Quantitative trading firms hire interns and new graduates who can reason precisely with uncertain information, turn ideas into testable analyses, and explain their conclusions clearly. The strongest applications show evidence of quantitative judgment, programming or data fluency, disciplined experimentation, and collaborative communication—not just a list of finance courses.
Requirements differ by firm, office, desk, and hiring year. Optiver’s current student and graduate descriptions provide a concrete example of what one major market maker emphasizes, but they should be treated as an employer-specific guide rather than a universal industry checklist.

The capabilities firms are trying to identify
Recruiters rarely expect an intern to arrive with a complete trading system or years of market experience. They are looking for signs that you can learn quickly, make sound decisions with incomplete information, and test whether an attractive idea actually survives contact with data.
Quantitative and logical reasoning
Quantitative trading starts with probability, estimation, algebra, and logic. In Optiver’s Amsterdam 2027 quantitative trading internship listing, “exceptional quantitative and logical reasoning” is an explicit criterion. That wording describes the level of thinking expected in the role; it does not establish a universal score threshold for every firm.

In practice, interviewers may ask you to estimate an unknown quantity, reason about conditional probability, identify an error in an argument, or make a decision when the odds are not fully known. A correct answer matters, but so does a structured approach: define the variables, state assumptions, calculate carefully, and check whether the result is plausible.
Judgment under uncertainty
Trading decisions involve noisy observations, changing prices, transaction costs, and risks that may not be visible in a small sample. Firms therefore look for candidates who can distinguish a compelling story from evidence that would support a real decision.
The trading internship description lays out a useful sequence: define a testable hypothesis, prioritize ideas, validate assumptions with real market data, stress-test the result, and explain what the analysis means. This is a transferable decision process for trading, research, and many technical roles.
Programming and data fluency
Python is listed as a plus—not an absolute requirement—in the Amsterdam trading internship listing. The same program description says interns build and backtest a strategy in Python. That combination signals an important distinction: you may not need advanced software engineering before joining, but you should be able to learn tools quickly and use code to investigate a question.
Useful entry-level skills include loading structured data, handling missing or duplicated records, calculating summary statistics, writing clear functions, plotting results, and comparing an experimental result with a sensible baseline. A small, reproducible analysis is more persuasive than an elaborate project whose assumptions you cannot explain.
Communication and collaboration
A quantitative result has limited value if teammates cannot understand its assumptions, limitations, or operational implications. The trading internship calls for presenting results. The research internship emphasizes explaining technical ideas to different audiences and translating practical questions into research questions.
Expect to discuss your work at two levels: the technical details for a researcher or engineer, and the decision-relevant conclusion for a trader or manager. Be ready to answer: What did you test? Why was that test appropriate? What could make the result wrong? What would you do next?

Curiosity, ownership, and iteration
Research roles often begin with an imperfect question and incomplete data. Optiver’s research description highlights initiative, ambiguous problems, rapid prototyping, and iteration on real data. This favors candidates who can make a reasonable first version, learn from failure, and improve it rather than waiting for perfect instructions.
Evidence can come from a class project, independent analysis, engineering work, a competition, or a non-finance project. The subject is less important than showing how you chose an approach, encountered a problem, and changed your method in response to evidence.
Interest in strategic or competitive activities
The Amsterdam trading listing specifically mentions interest in strategic games or competitive activities. This is a stated preference for that opening, not a requirement that every firm or candidate must play a particular game. If you do have relevant experience—such as chess, sports strategy, programming contests, auctions, or game theory—explain what it taught you about probability, incentives, risk, or decision-making.
What interns may actually do
Job titles can hide substantial differences. Read the project description to understand whether the role centers on rapid decisions, statistical modeling, software, or a mixture of those activities.

Trading internship work
Optiver’s trading internship description includes training in options theory, simulated trading sessions using real market data, work with real datasets, strategy backtesting, and a presentation of findings. The implied workflow is practical:
- Frame a question that can be answered with observable data.
- Check that the data and assumptions are appropriate.
- Implement and backtest a strategy or decision rule.
- Examine robustness and possible failure modes.
- Explain the result, including what it does not prove.
This is a program description, so the exact project, instruments, and tools can change. It does show that applicants should be comfortable moving between theory, code, market context, and communication.
Quantitative research internship work
The research internship description focuses on event-level market data. Projects may involve modeling price dynamics, building signals, or evaluating strategies against actual outcomes. The description stresses that market data is noisy, signals are imperfect, and risk must be considered before an idea can inform a trading system.

Optiver’s graduate page describes a 12-week Global Optiver Academy in Amsterdam for graduates. It covers trading, research, and technology systems before participants move into a role. The duration and structure belong to that page and may change, so candidates should verify the current graduate listing.
A structured academy can reduce the advantage held by applicants who already have industry experience, but it does not remove the need for strong reasoning and learning ability. Your application should still show how you solve unfamiliar problems and absorb feedback.
How trading, research, and graduate openings differ
Use the role’s actual responsibilities—not the word “quant”—to decide what evidence to present.
| Pathway | Emphasis in the cited role descriptions | Evidence to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Trading | Decision-making under market conditions, options theory, simulated trading, rapid quantitative reasoning, and strategy work. | Probability reasoning, clear assumptions, decision-making examples, and a small analysis or backtest you can defend. |
| Quantitative research | Modeling market data, testing hypotheses and signals, evaluating strategies, and collaborating with trading and engineering teams. | A research project showing data validation, model or signal evaluation, robustness checks, and concise explanation. |
| Graduate roles | Role-specific work supported by a structured onboarding academy; the cited graduate page describes 12 weeks in Amsterdam. | Evidence of learning speed, technical fundamentals, teamwork, and readiness to specialize after training. |
For every opening, compare the office, degree timing, required versus preferred coding experience, work authorization, availability, assessment stages, and the balance of trading, research, and engineering work. None of these details should be assumed from another firm’s advertisement.
A preparation plan that produces useful evidence
1. Build probability and estimation habits
Practice conditional probability, expected value, distributions, combinatorics, estimation, and basic statistics. Do not limit preparation to silent problem solving. Explain your assumptions aloud, because interviews often evaluate the reasoning path as well as the final number.
- State what is known and what is uncertain.
- Choose a simple model before adding complexity.
- Check units, edge cases, and whether the answer is in a plausible range.
- Say how additional information would change your decision.
2. Complete a small, defensible data project
Choose a question that can be answered with accessible historical or public data. Keep the scope narrow enough to finish and inspect carefully. A good project might compare a simple signal with a baseline, examine how an event relates to subsequent outcomes, or test whether an apparent pattern persists across periods.

- Write the hypothesis before looking for a favorable result.
- Document where the data came from and what each field means.
- Clean the data and record exclusions or transformations.
- Separate the period used to develop the idea from the period used to evaluate it.
- Measure uncertainty and identify conditions under which the result fails.
- Summarize the conclusion in plain language.
A backtest is not proof that a strategy will make money. Look for leakage, survivorship bias, overfitting, unrealistic fills, ignored costs, and unstable performance. Being able to identify these weaknesses is often more impressive than presenting a spectacular but fragile return chart.
3. Reach practical Python fluency
You do not need to claim expertise you do not have. You should be able to open an unfamiliar dataset, inspect it, write a repeatable analysis, and debug ordinary errors. Practice turning a notebook into a short script or a clearly organized set of functions so another person can reproduce the result.

4. Learn the market concepts relevant to the desk
If the program involves derivatives, learn the basic language of options: calls and puts, strike, expiration, intrinsic and time value, volatility, hedging, and why payoff shape matters. The trading internship explicitly includes options-theory training, so preparation should focus on understanding rather than memorizing advanced formulas.
5. Rehearse explanations for different audiences
Prepare a two-minute version of your main project and a deeper version for follow-up questions. Explain the business or trading question first, then the method, result, limitations, and next step. Ask a non-specialist friend to repeat your conclusion; if they cannot, simplify the explanation.

The Amsterdam 2027 trading internship listing illustrates why dates and eligibility must be checked on the live posting. It asks for a penultimate-year STEM student who can work full-time after graduating in 2028. Applicants whose applications advance are asked to complete online assessments, and the listing says they should be able to take an assessment within seven days.
The same listing states an eight-month global reapplication cooldown after completing an online assessment or interview for an Optiver internship or graduate role. Treat that as a rule for that listing and period, not as an industry standard. Confirm the current wording before applying, especially if you have previously entered the process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Confirm your graduation year and whether your degree is considered STEM for that office.
- Check full-time availability, work authorization, and relocation requirements.
- Record every assessment deadline and the allowed completion window.
- Separate “required” skills from “plus” or preferred skills.
- Save a copy of the job description so your preparation matches the opening you actually selected.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Overclaiming trading experience
Personal trading is not a substitute for disciplined analysis. If you discuss a trading idea, show the data, assumptions, risk controls, and what you learned—not only the profit or loss.

Presenting a backtest without scrutiny
A single performance number can conceal leakage or overfitting. Include a baseline, out-of-sample check, sensitivity analysis, and a candid account of limitations.
Using technical language as a shield
Dense mathematics does not demonstrate understanding if you cannot explain the decision it supports. Define terms, connect them to the question, and distinguish correlation from a causal claim.
Ignoring teamwork
Research and trading systems are built with traders, engineers, and other researchers. Describe a disagreement, handoff, or revision in a project and explain how collaboration improved the result.

What the strongest candidate profile looks like
A competitive intern or graduate applicant can usually demonstrate four connected abilities: solve a quantitative problem with a clear structure, investigate a real dataset without fooling themselves, implement enough code to test an idea, and communicate the result honestly. You do not need to possess all four at an expert level on day one. You do need credible evidence that the capabilities are developing and that you can learn rapidly.
Use the job description to decide which evidence leads your application. For trading, emphasize probability, judgment, strategic thinking, and concise decisions. For research, emphasize hypothesis design, data quality, modeling, robustness, and collaboration. For graduate roles, show fundamentals and examples of learning unfamiliar systems quickly. In every case, make your assumptions visible and treat limitations as part of the analysis rather than an embarrassment.
