded database. Use indexes that match real queries, bound connection pools, move expensive work to queues and cache stable reads. Read replicas can separate read traffic from primary writes, while multi-zone configurations improve failover availability. Replicas are not a substitute for a recovery plan: replication can copy accidental deletes or corrupted writes.
Sessions deserve an explicit decision. Stateless signed cookies can avoid server-side session storage for suitable data. Otherwise, store sessions in a shared cache or database so a request can move between instances. Do not rely on local disk or process memory when a load balancer can send the next request elsewhere.

Availability, security and operations
Run application capacity across at least multiple failure domains when uptime matters. Automate health checks, deployment rollback, backups and restoration tests. Monitor request rate, latency percentiles, status-code errors, saturation, cache hits, database connections, replication lag, queue depth and bandwidth.
Terminate HTTPS with a managed certificate or a carefully maintained proxy, restrict administrative access, patch operating systems and dependencies, and apply least-privilege identities between services. A CDN and load balancer can absorb some abuse, but they do not replace application-level authentication, rate limits, input validation or database protection.
A practical selection process
- Classify traffic as static, dynamic HTTP, API, WebSocket, media or a mixture.
- Document peak and burst assumptions, geography, latency goals and availability requirements.
- Separate cacheable delivery, application execution, data storage and background work into tiers.
- Choose a hosting model that matches your team’s need for operating-system control and tolerance for infrastructure administration.
- Build a minimal multi-instance design with health checks before exposing it to production traffic.
- Run end-to-end load tests, then size CPU, memory, storage and bandwidth from observed bottlenecks.
- Add autoscaling, CDN rules, database safeguards, backups and alerts; test failure and recovery paths.
- Review actual utilization and cost after launch and resize or redesign the tier that is limiting performance.
The result may be a static hosting service with a CDN, several containers behind a regional balancer, or a multi-region platform with managed data services. What matters is that each layer can scale and fail independently, and that the design is validated against your measured workload rather than a visitors-per-server rule.
