System-wide indicators can look adequate while risks vary sharply by bank.
Why system-wide figures do not settle the question
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said that Chinese banks’ capital and liquidity appear adequate overall, while financial-stability risks remain elevated. Those statements describe the system, not the safety of a particular bank or stock. The IMF also distinguishes large state-owned banks from mid-sized and smaller banks, which it says face greater credit-quality concerns, less diversified funding and weaker profitability.

The latest banking ratios cited in the IMF’s January 2026 Article IV report cover 2025 Q3: commercial banks’ non-performing-loan (NPL) ratio was 1.5 percent and their special-mention-loan ratio was 2.2 percent. These are aggregate system measures for that reporting period, not current figures for every bank. The IMF also reported that loss loans—loans for which principal and interest cannot be recovered—were about 40 percent of NPLs. None of these measures, on its own, predicts an individual bank’s future losses.
Credit exposure to property, LGFVs and other borrowers
The property-sector correction and the debt overhang of LGFVs are material vulnerabilities identified by the IMF. Stress can affect a bank through loans to developers, households exposed to weak property markets, local-government-related entities and businesses that depend on local demand or financing. LGFVs’ debt-servicing capacity is a particular concern. Government measures, including a local-government debt swap, have mitigated some risks, but do not make the underlying exposures disappear.

The IMF has also highlighted the steep rise in SME lending in recent years and pressure in some retail, credit-card, micro- and small-enterprise portfolios. Exposure is not the same as a recognized loss: do not assume every loan to a property company, local-government entity or smaller business is impaired. Instead, examine how much the bank has lent to those borrowers, the borrowers’ capacity to service debt, and how the portfolio might respond to weaker conditions.
Whether reported problem-loan figures reveal losses promptly
An NPL ratio is only one view of credit quality. The IMF says bad-asset disposal helped offset new NPL inflows and warns that expanded forbearance may veil underlying asset quality or delay loss recognition. Its 2025 Financial System Stability Assessment also discusses disclosure weaknesses and opacity around NPL inflows and loss-deferral practices. These are reasons to scrutinize reporting, not evidence that a specific bank has concealed losses.

When comparing a bank’s disclosures over time, read the indicators together and note the reporting period and definitions used:
- NPLs and special-mention loans: Look for changes in both categories, not only the headline NPL ratio.
- Write-offs and disposals: Check whether declining reported NPLs coincide with assets being written off or sold.
- Provisions and coverage: Consider the reserves set aside against problem loans and how they compare with disclosed exposures.
- Restructured loans and loss loans: Review whether borrowers have received concessions and how much of the problem-loan book is classified as unrecoverable.
- Portfolio detail: Look for bank-specific information on property, LGFV, SME and other concentrated exposures.
Earnings, capital and funding resilience
Lower lending rates and weak credit demand can put pressure on bank earnings. The IMF says lending rates fell more than funding costs in the period it assessed, contributing to pressure on profitability. If returns weaken, a bank may generate less capital internally and have less capacity to absorb losses. The IMF reports stronger pressure at regional banks with more concentrated business models and competition for deposits and loans.

In addition, it can be used as a unique decoration or a thoughtful gift for those who appreciate philosophy and spirituality.
- Note: Chinese Ancestor Money is not legal tender issued by any bank or government agency and has no cash value. They are usually burnt to dedicate to the ancestors and to pray for blessings of prosperity and good luck. Safety is always a priority when burning ancestral money. Burn in a well-ventilated area, preferably in a metal container, and make sure the embers are completely extinguished when you are finished. Never leave the burning process unattended
For each bank, compare net interest margin, return on assets and the mix of earnings alongside capital composition and funding sources. A system-wide finding of adequate capital does not establish that an individual bank has the same quality or cushion of capital. Similarly, a diversified funding base at one bank does not remove the funding-concentration risk identified for some smaller institutions.
Risks tied to the issuer, share class and trading route
A Chinese bank’s shares should be assessed as the specific security you would own—not as an interchangeable claim regardless of venue or route. A-shares, H-shares and other instruments can differ in trading access, currency, disclosure and applicable investor protections. Check the bank’s own filings and the terms of the security through your broker.

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) describes Stock Connect as access to selected eligible A-shares and ETFs, not every mainland-listed security. Eligibility, participant rules, quota arrangements, settlement conditions and permitted trading activity can matter; verify the current status of the particular security and your access route.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) identifies legal and regulatory uncertainty, government influence, differences in governance and reporting, currency-conversion and capital-transfer constraints, and difficulties pursuing claims against China-based issuers as matters investors may need to consider. These are broad issuer-related risks, not proof that every one applies identically to every listed bank. The SEC guidance also discusses variable-interest-entity structures in other contexts; do not assume a particular bank share uses such a structure without issuer-specific evidence.

U.S. audit-related trading risk
For a U.S.-traded security, check the issuer’s current status under the Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act (HFCAA). Investor.gov describes a process under which a company identified for two consecutive years can face a U.S. trading prohibition. Its bulletin stated that the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) could inspect and investigate completely PCAOB-registered firms headquartered in mainland China and Hong Kong as of that bulletin’s publication. This status can change, so consult the latest PCAOB determination and SEC Commission-identified issuer list before drawing a conclusion about a specific security.
A consistent framework for comparing banks
Use the same reporting period and definitions when comparing potential investments. A side-by-side review can help distinguish a bank’s own exposures from system-level concerns:
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Borrower and sector exposure | How concentrated are property, LGFV, SME, retail or regional exposures, and what does the bank disclose about borrowers’ ability to repay? |
| Problem-loan measures | How do NPLs, special-mention loans, write-offs, provisions, restructured loans and loss loans change over the same periods? |
| Earnings | What are the net interest margin, return on assets and sources of earnings, and how do they compare across periods? |
| Capital and funding | What is the composition of capital, and how diversified are funding sources and deposit relationships? |
| Ownership, governance and disclosure | What do issuer disclosures establish about governance, ownership, reporting practices and the risks relevant to this bank? |
| Security and access | Which share class and listing venue are involved, what currency and investor protections apply, and is the security accessible through the intended broker route? |
The IMF’s system-level data and assessments are useful context, but they do not provide a current valuation, dividend yield or buy-or-sell conclusion for a named bank. Those judgments require issuer- and security-specific information in addition to the risk checks above.
