What Questionable, Doubtful and Out Mean on an NFL Injury Report

Questionable means it is uncertain whether an NFL player will play; Doubtful means the player is unlikely to participate; and Out means the player will not play. These are qualitative game-status labels, not percentage odds. Practice participation is reported separately.

What each NFL injury designation means

The NFL’s published policy defines the three game-status designations this way: “Questionable means it is uncertain as to whether the player will play in the game; Doubtful means it is unlikely the player will participate; and Out means the player will not play.” The wording comes from the league’s Competition Committee-approved policy revision, published by NFL.com.

Designation Meaning How to interpret it
Questionable Uncertain whether the player will play. The player’s availability is in question; the label does not specify a probability.
Doubtful Unlikely the player will participate. Participation is not expected, but this is not the same as being ruled out.
Out The player will not play. The player is ruled out for the game.

Does Questionable mean 50/50?

No. The current NFL definition says only that it is uncertain whether the player will play. It does not set a 50% chance or any other numeric threshold. The same is true of Doubtful: “unlikely” is a qualitative description, not a published probability. Avoid turning either label into precise odds.

How practice participation relates to game status

Practice participation and game status are separate fields on the NFL injury report. Participation describes how much of practice a player completed; game status describes expected availability for the game. The league’s report uses Did Not Participate, Limited Participation, and Full Participation. Limited means fewer than 100% of normal repetitions; Full means 100%, according to the official NFL injury report and the policy revision.

#1 Best Overall

Do not translate one field directly into the other. A player can have a practice entry and a game-status designation, and the live report includes players with Full Participation who still carry a game status. Practice information is useful context, but it does not replace the game-status label.

Why Probable is missing

Probable is no longer an NFL game-status category. In 2016, the league said it removed the designation because approximately 95% of players listed as Probable in prior years played. That figure explains the change; it is not a current estimate for players labeled Questionable or Doubtful.

How to check a player’s status for a specific game

  1. Open the NFL’s official injury report and find the player’s team and name.
  2. Read the practice-participation field separately from the game-status field. Use the latter for the listed expectation about playing.
  3. Check the report again closer to kickoff and review any later team announcement. Individual player statuses can change, and a live listing is more relevant than an archived policy document.

An older 2016 NFL injury report policy describes reporting procedures from that season, including updates in certain circumstances. It is historical context, not a live status source or a substitute for the current report.

Common misreadings to avoid

  • Questionable does not mean exactly 50/50. The official definition gives no odds.
  • Doubtful does not mean formally ruled out. The NFL reserves that meaning for Out.
  • A practice designation is not a game designation. Read the two fields separately.
  • An old article or policy is not a current player update. For an individual game, check the latest official report and team update.
