What Sacrificial Donors Do in Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production—and When They Can Be Avoided

A sacrificial donor is an oxidizable compound added to a photocatalytic reactor to consume photogenerated holes. By replacing the difficult water-oxidation reaction with a faster donor-oxidation reaction, it often increases the measured rate of hydrogen evolution. The trade-off is fundamental: the donor is consumed or transformed, so the experiment is not automatically overall water splitting. A donor-free system must reduce protons to hydrogen and oxidize water to oxygen in the same reaction, with evidence that the hydrogen and oxygen chemistry has the claimed sources.

What a sacrificial donor does after light is absorbed

In a semiconductor photocatalyst, photons with sufficient energy promote electrons from the valence band to the conduction band. The excited electrons can migrate to reduction sites and reduce protons:

2H+ + 2e− → H2

The corresponding holes remain in the valence band. They must be consumed by an oxidation reaction or they will recombine with electrons, wasting the absorbed light. In overall water splitting, those holes oxidize water to oxygen:

Water oxidation is a demanding four-hole process involving several surface intermediates and often slow kinetics. Catalyst band edges may also provide insufficient driving force for one or both half-reactions. A sacrificial donor supplies an alternative hole reaction. Its molecules transfer electrons to photogenerated holes and are then oxidized, while the photogenerated electrons remain available for proton reduction. The donor therefore acts as a fast electron donor (or, in other photocatalytic contexts, acceptor) that can be irreversibly decomposed. This definition and the associated changes in reaction energetics are summarized in the 2023 Nature Reviews Methods Primers article on photocatalytic water splitting.

Common donor classes include alcohols, amines, thiols and related organic reductants. Examples listed in a 2024 experimental protocol include methanol, triethylamine, triethanolamine, cysteine, thiols and ascorbic acid. Each has its own oxidation pathway and products; “sacrificial donor” describes its role in the charge balance, not a single chemical mechanism.

Because the donor is an oxidation substrate, it changes what the reactor is doing and how hydrogen should be credited. A high hydrogen-evolution rate in donor-containing solution demonstrates that the photocatalyst can reduce protons under those conditions. It does not, by itself, demonstrate that water supplied all of the redox equivalents or that oxygen was produced.

Why adding a donor can make hydrogen evolution look much faster

It removes the slow half-reaction

Replacing water oxidation with donor oxidation can lower the kinetic barrier at the catalyst surface. Fewer photogenerated holes are left waiting for a four-electron oxygen-evolution sequence, so electron–hole recombination can decrease and more conduction-band electrons reach hydrogen-evolution sites. The observed hydrogen rate can consequently rise even though the system has become a donor-assisted dehydrogenation reaction rather than complete water splitting.

It changes interfacial chemistry

Donor molecules can adsorb on the photocatalyst, alter surface charge, scavenge reactive intermediates and change the local pH. Their oxidation products may continue reacting, desorb, or bind to the surface. These effects mean that donor concentration, solvent, catalyst loading, light spectrum, reactor geometry and stirring all influence the measured rate. A number reported for one donor formulation cannot be transferred directly to another setup.

The donor can supply hydrogen-bearing equivalents

In some systems, donor oxidation releases protons or other hydrogen-bearing intermediates that ultimately appear in H2. That possibility is why a hydrogen signal alone does not establish water as the hydrogen source. The 2026 Materials Horizons opinion by Rahman and co-authors argues that sacrificial oxidation is fundamentally different from overall water splitting and cautions against extrapolating donor-assisted performance metrics directly to scalable solar-fuel production. This is an attributed sustainability position, not a universally quantified consensus.

Is hydrogen made with methanol really water splitting?

Not necessarily. The precise description is sacrificial-agent-assisted hydrogen evolution unless the experiment demonstrates both water oxidation and the claimed hydrogen provenance. Methanol may be oxidized by photogenerated holes while the catalyst reduces protons. The hydrogen can then include hydrogen-bearing equivalents originating from the donor or from exchange reactions between donor and water.

Overall water splitting has a stricter definition: water is the redox feedstock, hydrogen and oxygen are produced in the expected stoichiometric relationship, and no sacrificial reactant is required to consume one carrier. A donor-containing test can still be scientifically useful. It can reveal whether a material separates charges, whether its reduction sites catalyze H2 formation, and how surface reactions proceed. The label must match what was actually measured.

When photocatalytic hydrogen production can avoid donors

A donor can be omitted when one material or a coupled reaction architecture supports both half-reactions at useful rates. The system needs reduction sites that can produce H2 and oxidation sites that can convert water to O2, while maintaining charge separation and resisting corrosion.

Requirements for overall water splitting

  • Suitable band energetics: the conduction-band electrons must be sufficiently reducing for proton reduction, and valence-band holes sufficiently oxidizing for water oxidation.
  • Charge separation: bulk defects, interfaces, co-catalysts or a tandem architecture must limit electron–hole recombination long enough for both surface reactions.
  • Specialized surface catalysis: hydrogen- and oxygen-evolution sites need to accelerate their respective reactions without causing the products to recombine.
  • Stability: the photocatalyst, co-catalysts and reactor materials must survive illumination, water, dissolved gases and the working pH.
  • Gas analysis: hydrogen and oxygen should be measured independently, with controls that exclude leaks, contamination and gas-phase artifacts.

Reports do exist of donor-free systems. For example, a 2016 Chemical Science paper is titled “Overall water splitting by Pt/g-C3N4 photocatalysts without using sacrificial agents.” The available record establishes that such a system was reported; it does not, by itself, establish broad reproducibility, a particular efficiency, or commercial readiness. The paper can be consulted at the Chemical Science article PDF.

Reviews of photocatalyst design discuss how band alignment, co-catalysts and reaction architecture are combined for water splitting. Useful background is provided by Kudo and Miseki’s Chemical Society Reviews review and the 2024 Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews review.

How researchers determine where the hydrogen comes from

Gas chromatography can show that H2 is present, but it cannot alone identify which reactant supplied its hydrogen atoms. Peng and co-authors’ 2024 protocol recommends isotope experiments that combine labelled water and labelled donor with analysis of H2, HD and D2. A practical sequence is:

  1. Define the competing sources. Identify the water, donor and any solvent or proton-containing additive that could contribute hydrogen.
  2. Run an unlabeled baseline. Measure hydrogen evolution, oxygen or other oxidation products, illumination conditions, catalyst loading, donor concentration and reactor volume.
  3. Replace water with deuterium-labelled water. Analyze the hydrogen isotopologues H2, HD and D2, rather than reporting only total hydrogen.
  4. Label the donor in a separate control. Use a deuterated donor or donor-specific label where chemically appropriate, and analyze the same isotopologues.
  5. Identify donor-oxidation products. Product analysis provides an independent mass balance and helps distinguish donor decomposition from water oxidation.
  6. Check for exchange and scrambling. Proton/deuterium exchange can occur before H2 forms, so an isotope pattern must be interpreted with solvent composition, time and product data.
  7. Measure the oxidation side. Detect O2 when water oxidation is claimed, and quantify relevant donor products when a sacrificial pathway is expected.

A pH change alone does not settle proton provenance. In a specific Pt@TiO2/tetrahydrofuran (THF) case, Peng et al. reported THF-derived dimers and interpreted isotope and product analyses as showing that water initially supplies protons, while THF acts as the formal proton source and water as a proton shuttle. That conclusion is specific to the reported chemistry; it is not a universal mechanism for every donor or photocatalyst. The complete protocol and its controls are described at the 2024 Angewandte Chemie International Edition article.

A useful comparison: donor-assisted evolution versus overall splitting

Question Sacrificial-agent-assisted hydrogen evolution Overall water splitting
What consumes photogenerated holes? An added donor such as an alcohol, amine, thiol or ascorbic acid is oxidized. Water is oxidized to oxygen.
Is the donor consumed? Yes; it is transformed into oxidation products, sometimes through several steps. No sacrificial donor is required as the hole scavenger.
What does a high H2 rate establish? Effective hydrogen evolution under the stated donor and illumination conditions. Potentially complete water redox chemistry, but only when oxygen and source controls support the claim.
What must be reported? Donor identity and concentration, oxidation products, catalyst and light conditions, and controls for hydrogen origin. Both H2 and O2, stoichiometry, stability, gas-analysis controls and isotope or other source evidence where needed.
Can rates be compared directly? No. Match catalyst loading, illumination spectrum and intensity, reactor geometry, donor concentration, stirring, pH and analytical method before comparing numbers.

How to choose and report a donor

Alcohols

Methanol is a frequently used hole scavenger in laboratory tests. Its oxidation products and possible involvement in hydrogen-atom transfer must be measured rather than assumed away. A rate increase after adding methanol is evidence of donor-assisted kinetics, not proof of water splitting.

Amines

Triethylamine and triethanolamine are examples of amine donors. Their oxidation can generate multiple products, and their basicity can change pH and surface charge. Report concentration, solvent composition and product analysis so another laboratory can reproduce the chemical environment.

Thiols and sulfur-containing donors

Thiols and cysteine can transfer electrons rapidly but may form disulfides or other sulfur-containing products and may bind strongly to catalyst surfaces. Surface poisoning or changing adsorption can make an initial rate unstable.

Ascorbic acid

Ascorbic acid is another named donor example. Its acid–base state depends on pH, so the working pH and the actual form present matter when interpreting kinetics and oxidation products.

For every donor, report the chemical name, purity, concentration, solvent, pH, dissolved-gas treatment, illumination, catalyst mass and reaction time. Also state whether the reported hydrogen rate is an initial rate, a time average or a single endpoint value.

Case-specific evidence: the Pt@TiO2/THF example

In the particular experiment discussed by Peng et al., Pt@TiO2 produced almost no detectable hydrogen in pure water over four hours under the authors’ stated irradiation conditions. Adding methanol increased the observed hydrogen-evolution rate. Those observations show how strongly a hole scavenger can alter a measured reaction, but they are not a ranking of methanol against other donors and do not predict performance for other photocatalysts, reactors or light sources.

The same study’s THF experiments illustrate why product and isotope analyses are needed. THF-derived dimers were detected, and the authors used the combined evidence to propose a water/proton-shuttle mechanism rather than treating every hydrogen atom as direct proof of water splitting. Use this result as a mechanistic example, not as a general rule.

Common interpretation errors and how to correct them

  • Calling every H2 signal water splitting: report donor-assisted hydrogen evolution unless water oxidation and source evidence are shown.
  • Ignoring donor products: identify and quantify oxidation products where practical; they are part of the reaction balance.
  • Using only pH as evidence: pH shifts reflect acid–base and redox chemistry but do not identify the hydrogen source.
  • Comparing incompatible rates: normalize experimental conditions before making a performance comparison.
  • Assuming isotope labels are definitive in isolation: account for proton/deuterium exchange and interpret H2, HD and D2 together with donor-product data.
  • Extrapolating donor tests to scale-up: donor consumption, separation, feedstock sustainability and waste products must be addressed before claiming practical solar-fuel relevance.

What a convincing donor-free claim should contain

A strong overall-water-splitting report gives the reader enough information to distinguish a complete redox cycle from a fast reduction half-reaction. Look for simultaneous, independently measured H2 and O2; an approximately appropriate gas ratio under the stated conditions; a complete catalyst and reactor description; light and dark controls; stability over the claimed operating period; and analyses that rule out dissolved-gas contamination or leaks. If the experiment uses an additive, determine whether it is a true mediator or a sacrificial reactant consumed by oxidation.

The most informative studies also trace hydrogen and oxygen sources with isotopic controls, identify oxidation products, and disclose how gas calibration and detection limits were handled. Without those details, a high hydrogen number can still be useful as a materials-screening result, but it should not be presented as proof of practical overall water splitting.

Bottom line

Sacrificial donors make photocatalytic hydrogen evolution easier by accepting photogenerated holes and undergoing oxidation. They are valuable tools for testing charge transfer and hydrogen-evolution sites, but they consume a chemical feedstock and can alter the origin of the hydrogen and the reaction products. Donors can be avoided only when the catalyst architecture itself sustains both proton reduction and water oxidation. The decisive distinction is experimental evidence: measure the oxidation side, identify donor products, and use isotope controls when the source of hydrogen is in question.
