Its high hardness makes it much less likely to scratch than mineral glass or acrylic, but it can still chip or crack after a hard impact. A mark may also be on an anti-reflective coating rather than the sapphire. What to do depends on the material, the damage, and the exact watch model.
What “sapphire crystal” means on a watch
In watch specifications, “crystal” means the transparent cover over the dial, not the movement component sometimes called a quartz crystal. Sapphire watch crystals are generally synthetic sapphire: crystalline aluminium oxide made for use as a clear, hard component. IWC describes synthetic sapphire as extremely scratch-resistant and reports Mohs hardness 9 for it on its technical details page. TAG Heuer also describes sapphire at Mohs 9 in its 2024 material explainer.

Those figures describe hardness, which is useful for understanding resistance to scratching. They do not mean the crystal is impossible to damage. Rado gives a different hardness figure—2,500 Vickers—in its manufacturer FAQ; Vickers and Mohs are different scales, so the numbers should not be directly equated.

Can sapphire watch glass get scratched or crack?
Scratches
Sapphire resists everyday scratching better than the acrylic and mineral-glass alternatives commonly compared in watch specifications. But “scratch-resistant” is not the same as scratch-proof: damage is possible, and a visible line may be on an anti-reflective coating rather than the sapphire itself.

Some sapphire crystals have anti-reflective coating to reduce reflections. TAG Heuer notes that an external coating can be scratched even while the crystal remains unscratched, and says coatings are preferably placed on the inside. A mark therefore does not, by itself, establish that the sapphire is scratched.
Chips and cracks
Hardness does not equal impact toughness. A sufficiently hard blow can chip or fracture sapphire, despite its resistance to scratching. Rado puts the distinction plainly: “While it is very hard, it is not indestructible.” The same caution applies to mineral glass: TAG Heuer says scratched or chipped tempered mineral must be replaced, but that statement should not be taken as a universal rule for every mineral-glass formulation.
There is no cited independent, standardized head-to-head test that gives a general probability of scratching or breakage for each watch-crystal material. Manufacturer comparisons support the relative scratch-resistance distinction, not a guaranteed outcome for every watch or impact.

Sapphire vs. mineral glass, Hardlex, and acrylic
| Material | Scratch behavior | Impact and repair considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Sapphire | Highest scratch resistance among these commonly compared materials; manufacturers commonly describe it as Mohs 9. | Can chip or fracture under sufficiently hard impact. A coating may mark separately. Damage is generally a model-specific service or replacement question. |
| Mineral glass or strengthened mineral | More scratch-resistant than acrylic, but more susceptible to scratches than sapphire in the cited manufacturer comparisons. | Repair depends on the watch and mineral formulation. TAG Heuer says scratched or chipped tempered mineral must be replaced. |
| Acrylic or plastic | Softer and more likely to scratch. | Light scratches can often be polished. Acrylic is flexible and described as relatively impact-resistant compared with glass alternatives in the cited comparison. |
| Hardlex | Seiko’s name for a hardened mineral glass; it is not a wholly separate base-material category. | Performance should be assessed for the specific watch. The cited sources do not establish a universal ranking for Hardlex. |
When comparing two particular watches, consider more than scratch resistance: impact and chipping risk, reflection and optical clarity, the possibility of coating marks, cost, and whether a repair is likely to involve polishing or replacement. The cited sources do not provide a standardized independent test across brands that settles all of those trade-offs.
How to identify the material and assess a mark
- Find the exact watch reference. Check the model information, manual, or manufacturer product specifications. Timex says the crystal type can be found under “Specs” on each product page.
- Do not test the crystal by scratching it. The cited sources do not validate an improvised scratch test, and attempting one can damage the watch.
- Describe what you can see without assuming the cause. A surface line could be a coating mark, while a chip or crack may involve the crystal. The available guidance does not establish a safe, universal at-home diagnostic for distinguishing them.
- Ask for an inspection if the damage is uncertain or the watch is chipped or cracked. Use the manufacturer’s service network or a qualified watch repairer to identify the damaged part and suitable remedy.
Can you polish a scratch out of a sapphire watch crystal?
Do not assume an acrylic-style polish will fix a sapphire scratch. The cited manufacturer guidance describes acrylic as polishable; it treats damaged sapphire and mineral crystals as replacement or service matters instead. If a mark may be on an anti-reflective coating, have the watch assessed before attempting a remedy: the coating and the crystal are different surfaces, and a general polish recommendation is not established for every model or coating.
For a confirmed chip or crack in sapphire or mineral, seek model-specific service rather than relying on a generic replacement part. A replacement must match the watch reference and the crystal’s dimensions, shape, and profile; coating may matter too. Component makers offer crystals in different shapes and profiles, but there is no universal fit guide. Do not assume a part is compatible solely because it is described as sapphire or looks similar.

When replacement is the practical route
For a cracked or chipped crystal, contact the watchmaker or a qualified repairer and provide the exact reference. Ask them to confirm the correct crystal and whether the repair includes any checks or work needed for the watch’s sealing. The available sources do not establish a universal repair price, turnaround, or guarantee of restored water resistance, so those details need to be confirmed for the individual watch.
