What Quarterly Production Volumes Can and Cannot Tell Investors

Quarterly production volumes show how much of a stated product a company produced during a defined period. They can help identify changes in operating activity, but they do not by themselves show whether the company earned more, generated more cash, or can sustain production. To interpret the number, check what was counted, compare it with prices and costs, and account for changes to the company’s assets.

What a quarterly production figure actually measures

A production figure is a historical operating measure, not a complete measure of business performance. Its meaning depends on the product, period, unit, geography, and ownership or reporting basis. A quarterly total and a daily average are not interchangeable, and a combined figure can conceal changes in the mix of products or assets that produced it.

For U.S. oil-and-gas registrants, SEC Regulation S-K Item 1204 calls for production disclosure by final product sold and geographical area. It says: “For each of the last three fiscal years disclose production, by final product sold, of oil, gas, and other products.” The rule also provides for disclosure of average sales prices and average production costs. See the SEC’s Oil and Gas Reporting Modernization compliance guide and the final rule and interpretation.

Those rules are specific to U.S. oil-and-gas reporting; they are not a universal template for manufacturing, mining, or other production-based industries. In the oil-and-gas context, net production generally reflects the registrant’s interest after royalties and production due others. Natural gas is reported on an “as sold” basis under the rule’s instructions. Check the company’s disclosures before comparing figures, particularly when units or aggregation methods differ.

What a change in volume can signal

Compared on a consistent basis, a rise or fall can flag a change in operating activity. It may reflect performance at existing operations, downtime, a change in capacity, asset purchases or sales, or a shift in product mix. The volume itself does not identify which explanation applies; the company’s period-over-period discussion and detailed tables provide that context.

For example, BSI Industries reported 33,747 barrels of oil equivalent (BOE), averaging 371 BOE per day, for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, compared with 48,816 BOE and 536 BOE per day in the prior-year quarter. The company attributed lower quantities to divestitures in Wyoming and West Texas as well as natural decline in its remaining assets. That is a company-specific example, not an industry benchmark. Its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 illustrates why investors should distinguish changes in the asset base from like-for-like operating trends where the filing allows.

Why higher production does not necessarily mean higher revenue

Revenue depends on both the quantity sold and the realized price, as well as product and sales mix. Those factors can move in opposite directions: more volume can coincide with lower revenue if prices fall enough, while lower volume can coincide with higher revenue if prices rise enough.

In the same BSI quarter, oil and gas revenue increased by $0.1 million even as production declined. The filing attributed the revenue change primarily to a 41% increase in oil sales prices, which offset lower production volumes. The price change and volumes are specific to BSI’s comparison with the prior-year quarter; they are not market-wide averages.

Why costs and product mix matter

Production costs help show whether a volume change came with a change in the cost of producing each unit. Compare both total costs and per-unit costs, and check how the company calculates the unit figure. A lower cost per BOE, for instance, is not automatically evidence that operations became more efficient if the company sold higher-cost properties or changed its product mix.

BSI reported lease operating expense of $29.48 per BOE for the three months ended June 30, 2026, compared with $31.14 per BOE in the prior-year quarter. The company explained that its property mix changed after divestitures. The figures therefore need to be read alongside the portfolio change rather than treated as a straightforward measure of improved efficiency.

How to compare quarterly production figures

  1. Match the period and measurement basis. Check whether each number is a quarterly total, daily average, or another measure; compare like with like.
  2. Identify products and units. Review which products are included and whether the company combines them. Do not assume different products or unit conventions are directly comparable.
  3. Check geography and ownership basis. Look for the locations covered and whether production is gross, net, or otherwise defined. In oil and gas, review royalty treatment and the company’s explanation of its reporting basis.
  4. Account for changes in the asset base. Note acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, capacity changes, and downtime. Separate portfolio effects from performance at retained operations where the disclosures permit.
  5. Read volume with prices, revenue, and costs. Check realized sales prices, product mix, total production costs, and unit costs before drawing conclusions about performance.
  6. Use the company’s explanation and longer-term disclosures. Read management’s discussion, then consider reserves, capital spending, debt, liquidity, and guidance to assess the broader outlook.

When comparing companies, apply the same checks to each one. Even similar-looking production totals may represent different products, regions, ownership interests, or asset portfolios.

Why quarterly volume is not a reserve estimate or forecast

A quarter’s output tells investors what was produced during that period; it does not establish how much economically recoverable production remains or how much the company will produce in the future. Under SEC oil-and-gas definitions, reserves concern estimated remaining quantities expected to be economically producible through development projects applied to known accumulations, subject to conditions including rights, market access, permits, and financing.

Future output and its value can depend on development spending, exploration results, acquisitions, prices, operating and development costs, and transportation or infrastructure constraints. Reserve estimates and guidance are estimates based on assumptions, not outcomes guaranteed by a recent production trend.

Permian Resources’ Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025, shows how price assumptions can affect company-specific reserve estimates. It reported that a 10% increase or decrease in crude and natural-gas prices used in its reserve estimates was associated with a 45.5 MMBoe (4.1%) increase or a 69.5 MMBoe (6.2%) decrease in proved reserve quantities, respectively. Its reported pre-tax PV-10 sensitivity was plus or minus $2.2 billion (24% and 23%, respectively). These are sensitivities in that company’s filing, not a general rule or a production forecast. See the Permian Resources 2025 Form 10-K.
