Short answer: A sufficiently powerful, fault-tolerant quantum computer could threaten cryptocurrency coins protected by exposed elliptic-curve public keys. Shor’s algorithm could recover a private key from its public key and produce an unauthorized signature. That is a conditional future risk, not a capability demonstrated by today’s quantum machines.

Quantum computing would affect signatures, hash functions and mining in different ways. Grover’s algorithm offers a quadratic search speedup; it does not simply reverse SHA-256 or hand an attacker control of a blockchain. The practical risk depends on which cryptographic object is exposed, how a coin’s output was created and spent, and whether the network has adopted a post-quantum signature scheme.

The direct threat is to public-key signatures

Bitcoin and many other cryptocurrencies use elliptic-curve digital signatures to authorize spending. A transaction is accepted because it carries a valid signature made with a private key corresponding to a public key committed to, or shown by, the output being spent.

Shor’s algorithm targets the mathematical problem behind elliptic-curve signatures: the elliptic-curve discrete-logarithm problem. On a sufficiently large, error-corrected quantum computer, the algorithm could calculate a private key from a known public key. An attacker could then create a valid-looking transaction and move the associated funds without the owner’s consent.

The attack would not work by guessing a wallet password, breaking a hardware device or “decrypting the blockchain.” It would be a cryptanalytic attack on the signature scheme itself. The essential chain of events is:

  1. A cryptocurrency output has a public key that an attacker can obtain.
  2. A quantum computer runs an implementation of Shor’s algorithm against the elliptic-curve public key.
  3. The resulting private key is used to generate a valid spending signature.
  4. Nodes verify that signature under the existing rules and may accept the unauthorized spend.

This is why the phrase “quantum computers will break Bitcoin” is too broad. The vulnerable primitive is the public-key signature, and the prerequisite is access to the relevant public key. Hash commitments, address formats and proof-of-work have different properties.

Why an address is not the same as a public key

A Bitcoin address is generally an encoding of a spending condition, often involving a hash of a public key. A public-key hash is not the public key itself. Hashing gives an extra layer between the address shown to a payer and the key needed for a signature attack.

For output types that reveal the public key only when the owner spends, the key becomes visible in that spending transaction. An attacker who has a quantum computer capable of running Shor’s algorithm could then target the exposed key, subject to transaction timing and network confirmation conditions. Other output designs can put a public key, or key-derived data that allows earlier observation, on-chain before a spend. Reusing an address can also leave a public key visible from an earlier transaction.

That makes the reader’s common question—“Is a Bitcoin address only quantum-vulnerable after its transaction?”—dependent on the output and its history:

Situation What is visible Quantum implication
An output commits to a hash of a public key and has never been spent The address-level commitment is visible; the underlying public key may not be The direct Shor target is not necessarily exposed until the spending transaction reveals the key
An output has been spent The spending transaction normally reveals the public key for signature verification The revealed key can be targeted by a future cryptographically relevant quantum computer
An output type places a public key in an earlier transaction The public key is visible before the current spend The key can be targeted before a new spending transaction is broadcast
An address or key is reused Earlier transaction history can expose the public key Later funds controlled by that exposed key may face the same signature risk

These cases are why it is inaccurate to label every address equally exposed or to publish a single percentage of “quantum-vulnerable Bitcoin.” The answer depends on output type, reuse, the time at which a key becomes visible and the assumptions used to count funds. No harmonized exposure percentage is established here.

The Bitcoin Developer Guide’s transaction documentation explains how scripts and signatures are carried in transactions, while its wallet documentation describes key and address handling. Those details matter when evaluating exposure; the word “address” alone is not enough.

Shor and Grover solve different problems

Quantum discussions often combine two algorithms that have very different consequences.

Dimension Elliptic-curve signatures Hash functions and proof-of-work
Relevant algorithm Shor’s algorithm Grover’s algorithm
Theoretical effect Can solve the underlying discrete-log problem on a sufficiently capable quantum computer Provides a quadratic speedup for search; it is not direct hash inversion
Cryptocurrency consequence An exposed public key could yield a private key and permit a forged spend Search security is reduced in idealized models; practical mining effects depend on costs and network conditions
Present status Future conditional threat; no known machine can do this at cryptocurrency scale Future theoretical effect; not evidence of an automatic mining takeover

Grover’s algorithm can search an unstructured space in roughly the square root of the work required by a classical exhaustive search. In security-strength terms, that is commonly described as reducing the effective brute-force margin of hash constructions such as SHA-256, double-SHA-256 and RIPEMD-160 to their square root in an idealized model.

That description does not mean a quantum computer can read a SHA-256 input from its output on demand. Grover is a search procedure with substantial circuit, memory, error-correction and verification requirements. It also does not solve the elliptic-curve discrete-logarithm problem; that is the domain of Shor’s algorithm. Saying “hashing makes Bitcoin quantum-proof” is therefore as misleading as saying “quantum computers instantly reverse SHA-256.”

Mining is not the same as stealing through a signature

Bitcoin proof-of-work asks miners to search for a block-header hash below a difficulty target. A theoretical Grover speedup changes the search model, but it does not automatically give a quantum miner control of the network.

A practical assessment would have to account for quantum circuit depth, error-correction overhead, machine availability, classical-to-quantum data movement, electricity and cooling, the number of competing miners, block propagation and the current difficulty adjustment. Even an advantage in finding candidate nonces would not by itself guarantee a majority of network hashpower or a successful 51% attack.

The signature attack has a more direct failure mode: once a public key is exposed and its private key is recoverable, an attacker can attempt to authorize a spend. Mining security and spending authorization should be analyzed separately rather than treated as one generic “Bitcoin quantum” problem.

No reliable arrival date is known

There is no trustworthy year in which a machine capable of breaking today’s public-key cryptography is expected to appear. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) post-quantum cryptography overview and its explanation of post-quantum cryptography note that estimates range from a few years to a few decades, while major engineering challenges remain.

Those estimates are forecasts, not deadlines. The relevant machine would need many high-quality, error-corrected qubits and reliable long computations, not merely a demonstration of quantum speedup on a laboratory benchmark. Current quantum computers have not demonstrated the ability to derive cryptocurrency private keys from real-world public keys.

Because the lead time for changing a widely used protocol can be long, uncertainty is not a reason to claim an imminent theft event. It is a reason to distinguish present-day security from migration planning.

What post-quantum standards mean for cryptocurrency

On August 13, 2024, NIST announced three finalized Federal Information Processing Standards for post-quantum cryptography:

  • FIPS 203, ML-KEM: a key-encapsulation mechanism.
  • FIPS 204, ML-DSA: a digital-signature standard.
  • FIPS 205, SLH-DSA: a hash-based digital-signature standard.

The NIST standards announcement establishes the standards for general cryptographic use; it does not mean Bitcoin has adopted them. Cryptocurrency signatures must fit a blockchain’s transaction format, validation rules, fee market, key sizes, script system and upgrade process. A standard can be finalized while a particular network still uses its existing signature scheme.

Dustin Moody, the NIST mathematician who leads the post-quantum cryptography standardization project, said: “We encourage organizations to begin their transition to these standards immediately to ensure their data remains secure in the quantum era.” For a cryptocurrency, “transition” would require a protocol design, implementation, testing, deployment and broad acceptance by the network—not merely installing new wallet software.

Bitcoin migration proposals are not activated protection

BIP 360 discusses Pay-to-Merkle-Root and public-key-exposure considerations. BIP 361 proposes a post-quantum migration path that includes a legacy-signature sunset. They are proposal documents, not evidence that the Bitcoin network has activated a quantum-resistant rule set or that all existing coins have moved to new signatures.

Any migration would have to answer difficult questions: which new signature algorithms are permitted, how large signatures affect block space and fees, how old outputs are treated, how users prove control during a transition, what happens to inactive keys and how nodes coordinate enforcement. Until a proposal is adopted and deployed, existing elliptic-curve outputs retain their existing security assumptions.

What users and developers should do now

For everyday holders

  • Do not assume that moving coins to a hardware wallet makes the underlying signature scheme quantum-resistant. Better custody protects keys from theft today; it does not change the blockchain’s cryptography.
  • Avoid unnecessary address and public-key reuse. Reuse can expose a key through transaction history and makes future migration more complicated.
  • Keep recovery material secure and maintain software that can receive protocol upgrades. A future migration may require an explicit transfer to a new output type.
  • Be skeptical of services promising a guaranteed “quantum-proof” date or a wallet setting that supposedly solves the protocol-level problem.

For wallet, exchange and protocol developers

  • Inventory where public keys are revealed, including output types, change handling and reused keys.
  • Design migration paths that can coexist with legacy outputs long enough for users to move funds without creating a rushed market-wide event.
  • Measure signature size, verification cost, bandwidth and block-space effects before selecting a post-quantum scheme.
  • Track standards and protocol proposals separately: NIST’s FIPS documents define cryptographic algorithms, while a cryptocurrency must still adopt compatible consensus and transaction rules.

These are preparation steps, not proof that a quantum attack is imminent. The central technical question remains whether a future machine can recover a private key from a public key quickly enough to beat the owner’s legitimate transaction and the network’s confirmation process.

The practical bottom line

Quantum computing could eventually break the elliptic-curve signature protection of cryptocurrency outputs whose public keys are exposed. It would not automatically reverse hashes, erase the blockchain or guarantee control of Bitcoin mining. Grover’s quadratic search advantage and Shor’s discrete-log attack address different primitives, and neither describes a capability available from current quantum computers.

For now, the defensible position is conditional: treat public-key exposure as the key risk, avoid claims about a precise arrival year, and distinguish finalized post-quantum standards from cryptocurrency upgrades that have actually been activated.
