It was described by the hospital as North America’s first fully digital hospital—not a hospital run autonomously by robots. The machines handled defined jobs such as moving supplies, while staff remained responsible for care and clinical decisions.
What opened in Toronto in 2015?
The opening-era story concerned Humber River Hospital’s new Wilson site. In its 2016 annual report, Board Chair Paul D. Allison described it as “North America’s first fully digital hospital, opened for patient care on October 18, 2015.” That is the hospital’s own characterization; it is not an independently adjudicated ranking of every hospital in North America. The phrase “robot operated” came from a 2015 media headline. It can give the wrong impression: the evidence supports a digitally integrated hospital using automation for particular tasks, not a facility whose operations or clinical decisions were controlled by autonomous robots. Futurism’s October 2015 report
What did the robots and automation do?
Move supplies around the hospital
Humber’s 2015 community report says its Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) arrived, were programmed, and tested ahead of the opening. A computer-simulated delivery schedule coordinated 238 custom-built carts carrying food, linens, medication, and general supplies. These were logistics vehicles moving carts—not machines making treatment decisions. Humber River Hospital’s 2015 Community Report

Futurism’s 2015 article also described robots assisting with radiology X-ray procedures and chemotherapy preparation and monitoring. It reported that medication packages were checked and scanned through an information management system. Those details belong to that contemporary account; they should not be read as evidence that robots independently diagnosed patients, prescribed medication, or administered care without staff oversight. Futurism’s report
How did Humber’s automation evolve?
Later institutional accounts describe a broader set of digital and automated systems, with distinct roles:
- Laboratory and medication workflows: Humber’s 2023/24 Quality Improvement Plan narrative describes automated laboratory services and robotics used to sort, mix, and deliver medications. It places these alongside electronic health records, computerized physician order entry, bedside computer terminals, and patient-tracking systems. - Hospital logistics: In an anniversary account dated October 18, 2024, Humber River Health said ten AGVs were operating at its facility. The account describes the vehicles in the context of hospital operations, not as surgical robots. Humber River Health’s 2024 anniversary account
- Surgery: That same 2024 account identifies da Vinci and ROSA surgical robots in Humber’s surgery program. These are a different category of system from AGVs: they are associated with surgery rather than supply-cart transport.
In an April 10, 2026 announcement, Humber River Health said its Wilson site would be renamed Hennick Humber Hospital. The release continued to describe it as North America’s first fully digital hospital and listed automated laboratory services, medication robotics, an electronic medical record, and a Command Centre among its digital infrastructure. The 2015 opening story is correctly attributed to Humber River Hospital; Hennick Humber Hospital is the later name for the Wilson site. Humber River Health’s April 2026 announcement

Humber’s own reports support its claim that the Wilson site was North America’s first fully digital hospital. The cited records do not establish that it was the first North American hospital to use robots, nor that it was fully robot-operated. Those are broader claims than the sources substantiate.
The available figures describe equipment and operations, not demonstrated patient outcomes. The 238 carts are an opening-era logistics figure from Humber’s 2015 report; ten AGVs is the count Humber reported operating in its 2024 anniversary account. The cited materials do not quantify how the robots affected error rates, costs, length of stay, or staff workload. A meaningful comparison with another hospital would need to specify the technology’s function, how staff control it, and the date and scope of the evidence.
