What Pupil Dilation Can Reveal About Attention, Effort, and Mental Workload

A larger pupil does not automatically mean you are paying more attention. In controlled experiments, the change in pupil size after a stimulus—called the task-evoked pupillary response (TEPR)—often grows when a task demands more updating, switching, inhibition, or working memory. That makes pupil dilation a useful indirect signal of attentional effort and arousal, not a direct meter of attention, intelligence, motivation, or workload.

To interpret it, researchers compare each person with a prestimulus baseline, control illumination and visual contrast, remove blinks and other artifacts, and check the pupil signal against accuracy, reaction time, gaze behavior, or another physiological measure.

What pupil dilation actually measures

The signal is a change from baseline

Eye trackers record pupil diameter continuously, usually in millimeters. Cognitive-pupillometry studies rarely treat the raw diameter as the result. Instead, they establish a prestimulus baseline and calculate how the pupil changes after a stimulus, instruction, or response cue. This time-locked change is the TEPR.

A TEPR can include an early peak, a sustained response while the person is working, and a recovery toward baseline. Those phases answer different questions. An early increase may follow an unexpected or salient event; a sustained elevation may accompany continued control or memory demands; recovery shows how quickly the response subsides. A single average pupil value cannot distinguish those possibilities.

Why the pupil responds to mental effort

The iris contains muscles controlled by parasympathetic and sympathetic pathways. Cognitive and emotional events alter autonomic balance, and the locus-coeruleus norepinephrine (LC–NE) system is one important contributor to pupil-linked arousal. The safest interpretation is that the pupil reflects arousal and attentional effort associated with LC–NE activity—not that an eye tracker directly measures norepinephrine or reads the brain.

In a classic demonstration quoted in Pauline van der Wel and Henk van Steenbergen’s 2018 review, Daniel Kahneman wrote: “Face a mirror, look at your eyes and invent a mathematical problem, such as 81 times 17. Try to solve the problem and watch your pupil at the same time, a rather difficult exercise in divided attention. After a few attempts, almost everyone is able to observe the pupillary dilation that accompanies mental effort.”

What controlled studies show

Cognitive-control tasks

The 2018 review by van der Wel and van Steenbergen examined updating, switching, and inhibition tasks. Across these domains, increasing task demands typically produced larger pupil responses. The authors argue that the pattern is better understood as effort exerted in response to demand than as a simple scale of task difficulty. Someone may recruit more control to meet a difficult requirement, even if the extra effort does not improve the final score.

This distinction matters when comparing people. A larger response can mean that a participant is investing more control, but it can also occur when success appears unlikely and the participant is nearing disengagement. Pupil size therefore provides evidence about the effort or arousal associated with a condition, not proof that the person succeeded or concentrated continuously.

Multiple-object tracking and brain activity

Dag Alnæs and colleagues combined infrared pupillometry with functional MRI while participants tracked several moving objects. Individual pupil changes were associated with activity in the locus coeruleus, superior colliculus, right thalamus, and the cortical dorsal attention network. Their follow-up pupillometry also found that individual differences in responses to cognitive load could remain relatively stable over a lag of several years.

These findings support pupil size as a peripheral correlate of attentional effort. They do not turn it into a direct neural measurement: the eye signal remains an indirect outcome of several interacting physiological systems.

How pupil data fits with other eye measures

A broader review by Eckstein and colleagues describes pupil dilation alongside gaze position, blinks, and saccades. Each signal captures a different part of behavior. Gaze can show where visual information is being sampled; blinks and saccades can mark interruptions or shifts; the pupil can index arousal and effort. Treating one signal as a complete account of cognition risks confusing these distinct processes.

Does a bigger pupil mean more attention?

Usually, only under a controlled comparison

If the same person completes two visually matched conditions and the higher-demand condition produces a larger baseline-corrected TEPR, it is reasonable to say that the condition elicited more pupil-linked effort or arousal. Within-person contrasts are generally more interpretable than comparing raw pupil diameters between people.

The comparison should specify what changed: the number of items, rule complexity, switching requirement, inhibition, or memory load. It should also align the timing of the response with the event being analyzed. A peak shortly after a surprise is not equivalent to a sustained response during a long working-memory interval.

Why dilation and performance can diverge

Accuracy and reaction time do not have a one-to-one relationship with dilation. A participant may show a large response while making errors, taking longer, becoming uncertain, or disengaging. Conversely, a practiced participant may perform accurately with a smaller response because the task requires less control.

How an eye-tracking study measures mental workload

A typical measurement workflow

  1. Stabilize the visual setup. Keep display size, viewing distance, color, contrast, and luminance consistent between conditions.
  2. Record a baseline. Measure the pupil before each trial or event so the later response can be expressed as a change from that participant’s starting point.
  3. Present the task event. Mark the exact stimulus onset, instruction, or response cue that should produce the time-locked signal.
  4. Capture the full time course. Retain the stimulus-locked peak, any sustained interval, and the recovery period instead of reducing the trace to one raw diameter.
  5. Handle data quality. Detect blinks, dropouts, and implausible samples; interpolate or remove affected segments according to a stated rule.
  6. Define processing choices in advance. Report sampling rate, blink interpolation, artifact rejection, baseline method, smoothing or filtering, analysis window, and statistical model.
  7. Pair physiology with behavior. Collect accuracy, reaction time, omissions, and other task outcomes. Add gaze, self-report, or another physiological measure when the interpretation affects a decision.

There is no single universally agreed cognitive-pupillometry pipeline. Two studies can therefore obtain different estimates from similar tasks if they use different baselines, filters, exclusion rules, or time windows. Transparent methods are part of the result.

Lighting is an experimental variable, not background detail

Ambient illumination changes baseline pupil size. Screen or stimulus luminance can trigger the pupillary light reflex, producing constriction or dilation that may mimic a cognitive effect. Methods guidance recommends measuring luminance, matching visual conditions across task conditions, reporting stimulus size, color, and contrast, and avoiding ceiling or floor pupil sizes where little movement remains possible.

If one condition is brighter, a larger or smaller pupil cannot be attributed confidently to workload. Even a perfectly timed response can be dominated by the visual reflex when luminance is uncontrolled.

How to compare two conditions responsibly

Comparison axis What to examine Interpretive question
Demand Items, rule complexity, switching, inhibition, or memory load Did the manipulation actually increase the control requirement?
Time course Prestimulus baseline, stimulus-locked peak, sustained response, and recovery Was the signal transient, sustained, or tied to a particular event?
Behavior Accuracy, reaction time, omissions, and signs of disengagement Did greater dilation accompany successful effort, struggle, uncertainty, or withdrawal?
Control quality Matched luminance, stable fixation, blink handling, and baseline correction Could a visual or recording artifact explain the difference?
Interpretation Effort, arousal, uncertainty, surprise, salience, or light reflex Which explanation fits all of the measurements?

Within-person contrasts under matched visual conditions are preferred because age, ethnicity, and ambient-light differences can alter baseline pupil diameter. Naive comparisons of raw diameters between individuals can therefore mistake physiological variation for a difference in mental workload.

Important confounds and failure modes

Light and visual design

The most direct confound is luminance. A brighter screen, a white flash, or a change in contrast can alter the pupil independently of cognition. Control the room and display, record the relevant luminance values, and keep the visual field comparable between conditions.

Blinks, gaze loss, and motion

Blinks temporarily obscure the pupil. Poor tracking, eyelid occlusion, head movement, and gaze shifts can create sharp, nonphysiological changes. A study should state how those segments were identified and whether they were interpolated or excluded. Stable fixation reduces, but does not eliminate, these problems.

Arousal, emotion, surprise, and uncertainty

Pupils respond to more than mental workload. Emotional stimulation, salience, surprise, uncertainty, and general arousal can all enlarge the response. A participant who is startled by an unexpected event may dilate even when the event requires little reasoning.

Physical and motor effort

Movement and motor preparation can influence autonomic activity. If one condition requires more physical action, the pupil difference cannot be assigned solely to memory or attention without additional controls.

Individual and session differences

Baseline diameter varies across people and can change with illumination, fatigue, medication, age, and other physiological factors. The 2018 effort review specifically cautions that age, ethnicity, and ambient-light differences can distort individual-difference claims. Normalize within participant where possible and describe the population and testing conditions.

What pupil dilation cannot tell you

  • It cannot prove that someone was paying attention at every moment.
  • It cannot measure intelligence or motivation.
  • It cannot diagnose mental workload from a universal millimeter threshold.
  • It cannot identify a unique cause when effort, uncertainty, surprise, emotion, and light changed together.
  • It cannot replace behavioral performance or a broader assessment when a high-stakes decision is involved.

A 2021 meta-analysis of the Index of Cognitive Activity reported contradictory workload findings and detected influences from light. That result is a reminder that practical reliability depends on the task, implementation, and controls rather than on the existence of a pupil-based metric alone.

How to report a pupil-based workload finding

A clear report names the participant group, task manipulation, lighting conditions, baseline interval, preprocessing rules, analysis window, and behavioral outcomes. It should say whether the result is a within-person condition difference or a between-person association. It should also identify plausible alternatives: for example, a larger response may reflect uncertainty or surprise if those were not separated from task demand.

Use calibrated language such as “pupil-linked arousal increased” or “the higher-load condition elicited a larger baseline-corrected TEPR.” Reserve stronger conclusions for cases where pupil, behavior, gaze, and another independent measure converge.

Bottom line

Pupil dilation is most useful as a time-resolved, indirect indicator of effort and arousal. Under matched visual conditions, a larger task-evoked response often accompanies greater cognitive demand, but it does not by itself reveal how much attention a person paid, how intelligent they are, or whether they performed well. The meaningful unit is the controlled comparison: baseline-corrected pupil change interpreted alongside lighting, timing, behavior, and competing explanations.
