Once you own batteries, adding another compatible tool can be convenient; choosing a different system may mean buying its batteries and charger too. That makes “selling you an ecosystem” a useful way to describe the strategy, not proof that tools no longer matter or that lock-in is each company’s only motive.
What a cordless platform actually includes
A cordless platform is a set of batteries, chargers, and tools designed to work together within a named system. It can make an existing battery useful across multiple compatible tools, but compatibility has boundaries: do not assume a battery from one brand works with another, or that every battery from one brand fits every product it sells.

The practical value is convenience and potential reuse of batteries and chargers you already own. The corresponding trade-off is that a new tool may be most useful when it fits the system you have—or may require additional batteries and charging equipment if it does not.

Where each brand draws its compatibility boundaries
Ryobi: 18V ONE+ is one of several systems
Techtronic Industries Company Limited (TTI), Ryobi’s corporate publisher, says in its 2024 annual report, published March 4, 2025, that Ryobi has three cordless platforms: 18V ONE+, 40V, and USB LITHIUM. The report says ONE+ had 311 interchangeable products running on the same battery in 2024, and describes backward and forward compatibility across the generations covered by the platform. This is a company-reported figure and description, not an independent compatibility test.

Ryobi’s US ONE+ catalog shows batteries, chargers, and product categories including power tools, lights, and outdoor tools. When accessed in 2026, the collection displayed 522 products and its 18V ONE+ filter displayed 519. Those are current page counts, with a different date and potentially different scope or counting method than TTI’s 311-product figure for 2024; they should not be read as a measured increase from 311.
Milwaukee: M12, M18, and MX FUEL are separate systems
Milwaukee’s US batteries and chargers page states that M12 packs work with M12 tools and chargers, M18 packs with M18 tools and chargers, and MX FUEL packs with MX FUEL equipment and chargers. These are distinct compatibility boundaries, not one universal Milwaukee battery system.
Milwaukee Tool Europe’s European M18 overview describes “over 325 solutions” for M18 and “over 400 solutions” across M12 and M18 combined. These are vendor-reported figures on a regional page, not standardized global counts. The page also shows categories beyond conventional power tools, including outdoor power equipment, storage, tool management, and accessories.

DeWalt: 20V MAX and its FLEXVOLT relationship
DeWalt’s US 20V MAX page advertises 300+ products. Its voltage note explains that “20V MAX” is the maximum initial voltage measured without a workload; nominal voltage is 18V. The marketing label and nominal figure describe different voltage conventions, not two different product systems.
DeWalt’s FLEXVOLT ADVANTAGE page says its compatible tools work with 20V MAX and 20V/60V MAX FLEXVOLT batteries. That stated relationship does not mean every battery and tool pairing delivers identical runtime or output; check the specific tool and battery requirements.
Why the ecosystem matters to buyers
Battery compatibility can make a platform more useful over time: a buyer may be able to add a compatible tool without starting from scratch on batteries and charging. This is a reasonable interpretation of how a shared system can encourage repeat purchases. The manufacturers’ product pages and TTI’s report document system breadth and compatibility, but they do not establish that tools have become unimportant, that ecosystem lock-in is the sole business purpose, or that one platform is best.

- Drill/Driver features a 3/8" chuck, 0-650 rpm ideal for consumer DIY projects, 11 position clutch to prevent stripping of screws and damaging work material and an LED work light for increased visibility in tight or dark spaces
- The circular saw's compact design makes it easy to use and reduces fatigue. The 5.5" blade is capable of cutting 2x lumber, and its high torque motor makes it ideal for consumer DIY projects. Adjustments are quick and easy with the tool-free depth of cut and bevel settings for angled cutting.
- Work light features up to 11 hours of runtime
- 2 batteries double the runtime for less down time on larger projects
- Part of the BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Lithium Ion Battery System
Counts also are not directly comparable. Ryobi’s 311 is a 2024 company-reported count of interchangeable ONE+ products; its later US catalog shows dynamic page totals. Milwaukee’s numbers are regional “solutions” claims, and DeWalt’s is a US “products” claim. The labels, dates, regions, and counting methods are not shown to be equivalent. A larger figure by itself says nothing conclusive about a particular tool’s performance, reliability, value, or suitability.
How to choose a platform for the tool you need
- Start with the job. Identify the specific tool and application, then check its specifications against the work you expect it to do. Broad ecosystem counts cannot substitute for the individual tool’s requirements.
- Check the exact system name. Confirm whether the tool belongs to Ryobi 18V ONE+, 40V, or USB LITHIUM; Milwaukee M12, M18, or MX FUEL; or DeWalt 20V MAX and the stated FLEXVOLT relationship.
- Inventory batteries and chargers you own. Verify that each is specified for the tool’s platform. Do not assume cross-brand compatibility, or infer that similarly branded batteries fit every system.
- Look at the categories you will actually use. Check whether the platform includes the relevant tools or equipment—such as outdoor products, lighting, or storage—instead of treating a total product count as a proxy for usefulness.
- Compare the complete setup. If you do not already own compatible batteries and a charger, account for those requirements alongside the tool. The sources here do not establish a universal cost or performance winner.
What the business figures do—and do not—show
TTI reported that its Ryobi business grew 6.4% in local currency during 2024 and identified Home Depot as a North American distribution partner in its annual report. Those are business and distribution details; the report does not attribute that growth to ONE+ battery compatibility. Likewise, platform breadth is evidence that these companies sell connected cordless systems, but it does not prove that the system is the only thing they sell or the only reason customers choose their tools.
