They cannot, by themselves, reliably establish what a structure is for, whether equipment is operational, who is present, or what a facility intends to do. Every image is a record of a particular place at a particular time—not a live view.
What a satellite image can show
An image can document physical features that are large and clear enough to be distinguished under its resolution and collection conditions. Depending on the image, these may include building footprints, roads, runways, cleared areas, earthworks, or visible changes to the site.

That is different from identifying the meaning of a feature. A visible object may resemble a vehicle or piece of equipment, for example, without the image establishing its exact type, owner, condition, or operational role. A new structure or disturbed ground is visible evidence of change; its purpose is an interpretation that may require other evidence.
The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) defines geospatial intelligence, or GEOINT, as “the exploitation and analysis of imagery and geospatial information to describe, assess and visually depict physical features and geographically referenced activities on the Earth.” The distinction matters: imagery is an input to assessment, not an automatic explanation of what is happening. See NGA’s overview of products and services.

How resolution limits visible detail
Spatial resolution describes the ground detail represented by image pixels. It helps determine which features may be distinguishable, but it does not guarantee that every object of a certain size can be identified. Scale, image quality, viewing angle, shadows, haze, processing, and the question being asked also matter.
Zooming in cannot recover detail the original image did not record. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) puts it plainly: “Enlarging an aerial photograph will only make the object bigger; it will not add more detail in the object.” Read the USGS explanation of scale, visibility, and enlargement.

Published resolution figures also describe particular products, not every image or provider. NGA describes its Commercial Imagery Regional Orthos as having 0.5–1 meter resolution; that figure applies to those orthomosaic products, not to commercial satellite imagery as a whole. NGA’s Controlled Imagery page gives details about the product.

Why a sharp-looking image can still be hard to interpret
Apparent sharpness is not the same as reliable, resolvable detail. Several factors can hide a feature, make its edges ambiguous, or change how it appears:
- Collection conditions: Cloud, haze, shadow, and viewing angle can obscure or distort features.
- Image date: An image records conditions when it was acquired. It does not establish what is present before or after that date.
- Spectral bands and display: Different bands and processing methods affect the image’s appearance. Displayed colors may be assigned or enhanced rather than natural color.
- Coverage and product type: A regional orthomosaic, a broad-area collection, and a high-resolution image collected for a particular request serve different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
USGS’s guide to aerial photographs and satellite images explains how images are used to interpret features and compare conditions over time.

How current are satellite images?
Currentness depends on the image’s acquisition date, the provider and product, collection conditions, and whether a suitable image of the site was actually obtained. A provider’s nominal collection capability does not mean a clear image is available for every location on every day. Commercial imagery should not be described as a continuous or live view of a particular base.

What comparisons between dates can establish
Images acquired at different times can help show changes in visible conditions. USGS notes that such comparisons can be used to study change. They are most useful when the images cover the same area and their dates and collection conditions are understood.
A comparison may support a statement such as “a feature appears in the later image but not the earlier one.” It does not, without additional evidence, prove why the feature appeared, when exactly the change occurred, or what the change means operationally. Differences in cloud, shadow, angle, coverage, or processing can also complicate comparisons.
How to evaluate a published claim about a base
Separate observation from inference. A careful account identifies what is directly visible, then explains what is being inferred and how uncertain that interpretation is. For consequential claims, look for independent corroboration rather than treating a single image as conclusive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Find the acquisition date and source. Do not confuse the date an image was collected with the date an analysis or report was published.
- Check resolution and product type. Make sure a specification applies to the image being discussed, not to a different product or service.
- Inspect coverage and conditions. Look for clouds, haze, shadows, viewing angle, and gaps that could affect interpretation.
- Ask what is observed versus inferred. A visible structure or change is not automatically proof of its purpose, occupancy, operational status, or intent.
- Seek corroboration. Independent evidence can help test an interpretation; a single image may leave important questions unresolved.
What public specifications do not tell you
Public commercial imagery figures should not be used to claim what classified military imaging systems can or cannot see. The public sources cited here do not establish the exact specifications or performance of classified systems. Likewise, NGA’s public product information is not a commercial imagery service: NGA says it does not sell or perform services for the public. Commercial imagery offerings are separate, and their specifications and availability can change.
