Roman perfumes were usually scented oils or ointments: an oil base blended with fragrant plants and other aromatics, rather than the alcohol-based sprays common today. Recipes varied by ingredients, place, and period. Romans used these scents in personal grooming, including after bathing, and perfume also had a place in honors for the dead.
What were Roman perfumes made from?
Pliny the Elder describes two main ingredients: a liquid oil base and fragrant substances. He also discusses colouring materials, salt to help preserve an oil’s properties, and gum or resin to help a fragrance last. His account records practices and recipes known to him; it does not establish one standard formula used throughout the Roman world.

As Pliny puts it in the Bostock and Riley translation of Natural History, Book XIII: “There are two elements which enter into the composition of unguents, the juices and the solid parts.” In this context, “unguent” refers to a scented oil or ointment, not necessarily a modern-style perfume spray.
Flowers, herbs, spices, and resins
Pliny describes rose perfumes made with blossoms and oil, as well as more elaborate blends involving calamus, honey, wine, saffron, or colouring materials. He also names myrtle, cypress, marjoram, lily, myrrh, cinnamon, and nard among the aromatics used in perfumes. The University of Colorado Boulder’s Classics catalogue likewise highlights roses, saffron, and marjoram, summarizing Pliny rather than providing an independent survey of Roman consumption.

Formulas were associated with different places, including Mendes, Cyprus, Cos, and Cilicia. Ingredients and reputations changed over time and by region, so a named recipe should be understood as one example, not a recipe shared by every Roman household.
Some perfumes were costly
Pliny reports that cinnamon unguent cost 35 to 300 denarii per pound. That is an ancient price range in his account, not a modern valuation, and it should not be converted into present-day currency without separate evidence.

How did Romans use perfume?
Scented oils and ointments were applied to the body as part of grooming. The University of Colorado Boulder’s catalogue describes an unguentarium as a container for scented oil, perfume, or body lotion used by men and women, applied on waking and again after bathing. These descriptions show that perfume was part of personal care, but they do not tell us how often every person used it.

What unguentaria can—and cannot—tell us
Unguentaria were small vessels used to hold and transport perfume oils, but the shape alone cannot prove what a particular vessel contained. The Acropolis Museum’s record for a first-century CE clay unguentarium notes that such vessels could also hold other liquids and solids, including honey, mastic, and spices. Archaeological containers therefore provide evidence about storage and transport, not a guaranteed identification of their contents.

Personal grooming, funerals, and social meaning
Pliny says perfume had become part of Roman life and that its use had entered honors for the dead. A University of Queensland museum exhibition discusses perfume and cosmetics across social classes while noting that surviving Roman authors often tell us more about practices they criticized than about ordinary routines. Elite complaints should not be treated as neutral proof of what all Romans did.
Pliny’s moral judgment makes that tension clear. As quoted by the RD Milns Antiquities Museum, he wrote: “Perfume is a luxury item of the most superfluous type: for pearls and jewels nevertheless are passed on to an heir, and clothes last for some time, but perfumes lose their scent immediately and decay within the same hour they are applied.” The passage is a critique of luxury, not a straightforward account of how widely perfume was used.

What the evidence can establish
Pliny is the most detailed source here for ingredients and recipes, while museum records help explain the vessels associated with scented products. Those forms of evidence answer different questions: literary recipes describe what an author said went into perfumes; vessel records show what containers could hold. They do not establish a single recipe or the contents of every surviving vessel.
