Short answer: a Samsung Galaxy phone has no single switch that removes every advertisement. Samsung Internet can use separately installed content-blocking apps for pages opened in that browser, and Samsung and Chrome both offer controls for pop-ups and redirects. Advertisements embedded in other apps, promotional notifications, and some network-delivered ads require different controls. Private DNS and VPN filters can widen coverage, but their results depend on how each app connects and what the filter can inspect.
What “ad blocking” means on a Galaxy phone
Ads can appear in several technically different places. A browser can hide page elements after loading a filter list; an app can display an advert inside its own interface; an operating system can show a promotional notification; and a network filter can stop a request to a known advertising domain. These are not interchangeable jobs.

| Where the interruption appears | Control that may apply | What remains outside its scope |
|---|---|---|
| Pages opened in Samsung Internet | A third-party content blocker enabled in Samsung Internet | Ads in other browsers or apps |
| Browser pop-ups and redirects | Samsung Internet’s Block pop-ups setting or Chrome’s pop-up and redirect setting | Most in-page advertising and in-app ads |
| Promotional notifications | The app’s notification permission and notification categories | Ads rendered inside the app itself |
| Requests to advertising domains | Private DNS or a VPN-based filter, when traffic uses that path | Ads delivered from the same domain as normal content, and traffic that bypasses the filter |
| Tracking cookies and third-party trackers | Tracking-protection features such as Smart anti-tracking | A guarantee that visible ads disappear |
Samsung describes its browser blockers as apps that prevent ads from appearing while you browse. That wording is important: it describes a browser feature, not a universal Galaxy-wide ad filter.

Samsung Internet does not supply one built-in filter list that automatically covers the entire phone. Instead, the browser exposes an Ad blockers area where compatible third-party apps can be installed and enabled. Samsung’s developer documentation also describes content blocking as being provided by separate apps.

How to enable a blocker
- Open Samsung Internet.
- Open the browser menu, usually the three-line button.
- Choose Ad blockers.
- Select a blocker from the available list and install it from the Galaxy Store when prompted.
- Return to the Ad blockers screen and turn on the blocker’s switch.
Menu names and the list of available blockers can vary by Samsung Internet version and region. If the Ad blockers entry is missing, update the browser and check the Galaxy Store listing for your device and country.
What this can block
- Filter-listed advertising elements on pages loaded in Samsung Internet.
- Some page scripts, banners, or other content identified by the installed filter lists.
- Some browser-based tracking requests, depending on the blocker’s lists and settings.
What it cannot establish
- It does not prove that advertisements in Chrome, games, social apps, streaming apps, or shopping apps are removed.
- It does not necessarily stop promotional notifications generated by another app.
- It cannot guarantee that every ad on every website is hidden; filter lists and website techniques change.
For example, AdGuard Content Blocker is listed as a browser-specific content blocker for Samsung Internet and Yandex Browser. Its store information says it does not affect other apps. AdBlock’s help documentation likewise separates Samsung Browser support from its optional Android network-level filtering. These are vendor descriptions, not a measured blocking rate for every Galaxy model.
Pop-up blocking is narrower than ad blocking
A pop-up is a window, tab, or redirect that opens unexpectedly. Blocking those events can make browsing less disruptive, but it is not the same as removing banners, sponsored results, video ads, or adverts embedded in an app.
Recommended Free Tools
Samsung Internet
- Open Samsung Internet.
- Open the browser menu and tap Settings.
- Open Privacy dashboard.
- Turn on Block pop-ups.
The exact menu placement can change with the app version. This control addresses browser pop-ups and redirects; it does not turn on a system-wide content filter.
Chrome
- Open Chrome.
- Tap the three-dot menu and choose Settings.
- Open Site settings.
- Tap Pop-ups and redirects and leave the control disabled for sites that should not open them.
Chrome also provides Ad privacy controls. Those settings concern advertising measurement and personalization features in Chrome. Samsung’s instructions do not describe them as a universal ad remover or as an extension system that filters every advertisement in mobile Chrome.
Why you still see ads in apps
A browser blocker cannot reach an advert that a game, social network, video service, or utility app draws inside its own screen. The app may receive an advert through its own network code, use a first-party domain for both content and advertising, or show a promotion that is part of the app’s interface rather than a separate web page.

Promotional notifications
If the unwanted message appears in the notification shade, handle it at the app level:
- Press and hold the notification.
- Open Notification settings or Settings for that notification category.
- Disable the promotional category, or disable notifications for the app if you do not need any of them.
Labels differ by One UI version. Disabling notifications stops that delivery channel; it does not remove advertising displayed after you open the app.
Persistent pop-ups outside a browser
Samsung identifies third-party apps as a possible cause of persistent pop-up ads. Review applications installed or updated shortly before the problem began, and inspect their notification permissions. Uninstalling an app is a reasonable diagnostic step when the interruptions stop immediately afterward, but a pop-up symptom alone does not identify every possible cause.
In-app advertising
For ads embedded in an app, look for the app’s own paid, premium, or advertising settings. Some apps offer an ad-free purchase; others do not. A Samsung Internet blocker will not apply to those screens.
Private DNS can filter domains, not every visible ad
Android 9 and later support a user-specified Private DNS provider. A filtering provider can refuse DNS lookups for domains on its lists. If an app asks the resolver for a listed advertising domain and follows the device DNS path, the connection may fail before the advert loads.

Typical setup path
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Search Settings for Private DNS. On Android and One UI releases, it may be under network or connection settings.
- Choose Private DNS provider hostname.
- Enter the hostname supplied by the DNS provider and save.
Use the provider’s exact hostname; a hostname is not the same as a web address. Menu labels and availability vary by Android and One UI release.
What Private DNS can and cannot do
- It can block requests to domains that the resolver lists as advertising or tracking domains.
- It may reduce ads in several apps without installing a browser extension.
- It does not remove a page element that has already been delivered, and it cannot reliably distinguish an advert from normal content when both come from the same domain.
- Apps can customize their DNS behavior or use another connection method, bypassing the device default. Android’s security guidance explicitly warns that applications can do this.
- It is not a guaranteed way to block YouTube, game, or streaming adverts. Whether it works depends on the service’s delivery architecture.
Changing DNS also affects the whole device’s name resolution, so a mistake in the hostname can make sites or apps appear offline. Return the setting to Automatic if ordinary connections stop working, then test again before assuming an app is the cause.
VPN-based filtering covers only traffic that uses the VPN
A filtering VPN places a VPN service between the phone and the internet. The service can inspect or block traffic according to its implementation. This can reach more apps than a browser-only blocker, but it still is not universal.
Android constraints
- Only one VPN service can be active for a user or profile at a time. A work VPN, security VPN, or another filtering app can therefore conflict with the ad-filtering VPN.
- Android VPN settings can allow bypass for selected apps or traffic. A lockdown configuration can instead block non-VPN traffic, but that may break apps that require a direct connection.
- Coverage depends on the filter’s lists, whether traffic is encrypted or otherwise identifiable, and whether an app bypasses the VPN.
Before enabling a filtering VPN, check whether your employer, school, banking app, or existing security product already requires a VPN. If two services compete, Android normally permits only one to hold the active VPN slot.

Why network filtering may miss more ads than a browser blocker
AdBlock’s help documentation explains that network-level blocking cannot distinguish a first-party advert from actual content when both are served by the same domain. A browser blocker can examine page context and hide matching elements after the page is built; a DNS or network filter generally sees requests and destinations instead. The vendor’s explanation is a limitation of the approach, not a promise of a particular failure rate.

Tracking protection is not the same as removing ads
Samsung’s Smart anti-tracking feature is intended to limit cookies and third-party tracking behavior. That can reduce profiling and some tracking requests while leaving visible advertising in place. Conversely, a content blocker may hide an advert without stopping every tracking technique used by the page.
Choose the setting according to the problem:
- Use a browser content blocker when the main issue is advertising on websites opened in Samsung Internet.
- Use pop-up controls when unwanted tabs, windows, or redirects are opening.
- Adjust notification permissions when the interruption arrives as a notification.
- Consider Private DNS or a filtering VPN when you need domain-level filtering across several apps and accept the compatibility limits.
- Use tracking protection when limiting third-party tracking is the goal, even if advertisements remain.
Galaxy ad-blocking options compared
| Method | Reasonable coverage | Main boundary | Setup and conflict considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Internet Block pop-ups | Pop-ups and redirects in Samsung Internet | Does not establish removal of in-page ads or app ads | Built into the browser; menu labels can vary |
| Samsung Internet third-party content blocker | Supported ads and filter-listed content on pages in Samsung Internet | Browser-specific; a separate blocker app is required | Install from the browser’s Ad blockers menu; availability varies by region |
| Chrome pop-up and redirect control | Pop-ups and redirects in Chrome | Not a general mobile ad-blocking extension or system filter | Configured under Chrome’s Site settings |
| Private DNS filtering | Requests to domains blocked by the resolver | Apps may bypass device DNS; no reliable page-element removal | Android 9 or later; an incorrect hostname can disrupt connections |
| VPN-based filter | Traffic routed through the active VPN and covered by its filter | App bypass, filter design, and VPN conflicts limit coverage | Only one Android VPN service can be active per user or profile |
| Notification and app settings | Some promotional notifications or app-originated interruptions | Does not necessarily remove ads inside app content | Review each app’s notification categories and own settings |
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Identify the surface first instead of installing multiple blockers at random.
- Capture where it appears. Note whether the ad is in Samsung Internet, Chrome, another app, a notification, or a pop-up over the home screen.
- Apply the narrow control. Enable Samsung Internet’s Block pop-ups for redirects, Chrome’s pop-up control for Chrome, or the relevant notification category for promotional alerts.
- For Samsung Internet pages, enable one content blocker. Test the same site in a private tab and a normal tab. If only one site is affected, the site or filter list may be responsible.
- Check recently installed apps. If pop-ups continue outside browsers, review apps installed or updated immediately before the symptom and their notification permissions.
- Test network filtering cautiously. If using Private DNS, return to Automatic to see whether connectivity or the ad behavior changes. If using a VPN filter, check Android’s VPN panel for another active service and inspect any per-app bypass setting.
- Restore access when something breaks. Disable the blocker, set Private DNS to Automatic, or disconnect the filtering VPN. Re-enable one change at a time so the incompatible setting is identifiable.
How to choose an approach
Choose Samsung Internet blocking when
- Most browsing happens in Samsung Internet.
- You want page-level filtering with minimal impact on other apps.
- You do not need to filter traffic from games or other browsers.
Choose DNS or VPN filtering when
- You want an attempt at domain-level filtering across multiple apps.
- You understand that first-party advertising, bypass behavior, and encrypted app traffic can defeat it.
- You can avoid conflicts with a work, school, or security VPN.
Use app and notification controls when
- The interruption is clearly generated by one app.
- You need to preserve that app’s normal network access while stopping promotional alerts.
- The app offers its own ad-free or notification settings.
No dependable, owner-attributed percentage describes how many ads a current Galaxy phone blocks. Effectiveness changes with the Galaxy model, One UI and browser versions, filter lists, region, app behavior, and the way each advertiser delivers content. The defensible expectation is targeted reduction on the surface you configure, not total removal everywhere.

Does Samsung Internet block ads in every app?
No. Its content blockers apply to pages loaded in Samsung Internet. They do not establish coverage for Chrome, games, streaming apps, or other third-party applications.
Can Private DNS block YouTube or game ads?
It may block a request when the app uses the device DNS path and the advertising domain is on the resolver’s list. It is not reliable for services that deliver ads from the same domains as content or that use their own DNS behavior.

Why do pop-ups continue after I enabled a Samsung Internet blocker?
The pop-ups may be coming from Chrome, another browser, a third-party app, or a notification. Check the surface first, then apply that surface’s setting instead of assuming the Samsung Internet blocker is system-wide.
Will Smart anti-tracking remove advertisements?
Not necessarily. Smart anti-tracking addresses cookies and third-party tracking behavior. Tracking protection and visible-ad removal are related but separate functions.
Can I run a filtering VPN and another VPN at the same time?
Android allows only one active VPN service per user or profile. A work or security VPN can therefore prevent a separate filtering VPN from being active, unless the product provides a different implementation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there one Galaxy setting that blocks every advertisement?
No. Browser blockers, pop-up controls, notification settings, Private DNS, and VPN filters operate on different surfaces and none establishes universal coverage.
Do I need a paid product to block ads on a Galaxy phone?
The documented Samsung Internet feature uses separately installed third-party blockers, while Android also offers device settings such as Private DNS. Availability, features, and any charges depend on the specific app or provider.
