Rare earth elements (REEs) are used mainly because they provide unusually useful magnetic, optical and catalytic properties. The most visible clean-energy application is the permanent magnet: neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets are used in many electric-vehicle traction motors and in some wind-turbine generators. Other REEs help make lighting and display phosphors, selected batteries and chemical catalysts. Their specialized properties also appear in components inside phones, computers, hard drives, televisions, monitors and other electronics.

There is no single “rare-earth device.” The elements used, their quantities and even whether they are present depend on the product’s design, chemistry and manufacturer.

What counts as a rare earth element?

“Rare earth elements” describes a group of 17 elements. They are valued less for being rare in the Earth’s crust than for the difficult separation of individual elements and for their distinctive physical and chemical behavior. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) identifies magnets, batteries, phosphors and catalysts as important component forms of rare earths: DOE’s overview of rare earth elements.

In practical terms, an REE is usually a small but functionally important ingredient in a larger component. A magnet may contain neodymium in an alloy; a display may use europium or terbium in a phosphor; a catalyst may use lanthanum or cerium to promote a reaction. The element is not the whole motor, screen or battery.

Permanent magnets: the leading clean-energy use

Permanent magnets convert the magnetic properties of rare earths into compact, powerful motors and generators. This is why they are prominent in electric vehicles (EVs) and in some wind-turbine designs.

Electric-vehicle traction motors

Many EV traction motors use NdFeB magnets, an alloy based on neodymium, iron and boron. The magnets provide a strong, constant magnetic field in the rotor, allowing the motor to produce torque without using a continuously energized rotor coil. That can support a compact, high-power motor, although the complete motor also contains copper windings, steel and electronic controls.

Praseodymium can be included in the magnet alloy, and dysprosium may be added where the magnet must retain performance at elevated temperatures. The exact composition and amount vary by motor design and manufacturer. DOE’s 2011 Critical Materials Strategy and its advanced-manufacturing assessment describe these material choices rather than a universal recipe.

DOE’s electric-motors program says almost all hybrid and plug-in EVs use rare-earth permanent magnets in their traction motors on the page’s stated scope, while also funding work to reduce rare-earth use: Electric Motors Research and Development. That statement should not be read as proof that every vehicle or every motor generation uses the same elements. Motor makers also develop induction, electrically excited and other designs that can reduce or avoid rare-earth magnets.

Wind-turbine generators

Some wind turbines use direct-drive or geared generators with permanent magnets. NdFeB magnets can deliver a strong field in a relatively compact generator, which is useful when reducing nacelle size or maintenance is a design priority. Praseodymium and dysprosium may appear for the same reasons they do in vehicle magnets.

Permanent magnets are important, not universal. Wind turbines also use generator architectures that rely on electrically excited fields or other arrangements. The DOE assessment notes variation in magnet composition, material amounts and equipment design, so a claim that every turbine contains rare earths is too broad: DOE’s advanced-manufacturing technology assessment.

Samarium-cobalt as an alternative

Samarium-cobalt (SmCo) is another permanent-magnet material. It is used in certain niche or demanding applications rather than serving as a blanket replacement for NdFeB in all EVs or turbines. The choice reflects a trade-off among magnetic performance, temperature capability, cost and supply considerations.

Lighting and display phosphors

Phosphors are materials that absorb energy and emit visible light. In a lamp or display, a phosphor’s emission color and efficiency depend on its host material and activating elements. Rare earths are useful activators because they can produce narrow, stable bands of light.

DOE’s 2011 strategy names lanthanum, cerium, europium, terbium and yttrium in connection with energy-efficient lighting. Europium and terbium are associated with red and green emission in many phosphor systems, while cerium is used in phosphor materials that convert higher-energy radiation into visible light. The exact formulation depends on the lamp or display technology; the DOE list is an established example from 2011, not a current market-share survey: 2011 Critical Materials Strategy.

USGS product categories show where these phosphors can matter: fluorescent and LED lighting, flat-screen televisions, monitors and other electronic displays. A product category does not mean every model uses every listed element. Manufacturers can change phosphor chemistry, backlighting and panel architecture: USGS, “Rare earth element mineral deposits in the United States”.

Rare earths inside everyday electronics

Consumer electronics use rare earths in specialized components rather than as bulk structural material. USGS lists cell phones, cameras, hard disks, computers, televisions, monitors and electronic displays among technologies associated with rare-earth elements: USGS, “The rare-earth elements: Vital to modern technologies and lifestyles”.

Phones, cameras and computers

Small speakers, vibration motors, microphones, camera assemblies and other modules can use magnetic or optical materials with rare earths. The specific element depends on the component. A phone model may use a rare-earth magnet in one actuator while another design uses a different magnetic material or geometry.

  • WARNING - The actual pulling force is affected by the size of the contact surface of the item and the smoothness of the contact surface of the magnet.

Hard-disk drives

Hard-disk drives use powerful, compact magnets in their actuator assemblies to move read/write heads quickly and precisely. Rare-earth magnets are one way to achieve the required magnetic strength in a small space. Solid-state drives do not use the same moving-head mechanism, so the presence and role of rare earths cannot be inferred from the word “computer” alone.

Televisions, monitors and displays

Display products can involve rare-earth phosphors or other optical materials that produce color and brightness. Older fluorescent-backlit screens and newer LED-based systems use different architectures, and panel suppliers may choose different phosphor formulations. “A television contains rare earths” is therefore a category-level statement, not a guarantee about every model.

Battery applications: real, but chemistry-specific

Rare earths appear in some battery materials, but they are not a universal ingredient in EV or consumer batteries. DOE’s 2011 strategy gives an example list that includes lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium and neodymium alongside nickel, manganese, cobalt and lithium. Those elements can play different roles in particular battery chemistries; the list is not a claim that every battery contains all of them, or that it represents today’s complete EV-battery market.

For example, a battery chemistry may use a rare-earth-containing alloy in an electrode, while another chemistry uses no rare earth at all. Pack design, supplier choice and changes in chemistry also alter material use. Treat the DOE list as a historical, illustrative example and keep the date visible when citing it: DOE’s 2011 strategy.

Catalysts in chemical processing

Rare earths can serve as catalysts or catalyst components. A catalyst helps a chemical reaction proceed faster or along a preferred pathway without being consumed in the overall reaction. DOE materials identify catalyst applications and chemical-industry use, with lanthanum and cerium among examples discussed in broader DOE explanations: DOE Explains…Critical Materials.

This use is different from a permanent magnet. The value comes from surface chemistry, oxidation behavior or the ability to stabilize another catalyst material, not from producing a strong magnetic field. Because catalyst formulations are tailored to a reaction and process, “rare earth catalyst” describes a family of applications rather than one standard product.

Application map: element, function and certainty

Application Element or material examples What the rare earth contributes How broadly the claim applies
EV traction motors and some wind-turbine generators NdFeB magnets; possible praseodymium and dysprosium; SmCo in alternative or niche roles Strong permanent magnetic field in a compact motor or generator Important application, but composition and even magnet use vary by design and manufacturer
Lighting and displays Lanthanum, cerium, europium, terbium and yttrium in DOE’s 2011 example Phosphors convert energy into visible light and help create display colors Applies to selected phosphor systems; not every lamp or screen uses every element
Batteries Lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium and neodymium in the DOE 2011 example, alongside nickel, manganese, cobalt and lithium Battery-material roles depend on chemistry Illustrative historical example, not a statement about every current EV pack
Chemical catalysts Rare earths including lanthanum and cerium Promote or stabilize selected chemical reactions Used in particular processes and formulations, not all catalysts
Consumer electronics Element varies by component and product Specialized magnetic, optical or related material properties USGS identifies product categories; individual models differ

Why manufacturers are trying to use less rare earth material

Rare-earth magnets can make motors and generators smaller and more powerful, but they introduce material-cost, processing and supply-chain concerns. DOE describes research aimed at reducing rare-earth use in vehicle motors while maintaining performance: Electric Motors Research and Development.

Reduction can take several forms: using less magnet material, changing the alloy, redesigning the motor, substituting another magnet type or adopting a motor architecture that does not require a permanent magnet. The same principle applies to lighting, displays and batteries: a new formulation may change which elements are needed without changing the product’s outward purpose.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • “Every EV battery contains rare earths.” Battery chemistry varies, and the DOE element list is a 2011 example rather than a universal specification.
  • “Every electric motor uses a rare-earth magnet.” Many EVs use permanent magnets, but alternative motor designs exist, and manufacturers are researching lower-rare-earth options.
  • “Every wind turbine has neodymium.” Some generators use permanent magnets; others use different generator designs.
  • “Rare earths are only used in clean energy.” USGS examples include phones, cameras, computers, hard drives, televisions, monitors and lighting.
  • “A product category identifies its exact elements.” It does not. The component, chemistry, generation and supplier determine the actual material list.

How to interpret an element claim about a product

  1. Identify the component. Ask whether the claim concerns a motor magnet, phosphor, battery electrode, catalyst or another part.
  2. Separate the element from the device. A rare earth is usually an ingredient in an alloy, phosphor or catalyst, not the whole product.
  3. Check the design and date. Element choices change with motor architecture, display technology and battery chemistry. A 2011 example should not be presented as a 2026 market average.
  4. Look for scope words. “Some,” “many,” “selected” and “may contain” are accurate when designs vary; “all” usually is not supported by the available evidence.
  5. Ask what property is needed. Magnetic strength, light emission, chemical reactivity and battery behavior are different functions, so the relevant elements and trade-offs differ.

The practical answer in one view

Rare earths matter in clean energy primarily when a strong, compact permanent magnet improves a motor or generator. They matter in lighting and displays when phosphors need efficient, controlled color emission. In electronics, they are dispersed through specialized magnetic and optical components. Batteries and catalysts are genuine but more chemistry- and process-specific applications. Across all four areas, the correct question is not whether a product is “clean” or “electronic,” but which component it uses and what material property that component requires.
