Spoilers for Critical Role Campaign Four, episode 37, “Death to Tyrants.” Sam Riegel’s Wicander Halovar faces a choice between protecting his own chances of survival and freeing Tyranny from her family’s control. The episode’s reported dilemma makes a striking case for character-first D&D play—not a universal measure of who plays “best.”
Who Sam Riegel plays in Campaign Four
Sam Riegel plays Wicander “Wick” Halovar, a human and scion of the Candescent Creed. Critical Role describes Wicander as someone whose faith and family loyalties are challenged as he uncovers troubling truths about his religion. The official Campaign Four page introduces his character and the campaign’s rotating-table format.

Campaign Four is a West Marches-style Dungeons & Dragons campaign with three rotating tables. Critical Role says it uses the 2024 rules; the campaign explainer states, “However, this time we’ll be playing with 2024 rules!”

Why Wicander is in danger
The immediate setup comes at the end of episode 36, “Spectacle.” In Critical Role’s official recap, assassins attack Wicander during a performance and shout, “Death to the Sundered Houses! Death to tyrants!”
#1 Best Overall
- First major D&D adventure book within Critical Role’s world of Exandria, taking players from levels 3–12
- Multi-continental story that spans the scarred Wastes of Xhorhas, introduces the continent of Marquet, and eventually plunges players into the Netherdeep—a terrifying cross between the Far Realm and the deep ocean
- Bursting with lore and all new art depicting Exandria
- Includes a poster map of Ank’Harel
- Adds magic items, creatures, and introduces rival NPCs
Episode 37, “Death to Tyrants,” continues that attack. A secondary account of the episode reports that Wicander is downed and that Game Master Brennan Lee Mulligan presents Riegel with a series of choices. In that account, Riegel ultimately chooses to free Tyranny from her family’s control rather than prioritize Wicander’s immediate survival.
That episode-specific sequence is reported by the secondary account; the official episode recap available here establishes the cliffhanger, not the details of the subsequent decision. The precise rules mechanics described in that account are not needed to understand the dramatic choice.

Did Sam Riegel sacrifice Wicander to save Tyranny?
The secondary account frames Riegel’s decision as accepting greater danger to Wicander in order to give Tyranny her freedom. That is a useful shorthand for the dramatic trade-off, but it should not be read as a confirmed character death: the reported account describes a high-stakes choice while Wicander is downed, not a definitive outcome that he dies.

A player can know that a tactical choice might improve a character’s odds and still choose the action that best fits the character’s values, loyalties, or understanding of the situation.
What makes this character-first D&D play?
“Character-first” play means letting a character’s motives and beliefs guide a decision, even when a player can see a safer tactical option. It is not the same as ignoring consequences or playing carelessly: the choice matters precisely because it carries risk.
That approach is not a rule for good D&D, nor does it make tactical play inferior. Groups differ in what they find satisfying. Some emphasize survival, planning, and problem-solving; others welcome decisions that deepen relationships or express a character’s convictions. Riegel’s reported choice stands out because it puts Wicander’s priorities ahead of a straightforward survival calculation.
