Sentinel-3 is not just an ocean-colour satellite. Its instruments measure reflected light, sea- and land-surface temperature, active fires, sea-surface height, waves, wind-related quantities and topography over ice and inland water. Those observations are processed into products for ocean forecasting, climate analysis, water-quality work, vegetation monitoring, fire management, sea-ice studies and land-cover applications.
The practical division is simple: OLCI observes colour and reflectance, SLSTR observes surface temperature and fire signals, and SRAL with MWR measures height-related quantities and supplies the atmospheric correction needed by radar altimetry.

What Sentinel-3 measures at a glance
Copernicus Sentinel-3 is a multi-instrument Earth-observation mission operated jointly by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Eumetsat. Its central measurement families are colour and reflectance, surface temperature, and surface topography. The mission systematically observes oceans, land and ice, while its processed data support environmental monitoring, climate work and ocean forecasting.
| Instrument | Physical quantity | How it senses | Key specifications reported by ESA (2026) | Typical products and uses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OLCI (Ocean and Land Colour Instrument) | Reflected light from water and land | 21 spectral bands from 400 to 1020 nm | 300 m spatial resolution; 1270 km swath | Ocean colour, water quality, ecosystem indicators, vegetation, land reflectance, land cover, aerosols and clouds |
| SLSTR (Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer) | Sea- and land-surface temperature; fire radiative signals | Visible, near-infrared, short-wave-infrared and thermal-infrared channels; dual-view along-track scanning | 500 m visible/NIR/SWIR resolution; 1 km thermal-infrared resolution; accuracy better than 0.3 K | Daily global surface-temperature products, active-fire detection and fire radiative power |
| SRAL (Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter), supported by MWR (Microwave Radiometer) | Sea-surface height, waves, surface wind speed and inland or ice topography | Dual-frequency Ku- and C-band radar altimetry; MWR measures atmospheric-column water vapour for correction | Approximately 300 m along-track resolution after SAR processing | Sea level, ocean waves, sea ice, ice sheets, rivers and lakes |
These are different physical observations. A colour product is derived from reflected sunlight, a temperature product from emitted and reflected radiation, and an altimetry product from radar returns and their travel time. They should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.

OLCI: measuring ocean colour and land reflectance
What “ocean colour” means
OLCI records the spectrum of light reflected by the ocean rather than taking an ordinary true-colour photograph. Its 21 bands, covering 400–1020 nm, are selected to distinguish water-leaving signals from atmospheric effects and to support vegetation and land observations as well as marine applications.
Algorithms transform those bands into geophysical products. Depending on the product, the output can describe water colour, suspended material, biological indicators or other properties relevant to water quality and ocean ecosystems. The measurement is therefore spectral reflectance first; an interpretation such as biological productivity is a downstream use of that measurement, not a separate sensor reading.
OLCI’s land contribution
Over land, the same reflected-light observations provide land-reflectance and vegetation products. They can be used for vegetation-state indicators, crop and agriculture management, land-cover mapping and studies of atmospheric aerosols and clouds. The 300 m resolution and 1270 km swath favour broad, repeated coverage rather than the fine detail expected from a high-resolution mapping satellite.

SLSTR: how Sentinel-3 measures surface temperature
Surface temperature is not air temperature
SLSTR measures the temperature of the observed surface: the sea surface, a land surface or a hot fire area. That is different from the air temperature reported by a weather station or weather model. The same instrument supplies both sea-surface-temperature and land-surface-temperature products because it observes thermal radiation from each type of surface.

Resolution, accuracy and coverage
ESA describes SLSTR as providing global sea- and land-surface temperatures every day. Its visible, near-infrared and short-wave-infrared channels have 500 m spatial resolution, while its thermal-infrared channels have 1 km resolution. ESA reports accuracy better than 0.3 K for the surface-temperature measurement. These are instrument specifications, not a promise that every derived pixel has identical uncertainty under every observing condition.
The instrument uses dual-view along-track scanning. Looking at the same scene from two viewing geometries helps the processing chain account for effects that vary with viewing angle and supports consistent surface-temperature retrievals across the globe.
Fire detection and fire radiative power
Two dedicated thermal-infrared channels are optimized for active-fire detection and fire-radiative-power measurement. A fire product is consequently a specialised thermal observation of an energetic hotspot; it is not simply a temperature map with a different colour scale. Fire radiative power is useful for characterising how intensely a fire is releasing energy and for feeding broader fire-monitoring systems.

Over oceans, SRAL products include sea-surface height, wave information and surface wind-speed estimates. Sea-surface height observations are the foundation for many sea-level and ocean-dynamics analyses, but they are produced by a radar-ranging system, not by OLCI’s optical bands.
Why MWR is part of the topography package
Water vapour in the atmosphere changes the apparent travel time of a radar signal. MWR measures atmospheric-column water vapour and supplies the atmospheric correction needed for the altimeter’s performance. In practical terms, SRAL provides the radar range measurement while MWR helps remove a key atmospheric effect from that measurement.
Beyond the open ocean
The topography package also observes sea ice, ice sheets, rivers and lakes. Those observations support products involving sea-ice extent and thickness, ice-sheet topography, and water height in inland channels and reservoirs. The target can be a moving ocean surface, an ice-covered surface or a comparatively narrow inland-water feature, but the underlying measurement remains radar-based range and surface height.
What Sentinel-3 measures over land and ice
“Land data” is a combination of several instrument families, not one output from one land sensor.

This broad view complements, rather than replaces, higher-resolution land observations from Sentinel-2. ESA describes Sentinel-3 as providing a bigger picture, while Sentinel-2 supplies high-resolution land measurements. The distinction is about coverage and spatial detail, not a claim that one mission makes the other unnecessary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Sentinel-3 is used for
Ocean monitoring and forecasting
Ocean-colour products help track water-quality and ecosystem conditions. Surface-temperature products provide a daily global view of sea-surface temperature. Altimetry contributes sea-surface height, waves and wind-related information. Together, these product families feed ocean forecasting and environmental monitoring, even though each starts with a different physical measurement.
Climate and long-term environmental records
Repeated, systematic observations of temperature, reflectance, height and ice conditions can be assembled into records for climate analysis. The value comes from consistent measurements over wide areas and repeated acquisitions, not from any single image.
Agriculture, vegetation and land management
OLCI reflectance and vegetation products support crop-management decisions and broad assessments of vegetation state. Land-cover applications use the spectral information to distinguish surface classes. SLSTR temperature adds a thermal view of the land, while fire products identify active burning and its radiative intensity.
Best Value
Ice and inland-water applications
Sea-ice extent and thickness, ice-sheet topography, and water height in rivers and lakes extend Sentinel-3 beyond a strictly marine mission. These are derived products built from the radar, radiometer and optical observations appropriate to each target.
Measurement versus product: an important distinction
A satellite instrument measures a signal; users normally work with a processed geophysical product. OLCI measures radiance in spectral bands, but a water-quality layer or vegetation index is calculated from those observations. SLSTR detects radiation in visible and thermal channels, but a surface-temperature or fire-radiative-power layer requires calibration and algorithms. SRAL records radar returns, while sea-surface height or inland-water height is produced after orbit, retracking and atmospheric corrections.
This distinction explains why application names such as “ocean productivity,” “land use” or “fire monitoring” should not be described as direct measurements by one instrument. They are interpretations or operational uses of Sentinel-3 observations.

How to obtain and use Sentinel-3 data
- Choose the physical question first. Select an OLCI product for colour or reflectance, an SLSTR product for surface temperature or fire, or an SRAL/MWR product for height, waves, wind-related quantities or water vapour correction.
- Define the area and time. Set a geographic region and acquisition period, then check whether the product’s spatial resolution and revisit context fit the question.
- Use the appropriate processing level. Start with a geophysical product when you need temperature, reflectance, height or another interpreted variable; use lower-level radiance or radar data only when you intend to perform specialist processing.
- Check metadata and quality information. Confirm the instrument, sensing time, resolution, processing version and quality flags before comparing scenes or building a time series.
- Account for latency. ESA says core products are typically available within three hours of sensing. “Typically” is an operational target, not a guarantee for every product or acquisition.
- Access the open data service. ESA states that Sentinel-3 data are free of charge and open to users worldwide, with Copernicus Data Space identified as an access point. Interfaces and operational arrangements can change, so verify the current catalogue and product documentation when downloading.
ESA processes land products and Eumetsat processes marine products within the mission’s operating arrangement. That division can affect catalogue organisation and product documentation even though the observations come from the same Sentinel-3 constellation.
Common interpretation mistakes
- Calling OLCI a normal camera: its 21-band spectral measurements are interpreted into colour and reflectance products; they are not limited to a photographic true-colour view.
- Confusing surface and air temperature: SLSTR’s temperature products describe the observed surface, not the temperature of the air above it.
- Treating all “land data” as one layer: vegetation, temperature, fire and water height come from different instruments and processing chains.
- Comparing radar height with optical resolution: SRAL’s approximately 300 m along-track figure after SAR processing describes radar altimetry, not an OLCI-style image grid.
- Assuming a revisit number is a download guarantee: ESA’s one-day and two-day ocean figures are constellation-context values and do not promise identical coverage, latency or quality for every location.
- Assuming applications are direct measurements: productivity, land use and fire management are derived applications built from instrument observations and products.
Why Sentinel-3 matters
Sentinel-3’s strength is the combination of wide, systematic coverage and complementary sensing methods. OLCI reveals spectral changes in water and land, SLSTR adds surface-temperature and fire information, and SRAL/MWR supplies height and atmospheric-support measurements. The resulting product families let users study oceans, land, ice and inland water within one coordinated Earth-observation mission, while Sentinel-2 can provide finer-resolution land detail where that is required.
