On an NFL Game Status Report, Out means the player will not play in the specific game covered by that report. It describes expected availability for that game—not the injury’s severity, a diagnosis, or when the player might return.
What does “Out” mean?
The NFL defines the status as “Out – Will not play.” The Game Status Report is intended to give clubs and the public an accurate description of a player’s anticipated availability for the club’s next game. NFL injury-report policy describes the designation in game-specific terms.

So if a player is listed as Out for Sunday’s game, the report says he will not play in that game. It does not establish how many games he will miss or when he will be available again.
How Out differs from Questionable and Doubtful
| Game status | NFL policy meaning |
|---|---|
| Out | Will not play. |
| Doubtful | Unlikely to play. |
| Questionable | Uncertain if the player will play. |
The policy defines these as availability descriptions, not numerical probability ranges. Don’t read a percentage—or a ranking of injury severity—into the label.

Game status is not practice participation
Practice reports use separate participation categories: did not participate, limited participation, or full participation. The NFL removed “Out” from the practice-report categories to avoid confusion with the Game Status Report. A player can therefore have a practice entry during the week and a separate game-status designation for the upcoming matchup.
Check the game and the latest update
Game-status filing deadlines vary with the scheduled day of the game, and a changed player condition must be reported after the initial status filing. For the 2026 season, the NFL’s important dates calendar sets a 4:00 p.m. New York time deadline on a day tied to the game schedule. That calendar is season-specific; check the latest official club or league report for the matchup you’re following.
- Confirm which game the designation covers.
- Check the timestamp and whether a later update has been issued.
- Keep practice participation separate from game status.
Can a player be Out for a reason other than injury?
Yes. NFL policy requires a player who will not play to be reported whether the reason is injury-related or not. When a player’s availability is in question for a non-injury reason, the report identifies the matter as “Not Injury Related.”
