Short answer: Samsung The Frame’s Art Mode is the television’s gallery-like display state when you are not watching regular TV. You can use it to show Samsung’s rotating free Art Store Streams or your own photos without paying for the full catalog. The Art Store membership is an optional service that adds on-demand access to thousands of artworks and some selection features.

This information reflects Samsung’s US pages. Prices, artwork availability, model support and terms can differ by country and change over time, so use the membership screen on your TV for the current offer.

Art Mode and the Art Store are different things

Art Mode is a function of The Frame TV. When you switch away from ordinary TV viewing, the screen can display artwork or personal photos instead of going blank. Samsung says the set adjusts brightness and color tone in response to ambient light, helping the image look more like a framed print in changing room conditions. A motion sensor can wake the display when movement is detected and turn it off when the room is empty. Samsung support also states that Art Mode cannot be permanently disabled, although you can leave Art Mode, change what it displays and adjust related settings.

The Art Store is Samsung’s artwork service inside Art Mode. It supplies a rotating selection at no charge and a larger on-demand library for members. You do not need an Art Store subscription simply to use Art Mode, show your own pictures or receive the free rotating selection.

Samsung’s overview of The Frame describes the TV and its customizable bezels here: Samsung The Frame TVs. Exact Art Mode controls vary by model and software version.

What you get without paying for an Art Store membership

Free Art Store Streams

Samsung’s current US Art Mode page says Art Store Streams delivers 30 curated artworks each month without a paid subscription. A separate Samsung page describes more than 370 free pieces in a year, while The Frame product FAQ says more than 360 different pieces annually. Those figures do not match, and Samsung notes that timing and free-art availability can vary by region and change without notice. Treat Streams as a rotating monthly benefit, not as a guaranteed annual number.

Free Streams are intended for viewers who are happy to let Samsung choose the rotation. They do not provide the same control as browsing the entire catalog and selecting any work on demand.

Your own photos

You can display personal photos in Art Mode without buying the larger catalog. Samsung documents two transfer methods: the SmartThings app and a USB storage device connected to the TV’s One Connect Box. SmartThings can apply effects and create a slideshow. Samsung recommends editing and cropping images before transfer because the TV itself does not edit the files.

Free personal-photo slideshow

Samsung’s service information lists “Display All” for personal photos as free. That is separate from the subscription-only “Display All” option for Art Store artwork. Therefore, a family-photo slideshow does not require an Art Store membership.

What an Art Store membership adds

On-demand selection

A membership opens the broader Art Store catalog, including current and future artwork, according to Samsung support. The company’s US pages describe the collection as thousands of works, but their totals conflict: The Frame FAQ says over 4,000 pieces, while the current Art Mode and Art TV pages say over 5,000. Because Samsung does not present one consistent total, use “thousands of works” as the dependable description and check the catalog shown on your TV.

Membership is useful when you want to search or choose specific art rather than wait for a monthly rotation. Samsung also lists the Art Store’s “Display All” artwork slideshow as a subscriber feature. The exact browsing and slideshow controls can depend on your model, country and current software.

US pricing shown by Samsung

Samsung’s US Art TV FAQ lists the service at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year. The Frame FAQ also confirms the $4.99 monthly price. However, an annual-price image on Samsung’s Art Mode page shows $49.90 instead. These pages were accessed in October 2026 and do not show publication dates, so annual billing should be treated as volatile. Open Art Store on your TV, choose Membership and read the current checkout terms before paying.

How to add your own photos

Method 1: SmartThings

SmartThings requires an internet connection and a Samsung Account. Samsung’s support instructions use these labels:

  1. Add The Frame TV to the SmartThings app and complete device setup.
  2. Open the TV in SmartThings and choose Art Mode.
  3. Select Add Your Photos.
  4. Choose the pictures on your phone, apply any available effect or layout, then select Save on The Frame.

Prepare the files first on your phone or computer. Check orientation, crop and brightness before sending them, since Samsung says the TV does not perform photo editing after import.

  3. Open Art Mode on the TV and enter My Collection.
  4. Choose the connected USB device, select the images and save the ones you want on the TV.

Port arrangement and supported file behavior can differ by model. If the drive does not appear, confirm that it is connected to the One Connect Box and consult the manual for your exact screen size and model year.

How to subscribe on The Frame

Samsung’s documented on-TV path is:

  1. Open Art Store while the TV is in Art Mode.
  2. Choose Membership.
  3. Select Subscribe.
  4. Add or confirm a payment method and review the price, billing interval and local terms shown on screen.

A Samsung Account and Wi-Fi connection are required for Art Store access. If the membership page is missing, first verify that the TV is online and signed in, then check whether the model and country support the service. Samsung’s support guide explains account and connection requirements in How to get artwork for the Samsung Frame TV.

How Art Mode behaves day to day

Art Mode is not simply a static screensaver. Samsung says the TV uses ambient-light information to adjust brightness and color tone. The motion sensor can switch the display on when someone enters and off when no movement is detected, which reduces unnecessary illumination. Sensor behavior, timeout controls and energy settings differ among models, so the menu on your TV is the authority for available options.

Because Samsung says Art Mode cannot be permanently disabled, owners who prefer a completely dark screen should use the TV’s available sleep, screen-off or power settings rather than expecting a permanent Art Mode removal switch. Names and locations of those controls vary by model.

Requirements, regional limits and changing figures

  • Samsung Account: Required for network-based Art Store features and SmartThings control.
  • Internet connection: Wi-Fi is required to access Art Store content; SmartThings also needs an internet connection.
  • Compatible model: Menus, sensors, storage behavior and supported features vary by model, screen size and software version.
  • Country availability: Samsung says artwork, membership terms and availability can differ by country.
  • Volatile catalog and pricing: Samsung’s US pages disagree on annual free-piece totals, total catalog size and annual membership price. Verify the live TV screen instead of relying on an older figure.

For Samsung’s Art Mode feature description and current US artwork information, see The Frame Art Mode page and Samsung Art TV. The product FAQ is available at The Frame TVs.

Troubleshooting common Art Mode problems

The Art Store or membership screen will not load

Check Wi-Fi from the TV’s network settings, confirm that a Samsung Account is signed in and restart the TV. If the service still does not appear, the model or country may not support it, or Samsung may be updating availability.

SmartThings cannot find The Frame

Make sure the phone and TV are connected to the internet, sign in to the same Samsung Account and add the TV again in SmartThings. Update the app and TV software if an update is offered. The exact pairing prompts can vary by app version.

The USB drive is not listed

Reconnect it directly to the One Connect Box, then reopen My Collection in Art Mode. Try another compatible drive and confirm that the photos are stored on the drive and readable on a computer. Model-specific file and port requirements are documented in the TV manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The screen turns off unexpectedly

Review motion-sensor and energy-saving settings. Art Mode is designed to react to movement and ambient conditions, so a dark or empty room can trigger the display to turn off. Sensor options differ by model.

A desired artwork is unavailable

Free Streams are curated and rotate, so a particular work may not be included. Membership provides broader on-demand access, but Samsung’s catalog can change. If a work is not shown in the current catalog, try another title or use a personal image.

Bottom line for US buyers

The Frame’s art experience is usable without a subscription: free Art Store Streams and personal-photo display are the core no-cost options. Pay for Art Store membership only when selecting from Samsung’s larger on-demand catalog or using its subscriber artwork slideshow matters to you. Samsung currently corroborates $4.99 per month in the US, but its annual price and catalog totals are inconsistent across pages; the membership checkout on your particular TV is the most reliable source for current terms.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
