What can core-level spectroscopy tell us about quantum materials? It provides element-specific evidence about local chemistry, bonding and structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is especially useful for chemical states and surfaces or interfaces, while X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) probes transitions into unoccupied states and can reveal local electronic structure and neighboring-atom arrangements. The result is not a universal “fingerprint” that labels a material automatically: core-hole effects, sampling depth and several possible structure–spectrum relationships must be considered.
The most reliable conclusions identify the measured core level or absorption edge, separate observation from interpretation, and test assignments with calculations or complementary measurements.

What information is element-specific?
Every core-level technique selects a particular atomic species and shell. That selectivity makes questions that are difficult in a complicated compound more manageable: researchers can ask how titanium differs from oxygen, or whether sulfur atoms at an interface experience a changed chemical environment, instead of interpreting one signal averaged over the entire sample.

Measured quantities versus inferred properties
An instrument records an electron kinetic-energy distribution or an absorption coefficient as a function of photon energy. Oxidation state, coordination number, symmetry, charge transfer and correlated behavior are interpretations of those observables. A defensible report states which part was measured, which model was used and what independent evidence supports the assignment.
How XPS reveals chemical and electronic states
In XPS, an X-ray ejects an electron. Its measured kinetic energy is converted to a core-level binding energy. The position, width, asymmetry and multiplet structure of the resulting line respond to the atom’s chemical and electronic environment.
What a binding-energy shift can mean
A shift can be consistent with a different valence or local electrostatic potential, but it is not proof of oxidation state or charge transfer by itself. Orbital identity, screening, many-body interactions and the final state left behind after photoemission can all move or reshape a peak. In strongly correlated materials, chemical shifts and multiplet splitting often need calculations or reference compounds for a credible assignment.

Why peak shape matters
Two samples with similar peak positions can have different line shapes because of satellites, multiplets, asymmetric screening or more than one chemical environment. Conversely, a single broad feature may combine several sites. Fitting a convenient number of peaks without a physical model can turn an underdetermined spectrum into an overconfident chemical formula.
Surface sensitivity and buried interfaces
Conventional XPS preferentially samples the near-surface region. That is an advantage for oxidation, adsorbates and surface reactions, but it can obscure a bulk property or a buried interface. Hard-X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) uses higher-energy photons for more bulk-like information. Standing-wave methods can vary the depth from which electrons are collected and are useful for designed multilayers and heterostructures. These configurations generally require specialized sources and carefully prepared samples rather than a routine benchtop setup.

Sample charging, the energy-reference choice, emission geometry and effective sampling depth should be reported whenever binding energies are compared. A shift caused by charging or a changed measurement geometry is not evidence for a changed valence.
How X-ray absorption spectroscopy probes unoccupied states and local structure
In XAS, an incident photon promotes a core electron into an unoccupied state. Edges are commonly named K, L or M according to the initial shell. The spectrum therefore complements photoemission: XPS primarily detects electrons originating in occupied states, whereas XAS interrogates transitions into empty states, together with the scattering information generated by the excited electron.

X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) covers the intense region near an absorption edge; one cited study uses roughly 50 eV above the edge as a practical description. The boundary is a convention, not a universal sharp cutoff. Near-edge features can reflect electronic transitions, local symmetry, coordination and oxidation state, but the relationship depends on the absorbing element and material family.
Pre-edge intensity, edge position and near-edge shape can carry complementary clues. For example, a change in local symmetry may alter transition probabilities while a change in valence can move spectral weight. Those clues are strongest when compared with standards or first-principles calculations made for the same chemical system.
EXAFS: neighboring atoms and distances
Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) uses the higher-energy oscillations produced when the outgoing photoelectron scatters from neighboring atoms. Analysis can estimate radial distributions, coordination numbers and bond distances, often beginning with the first coordination shell and extending farther when data quality and modeling permit. EXAFS is therefore more directly structural than a simple edge-position comparison, although disorder, multiple scattering and correlated fitting parameters still require care.

XPS and XAS answer different questions
| Question | XPS or photoelectron approach | XAS approach |
|---|---|---|
| Which states are sampled? | Electrons emitted from occupied initial states | Core electrons excited into unoccupied states |
| Typical chemical information | Core-level binding energy, chemical shifts, multiplets and line shapes | Edge and near-edge features linked to local electronic structure |
| Typical structural information | Local chemical environment; depth-sensitive variants can map interfaces | XANES local symmetry and coordination clues; EXAFS radial neighbor information |
| Depth emphasis | Conventional XPS is surface-sensitive; HAXPES and standing-wave methods reach more deeply | Depends on detection mode and energy; bulk-sensitive transmission or fluorescence measurements are common |
| Main interpretive risk | Assigning a peak shift to oxidation or charge transfer without accounting for final-state and electrostatic effects | Treating an edge shape or position as a universal oxidation-state scale or unique structure |
| Experimental requirements | Vacuum-compatible samples and reliable energy referencing; specialized depth methods need advanced sources | Appropriate edge energy, detector geometry and, for some experiments, synchrotron radiation |
The core hole changes the spectrum
Creating a core hole is not a passive way of “looking” at an atom. The positively charged hole interacts with the excited electron and with the surrounding electrons. Excitons, shake processes, charge transfer and screening can redistribute intensity or create additional features.

“The electron-core-hole interaction is critical for proper interpretation of core-level spectroscopies commonly used as structural tools in materials’ science.”
Eric L. Shirley, Joseph Woicik, Conan Weiland, James M. Ablett, Abdul K. Rumaiz, Michael T. Brumbach, Joshua J. Kas and John J. Rehr, authors of a 2021 Physical Review B study, as reproduced in the NIST publication abstract.
The practical consequence is that a ground-state picture alone may not reproduce a measured line. Final-state calculations, multiplet models or explicit core-hole treatments can be necessary. A resonant Auger experiment, for example, can separate exciton, shake and charge-transfer processes associated with core-hole creation more clearly than a single static spectrum.
Why one spectrum may support several structures
Inferring structure from XANES or a fitted XPS line is an inverse problem. Distinct atomic arrangements can produce similar spectral features, and an empirical descriptor that works for one transition-metal family can fail for another. Oxidation, coordination, covalency and symmetry may change together, making a single peak or edge position insufficient to identify the cause.

Interpretation should therefore be phrased as a model-supported assignment: “consistent with” a local geometry under stated assumptions, rather than “proves” that geometry. Calculated spectra, reference materials and an independent structural probe reduce the set of plausible explanations.
A practical workflow for quantum-materials studies
- Define the physical question. Decide whether the priority is surface chemistry, a buried interface, occupied states, unoccupied states, local bond lengths or a combination.
- Select the element and edge. Choose the core level or K, L or M edge that directly involves the atom whose environment is changing. Record the edge energy, sample composition and expected concentration.
- Choose depth and geometry deliberately. Use conventional XPS for near-surface chemistry, HAXPES or standing-wave methods for more bulk-like or depth-resolved questions, and an XAS detection mode appropriate to the sample thickness and element abundance.
- Establish references and controls. Measure a chemically relevant standard or an unchanged region when possible. Document photon energy, analyzer settings, incidence and emission angles, polarization, temperature, atmosphere and charging behavior.
- Separate observation from fit. Report raw or minimally processed spectra, then state the background, line shape, multiplet or EXAFS model used. Avoid adding components solely because they improve a numerical residual.
- Include the core-hole and many-body physics. Use calculations or established multiplet and screening models when final-state effects can alter the line shape.
- Test non-uniqueness. Compare alternative valence, coordination and symmetry models. Identify which features discriminate between them and which do not.
- Corroborate the conclusion. Combine XPS and XAS when occupied and unoccupied information are both needed, and add diffraction, microscopy, transport, magnetism or another appropriate probe for the structural or functional claim.
What combined measurements can resolve
XPS can reveal whether chemically distinct sites exist at a surface or interface, while XAS can show how the same element’s empty-state transitions and neighboring atoms change. Agreement between a core-level shift, a XANES feature and an EXAFS-derived bond-length change is more persuasive than any one indicator. Disagreement is also useful: it can signal depth inhomogeneity, different final-state effects or a model that assigns the wrong origin to a peak.
Photoelectron methods can be extended to resolve angle, spin, time or depth. Resonant photoemission enhances selected electronic states by tuning the photon energy near an absorption edge. Such measurements can expose information hidden in a conventional core-level scan, but they require careful interpretation and, in many cases, synchrotron access.

SrTiO3 and MoS2
A NIST-indexed 2021 study compared experiment and first-principles work on SrTiO3 and MoS2. Its discussion of resonant Auger spectroscopy demonstrates how exciton, shake and charge-transfer processes can be associated with creating a core hole. These materials are examples of what combined spectroscopy and theory can distinguish, not templates for assigning the same feature in every oxide or dichalcogenide.
A large simulated XANES set
A 2023 Physical Review Materials study demonstrated structure–spectrum analysis using more than 50,000 individual simulated cation spectra. The set covered eight 3d transition-metal oxide families from titanium through copper. That number describes a simulated dataset for the study; it is not a count of measured spectra across quantum materials. The example shows why broad training data and explicit validation are valuable, while also underscoring that a model can fail when applied outside the chemical systems represented in its training set.

Common interpretation mistakes and fixes
- “A higher binding energy proves a higher oxidation state.” Check charging, local electrostatic potential, screening, orbital identity and reference calibration before making that assignment.
- “The edge position is a universal valence ruler.” Validate the relationship for the absorbing element and material family; near-edge shape and covalency can shift the apparent position.
- “A surface spectrum represents the bulk.” Compare sampling depth with the thickness of the altered layer. Use HAXPES, standing-wave or bulk-sensitive XAS when the question concerns a buried region.
- “The best numerical fit is the correct structure.” Test alternative models and report parameter correlations and uncertainty. Similar spectra can arise from different structures.
- “A conventional XPS scan contains every electronic property.” Ordinary XPS does not automatically provide angle-, spin-, time- or depth-resolved information; those require dedicated variants and experimental designs.
- “A calculated spectrum is a measurement.” Label calculated, measured and inferred results separately, including the core-hole treatment used in the calculation.

Wiley’s An Introduction to Surface Analysis by XPS and AES, 2nd Edition, covers XPS and Auger principles, sample handling and preparation, depth profiling and materials-science applications. Frequently Asked Questions
Can XPS alone determine the oxidation state in a quantum material?
Usually not conclusively. A calibrated binding energy and line shape can support an oxidation-state assignment, but final-state effects, charging, electrostatic potential and mixed chemical environments must be considered and, where possible, checked against standards or complementary measurements.
When is EXAFS preferable to XANES?
Use EXAFS when neighbor distances, coordination numbers or radial distributions are the primary target. Use XANES when near-edge electronic transitions, local symmetry or coordination-dependent features are more informative; many studies use both regions.

Why might a buried interface require HAXPES or a standing-wave measurement?
Conventional XPS emphasizes the surface and may not reach the interface with enough relative signal. Higher-energy photoemission or a standing-wave field can alter the effective depth sensitivity, but these approaches require specialized instrumentation and sample designs.
What does a core-hole calculation add?
It models the interaction between the newly created core hole, the excited electron and the surrounding electrons. That interaction can produce excitons, shake features and charge-transfer signatures that a ground-state calculation may miss.
