That makes Porter the current first-listed option at his spot—not a guarantee of starts or a settled workload. His regular-season log through Week 3 is too small to establish a trend, so the best way to judge his role is to watch his snaps, assignments and execution over time.
What the current depth chart and game log show
The Raiders’ September 29 depth chart lists Porter first at one cornerback position, Stokes first at the other and Masses behind Porter. The team calls the chart unofficial and fluid. It is a snapshot of the listed order, not evidence by itself of playing time, future starts or a fixed defensive assignment.

Through Week 3, Porter’s official 2026 game log records two passes defensed against Miami in Week 1, no listed regular-season statistics against the Chargers in Week 2, and one tackle against New Orleans in Week 3. Three games are not enough to project a season-long role from those totals.
How to judge whether his defensive role is growing
Track defensive snaps and starts from week to week, alongside his place on the depth chart. Those measures show opportunity and workload more directly than tackle totals alone. The Raiders’ profile says Porter appeared in all 17 games and started 10 in 2025, while contributing on both defense and special teams. A Raiders mailbag later reported that he played 93.8% of defensive snaps from Week 13 onward in 2025; across those final five games, the team reported 12 solo tackles, three pass deflections and one fumble recovery. That late-season stretch offers context for his development, but it does not establish his 2026 workload.

Porter’s position change also matters when interpreting progress. He played wide receiver early in his college career, switched to cornerback before the 2022 season and became a college starter in 2024. In a 2025 Raiders Q&A, he said: “I knew it wasn’t where I wanted to be or needed to be, but I felt I was in a good place to take off and that’s kind of what ended up happening.” That background helps explain why technique and recognition are useful areas to watch; it does not predict how quickly he will develop in the NFL.
What to watch in his coverage
Zone positioning and man coverage
NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein’s draft-era evaluation described Porter’s college experience as heavily zone-oriented and noted that his athleticism could support more man coverage. In zone, watch whether he maintains sound positioning and recognizes routes entering his area. In man coverage, look for whether he stays in phase with the receiver and preserves leverage through the route.

Route recognition and pattern matching
Zierlein identified pattern matching as an area for development. When a play is visible, watch whether Porter reads route combinations and carries or passes off receivers in a way that fits the coverage. Broadcast views do not always reveal the assignment, so a receiver catching the ball—or Porter appearing away from it—is not enough on its own to call the play a technique failure.

The same pre-draft analysis credited Porter’s length as an asset for shading downfield throws, while identifying strength in press coverage and contested situations as areas to build. Look for whether he disrupts a receiver’s release without drawing a flag, stays positioned through the catch point and makes a play on the ball when the opportunity is clear.

How to assess tackling and special teams separately
Run support and open-field tackling
Run-support tackling was another development point in Zierlein’s evaluation. Pay attention to Porter’s angles and whether he finishes open-field tackles, particularly when an offense attacks his side. A tackle total cannot show how often a corner was targeted or how many chances he had to make a play.
Special-teams value
Porter blocked five kicks over his Iowa State career, which the Raiders describe as a Big 12 record, and recorded five special-teams tackles in 2025. Those are meaningful contributions, but keep them separate from evidence that he is becoming a dependable defensive corner. His Raiders profile lists 37 tackles, 25 solo tackles, three passes defensed and one fumble recovery in 2025, in addition to the five special-teams tackles.

How the cornerback competition has changed since minicamp
In June 2026, head coach Klint Kubiak said rookie Jermod McCoy would compete and get plenty of reps, describing his availability as “a moving target.” A Raiders mailbag that month also framed the CB2 competition as open and discussed Porter as still acclimating to the position. Those were offseason comments. The September 29 depth chart is the newer team snapshot, but it remains unofficial and does not settle how the competition will translate into game-day snaps.

For week-to-week comparisons, use four separate indicators: defensive snaps and starts; coverage assignment and execution; ball disruption and positioning at the catch point; and tackling and run support. Record special-teams production separately. This keeps a change in opportunity distinct from a change in performance.
