Quantum teleportation transfers a quantum state, not a particle or a person. In the standard qubit protocol, two parties share an entangled pair, the sender performs a joint measurement, and the receiver uses two classical bits to choose a correction. The receiver’s existing qubit then carries the sender’s original state. The matter that initially carried the state stays where it was, the unknown state is not copied, and the classical communication prevents faster-than-light messaging.
What “quantum teleportation” actually means
The word teleportation suggests that an object disappears in one place and appears in another. Quantum teleportation does not work that way. It is a protocol for transferring the state of a quantum system to another system at a distant location.

A quantum state describes the information encoded in a system, such as the polarization of a photon or the state of a qubit. The protocol does not send the original physical carrier through space. Instead, the receiver’s particle is transformed so that it has the same state the sender’s particle had at the start.

IBM Quantum Learning puts the distinction directly: “matter is not teleported in quantum teleportation — what is actually teleported is quantum information.” That wording is more precise than saying that a particle has been transported.

The protocol also does not create a second copy of an unknown state. The sender’s input is consumed by the measurement, while the receiver obtains the state on a different physical system. This behavior is consistent with the no-cloning constraint, which rules out making a perfect duplicate of an arbitrary unknown quantum state.
The standard qubit protocol, step by step
The basic protocol involves two parties traditionally called Alice and Bob. Alice has an unknown input qubit. Alice and Bob also share one entangled pair, with one member held by each person.
1. Prepare the three qubits
Alice starts with the unknown qubit whose state she wants to transfer. She holds one half of an entangled pair, and Bob holds the other half. The entangled pair is the quantum resource that links their measurement outcomes and Bob’s system.
At this point, Bob does not yet have the input state. He has only his half of the shared pair. Alice has both the unknown input and her half of the entangled resource.
2. Alice performs a joint Bell measurement
Alice measures her two qubits together: the unknown input and her half of the entangled pair. This is a joint Bell measurement, rather than two independent measurements of the qubits.
The measurement has four possible outcomes. Each outcome can be represented by two classical bits. The measurement extracts a two-bit label that tells Bob which correction is required, but it does not send the full unknown quantum state through the classical channel.

The measurement also changes the situation irreversibly. Alice’s original input qubit no longer remains available as an untouched copy. Its state has been consumed as part of the teleportation process.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Alice sends two classical bits
Alice communicates the two-bit measurement result to Bob over an ordinary classical channel. The channel may be electrical, optical or another conventional means of transmitting classical data; the protocol requires only that Bob receive the result.
These bits are essential. Before Bob receives them, his qubit is not in a form that lets him identify the input state. The shared entanglement supplies quantum correlations, while the classical message tells Bob which of the possible corrections matches Alice’s measurement outcome.
4. Bob applies the corresponding correction
Bob uses the two-bit result to select a correction operation for his qubit. The correction is determined by the protocol’s predefined rule for the four possible measurement outcomes.
After Bob applies the appropriate correction, his qubit has the same quantum state that Alice’s input qubit had before the measurement. The state has been reconstructed on Bob’s existing physical system; Alice’s original carrier has not traveled to him.

| Protocol component | Its job | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Shared entangled pair | Provides the nonclassical quantum correlation linking Alice’s and Bob’s systems | Does not by itself deliver a usable message or the complete input state |
| Bell measurement | Combines Alice’s unknown input with her half of the entangled pair and produces one of four outcomes | Does not leave Alice with an untouched copy of the input |
| Two classical bits | Tell Bob which correction to apply | Do not carry the full quantum state on their own |
| Bob’s correction | Transforms Bob’s qubit into the input state | Does not move the original particle from Alice to Bob |
Why quantum teleportation cannot send a message instantly
Entanglement can produce correlations between measurements made on separated systems, but those correlations are not a usable faster-than-light message. Bob still needs Alice’s two-bit result before he knows which correction to perform.
That classical result cannot arrive before the classical communication itself. Consequently, the standard protocol does not bypass the speed limit imposed on ordinary information transfer. Describing teleportation as instantaneous communication leaves out the required classical channel.
It is also misleading to say that Alice sends the quantum state by radio, fiber or another classical link. The classical link sends only the measurement result. Bob’s ability to reconstruct the state depends on that result being combined with the entangled resource already shared between the two parties.

It does not teleport matter
No atom, photon or other material carrier is transported from Alice’s location to Bob’s. Bob uses his own member of the entangled pair. The physical system that held Alice’s input remains in Alice’s laboratory, although its original state has been consumed by the measurement.
It does not teleport people or objects
A human body, a machine or an everyday object is not moved through this protocol. The term is an analogy borrowed from science fiction, not a description of transporting bulk matter.
It does not make a second copy of an unknown state
Bob receives the state only after Alice’s input has been measured. The process therefore transfers the state rather than leaving identical versions at both ends. Any explanation that says Alice keeps the original quantum state unchanged while Bob receives an identical one is describing a different, prohibited operation.

It does not work with the classical bits alone
The two-bit message is not a compressed copy of the arbitrary quantum state. Without the shared entanglement, the measurement result is insufficient. Without the classical result, Bob cannot select the required correction.
It does not guarantee a universal distance or performance figure
The sources describing the protocol and experiments do not establish one general maximum distance, success percentage or throughput that applies to every teleportation system. An experimental statement about a particular setup should not be turned into a universal statistic.
How experiments demonstrate the idea
Quantum teleportation is a real quantum-information procedure, not a claim that matter has been beamed from one place to another. Experimental work tests whether a state prepared in one system can be transferred to another system using the required entanglement and classical information.
A 2001 Physical Review Letters paper by Kim, Kulik and Shih reported “Quantum Teleportation of a Polarization State with a Complete Bell State Measurement.” Its abstract describes “irreversibly teleporting an unknown arbitrary polarization state from one system to another distant system by disassembling into and then later reconstructing from purely classical information and nonclassical EPR correlations.” The language refers to the state of a physical system, not to transporting the system itself.
The foundational protocol was proposed in Bennett and co-authors’ 1993 paper, “Teleporting an unknown quantum state via dual classical and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen channels,” published in Physical Review Letters. The title itself identifies the two resources: a classical channel and an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen, or EPR, quantum correlation.

A useful classroom analogy—and its limits
The American Physical Society’s “Classical Teleportation: Student Guide” uses ordinary objects such as coins, sleeves and binder clips to model parts of the reasoning. A classroom activity of this kind can help students see how a shared setup and a communicated result allow one person to reproduce a condition at another location.
Coins in that exercise are only teaching props. They do not become entangled, no quantum state is transferred, and the activity is not a quantum teleportation experiment. The analogy illustrates the logic of coordinating a remote correction; it cannot reproduce the physical behavior of a Bell measurement or an EPR correlation.
Optional teaching box: If you use the APS activity, label it explicitly as a classical model. Explain which step represents the communicated measurement result and which step is only an analogy for Bob’s correction. Do not advertise the materials as quantum equipment.

Quantum teleportation compared with familiar ideas
| Idea | What happens | Why it is different from quantum teleportation |
|---|---|---|
| Physical transport | The original object or particle is carried from one location to another | Teleportation leaves the original carrier in place and transfers its state to another system |
| Copying a file | The source data remains while a duplicate is created | An unknown quantum state is not duplicated; the input is consumed during the protocol |
| Sending classical data | Bits travel through a classical channel | The two classical bits in teleportation identify a correction and are not the complete quantum state |
| Science-fiction teleportation | A person or object disappears and reappears elsewhere | The quantum protocol transports no person, object or bulk matter |
| Classical classroom demonstration | Coins or other props model coordinated steps | The props reproduce the reasoning only; they have no entanglement or quantum state |
How to describe the protocol accurately
Small wording choices matter because “teleportation” is easy to misunderstand. The most reliable descriptions identify the object being transferred, the resources required and the role of the classical message.
- Say that a quantum state or quantum information is transferred.
- Say that the receiver’s existing qubit ends with the input state after a correction.
- Name both resources: a shared entangled pair and a classical channel carrying two bits in the standard qubit protocol.
- Explain that Alice’s Bell measurement consumes the original input and prevents a second untouched copy.
- State that the classical message is necessary, so the protocol is not faster-than-light communication.
- Use “matter is not teleported” when correcting the common misconception that a particle or person has moved.
Avoid saying that the entangled pair “contains” a stored copy of the state, that the classical bits transmit the entire state, or that Bob receives Alice’s original particle. None of those descriptions matches the protocol.
What a reader should take away
Quantum teleportation is best understood as a coordinated state-transfer procedure. Alice and Bob begin with a shared entangled resource. Alice combines the unknown input with her half of that resource in a Bell measurement. She sends Bob two classical bits, and Bob applies the correction associated with those bits. His qubit then carries the input state.
The protocol’s striking feature is therefore informational, not cinematic: a state is reconstructed on a distant system without transporting the original carrier. The entanglement supplies the quantum part, the classical message supplies the missing instruction, and the measurement consumes the input so that no forbidden copy remains.
