What has Musk said about TSMC and Terafab?
Earlier in the week, Musk acknowledged discussions with TSMC about Terafab. On October 7, 2026, he clarified in a post quoted by Reuters: “No, we will build and run the fab. Let there be ZERO doubt about that.” In a follow-up post, he added: “Maybe TSMC subleases part of the Terafab if they want, but nothing more than that.”

The distinction matters: a possible sublease is not the same as a partnership to build or operate the facility, and the reporting does not establish that TSMC has agreed to either arrangement.

Can the headline’s op-ed warning be verified?

The headline’s characterization should not be treated as an established account of Taiwanese opinion.

What is the relevant Taiwan-China context?
In 2022, Musk proposed that Taiwan and China “figure out a special administrative zone for Taiwan that is reasonably palatable.” The Guardian reported that Taiwanese officials and politicians criticized the proposal. Hsiao Bi-khim, then Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to the United States, said: “Any lasting proposal for our future must be determined peacefully, free from coercion, and respectful of the democratic wishes of the people of Taiwan.”
