Jagex says it is developing a new RuneScape MMORPG, using “RS4” as a working title. The company says a separate team is building it to sit alongside RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, and that the project does not change its focus, commitment or resources for those existing games. That is Jagex’s stated plan—not a guarantee about future execution. The reveal confirms no release date, final name, platforms, gameplay details, account links or monetization model.
What Jagex revealed about RS4
At the close of its RuneFest livestream on 3 October 2026, Jagex announced that work is underway on a new RuneScape MMORPG. Its community announcement calls the project “RS4! (working title),” so RS4 is not yet a confirmed final name. Jagex says the project is early enough that many questions cannot yet be answered.

Does RS4 mean RS3 or OSRS is being replaced?
Jagex says the new MMO is being developed by a separate team and is intended “to live alongside our existing MMOs.” It also says, “There’s no change in focus, commitment or resources we’re putting into RS & OS to support this.” That is the clearest answer available to players worried that the announcement signals an immediate shift away from the existing games: Jagex says it does not. The statement describes the company’s current plan; it cannot guarantee how priorities or delivery may develop over time.
The announcement fits Jagex’s broader January 2026 RS25 framing of expanding the RuneScape franchise across multiple games and experiences. Jagex reported more than 300 million player accounts across the franchise, a cumulative account figure—not a count of active players, unique people or prospective RS4 players. Jagex’s RS25 announcement and company news provide that wider context, but do not amount to an RS4 roadmap.

- Grab your capes and party hats, because we’re going to Gielinor!
- Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.
What the announcement means for Old School RuneScape
OSRS remains a distinct game with its own identity and plans. Jagex says it launched in 2013 from a 2007 snapshot after community demand brought the game back, and that players vote on major changes. Its 2026 roadmap includes new Sailing content, a Grandmaster quest, a new raid and a returning League. These commitments show that OSRS has a separate active plan; they do not establish that RS4 will use OSRS’s voting system or design approach.

What it means for RuneScape, often called RS3
RuneScape also has a separate 2026 rejuvenation plan. Jagex has listed UI and visual-integrity updates, combat modernisation, rebalancing and other systems changes. It has also said Treasure Hunter would be removed following a 2025 community vote. Those are RuneScape roadmap details, not confirmed RS4 features.

What is still unknown about RS4
Jagex has not confirmed the details below in its reveal announcement. Until it publishes more, treat claims about them as speculation:
- Launch timing: no release date or launch window was given.
- Name: RS4 is explicitly a working title; the final name is unknown.
- Platforms: no platform plan was announced.
- Gameplay and presentation: no combat system, mechanics, graphics or other design details were specified.
- Accounts, progress and membership: the post does not say whether RS4 will share or connect accounts, progression or membership with RuneScape or OSRS.
- Monetization: no payment or monetization model was described.
It is therefore too early to conclude that RS4 will inherit either existing game’s systems, share player accounts, or replace one of the current MMOs.
