What PS5 Jailbreaking Changes—and What It Means for Online Play and Updates

PS5 jailbreaking bypasses parts of Sony’s software security so a console can run code or software that Sony has not authorized. The immediate benefit is expanded control over a particular firmware version; the cost is losing the straightforward update path, risking compatibility with newer games, and accepting contractual, warranty, security and stability consequences.

There is no verified universal answer that a jailbroken PS5 will either be banned from PlayStation Network or continue working online normally. Your exact firmware, console revision, the game you want to play and Sony’s current service checks all matter.

What PS5 jailbreaking actually changes

A jailbreak uses one or more software vulnerabilities to bypass Sony’s normal authentication and security controls. On a supported system, an exploit can provide deeper access to the operating system, allowing unauthorised code, homebrew-style payloads or other software to run. That is fundamentally different from an ordinary setting or accessibility option: it changes the trust model on which the console’s system software is built.

The change is usually tied to a particular system-software build. A vulnerability that works on one firmware can be closed by a later update, and a different console revision may behave differently even when its version number looks the same. A jailbreak should therefore not be treated as a permanent feature of the hardware, a guaranteed reversible modification or a method that works on every PS5.

Installing an exploit also does not create a separate, supported operating mode. You remain responsible for deciding whether the console connects to Sony services, accepts future updates or runs software whose own licence terms prohibit modification. The practical decision is a trade-off between keeping a vulnerable firmware and preserving official compatibility.

Why firmware is the central trade-off

Every firmware decision affects several things at once. Retaining an older version may preserve access to a compatible exploit, while updating may be necessary for a new game, a game patch, a security fix or an online feature. The right choice depends on which of those priorities is most important to you.

Choice What you may gain What you may give up or risk
Keep the installed firmware Potential compatibility with an exploit that supports that exact build; continued access to any software already working offline Newer games, patches or features may require a later firmware; security and stability fixes are deferred
Install a newer official update Access to games and updates that set a higher minimum version; current security fixes and Sony’s supported configuration A later update can close the vulnerability and remove access to a jailbreak that depended on the earlier build
Use a modified console online No established, universal benefit; some users may try to retain network access Service eligibility, account and console access, software terms, privacy and system-integrity risks are uncertain

Do not update on the assumption that you can simply downgrade later. Sony’s licence restrictions specifically include downgrading and bypassing PS5 security or authentication, and an exploit may not exist for the version you want to return to.

What the reported Relapse support range means

Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026, that a jailbreak called Relapse supported PS5 firmware 7.00 through 13.60. The report described browser and kernel exploits that provide kernel read/write access and said the setup could load additional payloads such as etaHEN.

That range is a dated, secondary report—not a Sony compatibility guarantee or a promise that every console revision, region, edition or installed update will behave identically. Firmware support changes as new releases appear, and the report did not establish that Relapse is permanent, works on every PS5 model or remains available after an accidental update. Check the exact version on the individual console before making any decision, and treat old ranges as historical information rather than a current guarantee.

The Marvel’s Wolverine example

The same report illustrates why a version number matters. It said the disc release of Marvel’s Wolverine required firmware 13.40 and that its 1.001.005 update required 13.60. Users reportedly found that the corresponding digital-version update required firmware 14.00. If that account is accurate, a console kept within the reported 7.00–13.60 range could face a choice between retaining exploit compatibility and installing the firmware needed for a particular digital update.

This is an example, not a rule for all games. Publishers can assign different requirements to a base release, a patch, a disc build and a digital build, and those requirements can change. Read the requirement shown for the exact edition and update you intend to use.

Can you play online after jailbreaking a PS5?

There is no reliable yes-or-no answer established for every modified console. The available Sony documents describe prohibited conduct and possible remedies, but they do not publish a universal process saying that every jailbreak automatically triggers a PlayStation Network suspension or console ban.

Sony’s US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement covers firmware, patches, updates, upgrades and new versions. It prohibits modifying system software, bypassing security or authentication, downgrading and exploiting system software outside authorised use. If Sony Interactive Entertainment determines that a user violated the agreement, it reserves measures that can include disabling access to software or disabling the console’s online or offline use. That is a contractual remedy Sony says it may take, not proof that the same penalty is imposed automatically in every case.

Online access also involves more than the console’s ability to reach a server. A game’s own software licence may impose separate conditions on online and multiplayer features. Sony’s Software Application EULA prohibits unauthorised game hacks or mods, including modifications intended to gain an unfair advantage online or in multiplayer. Using a modified system to cheat is therefore a distinct and especially risky form of conduct; it should not be confused with the unresolved question of how Sony treats every jailbreak that remains offline.

What can be stated with confidence

  • A jailbroken console is outside Sony’s authorised software configuration.
  • Sony reserves the ability to restrict software or console use if it determines that its terms were violated.
  • The reviewed material does not establish a universal ban trigger, standard suspension duration or guaranteed online method for jailbroken PS5 systems.
  • Online, multiplayer and updated features can have additional terms imposed by the game or application publisher.

In practical terms, anyone who needs dependable multiplayer, account services or digital-library access should regard online operation on a modified console as uncertain rather than as a feature to count on.

Will updating a PS5 remove the jailbreak?

It can. Official updates commonly include security changes, and Sony says updates may contain measures that prevent unauthorised content or hardware/software use. If a jailbreak relies on a vulnerability in the old build, installing a newer build can close that path. Even if the exploit code remains on storage, it may no longer execute against the updated system.

Sony’s support guidance recommends installing the latest system software promptly for security and proper operation. The company also notes that some applications or content require an update. Following that advice generally moves a console away from an older exploit-dependent state; declining updates preserves the possibility of compatibility only when the exact firmware remains supported.

An update can also be initiated by a game or by a disc that requires later system software. An on-screen update notice is not evidence that the game will run on the current firmware, and cancelling it does not make the newer requirement disappear. Before accepting an update, decide whether access to the specific game or service is more important than retaining the current exploit option.

Can you play new games without updating?

Only when the game’s minimum firmware is no higher than the version installed on your console and the title does not require a later patch for the features you need. There is no general method that makes every new release work on an older system. A base disc may run while a later update does not, or a digital edition may set a different requirement from a disc build.

The reported Wolverine case shows the practical problem: a disc build was reported at 13.40, its 1.001.005 update at 13.60, and the same digital-version update at 14.00. A console held below 14.00 might therefore run one form of the game but not the digital update described in that report. Because these are secondary-source, time-specific claims, verify the requirement for your own edition rather than treating those numbers as permanent industry standards.

Before buying or updating a game

  1. Record the console’s exact system-software version and model or revision.
  2. Identify whether you are using a disc or digital edition.
  3. Check the base game’s minimum firmware and the minimum firmware for the update you want.
  4. Separate essential features—story mode, patches, multiplayer and downloadable content—so you know which requirement actually matters.
  5. Make the firmware decision before allowing an automatic system or game update.

What Sony says about modified consoles

Sony’s UK support guidance warns that an altered or modified console might not operate properly or be able to install official update data. It says such actions can void the system warranty and affect warranty or repair services. That warning is broader than a network ban: a console can lose support or fail to update even when no account suspension has been documented.

Sony also recommends its latest system software for security and proper operation. The company’s wording is direct: “SIE strongly recommends always installing the latest update as soon as possible after the update is released.” This is an official support recommendation, not a statement that every owner must update regardless of their priorities.

If Sony’s terms are breached, the agreement reserves remedies that may disable software or console use online or offline. Because the agreement describes what Sony may do rather than publishing enforcement statistics, avoid assuming either guaranteed immunity or guaranteed punishment.

The official USB update or reinstall path

Sony documents an official maintenance procedure using a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The drive must contain the prescribed PS5/UPDATE folder and Sony’s required update file name. This procedure is for installing or reinstalling official system software; it is not a jailbreak tool and is not a method for preserving exploit access.

  1. Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
  2. Create the folder structure Sony specifies: PS5/UPDATE.
  3. Place the official system-software file in that folder with Sony’s prescribed name.
  4. Connect the drive to the PS5 and choose the system-software update or reinstall option shown by the console.
  5. If you choose reinstall, understand that Sony’s procedure deletes console data. Back up anything you are entitled and able to preserve before starting.

A reinstall returns the console to Sony’s official maintenance path; it should not be described as a way to keep a jailbreak. If a modified system cannot install official update data, the support warning itself is a reason to plan for possible repair or data-loss consequences before changing software.

1. Is the exact firmware supported?

Compare the full version number—not merely the major release—with current reporting for your exact console revision. A past range such as 7.00–13.60 does not prove that a different build or later release is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Which games and updates are essential?

List the titles, patches and downloadable features you actually need. Check each minimum firmware requirement and distinguish disc from digital editions.

3. Do you depend on online services?

If multiplayer, cloud-connected features, account services or a digital library are essential, the uncertainty of a modified console may outweigh the benefit of retaining an exploit. No source establishes dependable PSN access after jailbreaking.

4. Can you accept support and security consequences?

Consider the possibility of failed official updates, reduced repair eligibility, a voided warranty, instability and exposure to untrusted code. Keep important data backed up through methods available to your setup, without assuming that a backup can restore an unsupported firmware state.

5. Are you prepared to stay with the decision?

Installing a later firmware can close the exploit; refusing it can block a game or service. Make the choice before an automatic update, and do not assume a downgrade will be available or authorised.

Common situations and the safest interpretation

You updated and the jailbreak no longer works

That outcome is consistent with a patched vulnerability. Do not assume the exploit can be restored by deleting files or repeating the original trigger. Verify the installed version and consult current, model-specific information before taking any further action.

A disc asks for an update before launching

The notice means the disc or its required software has a higher system requirement than the console currently meets. Accepting it may remove exploit compatibility; declining it may leave the game or its patch unavailable.

The console will not install an official update

Sony specifically warns that modified systems might be unable to install official update data. Use only Sony’s documented maintenance process, and recognise that a reinstall can erase console data and may require repair support if the system remains unusable.

You want to use cheats or modified files online

Do not. Sony’s application terms prohibit unauthorised hacks or mods intended to gain an unfair advantage in online or multiplayer play. That conduct creates a separate terms violation and can harm other players.

Bottom line for online play and updates

Jailbreaking trades Sony’s supported software path for control over a firmware-specific environment. The reported Relapse range of 7.00–13.60 shows why version choice matters, while the reported 14.00 requirement for one digital game update shows how quickly new content can exceed an exploit’s range. Updating may restore game, security and service compatibility but can close the jailbreak; staying back may preserve an exploit option but leave newer content, official support and reliable online access uncertain. Sony’s rules and support warnings make the risks contractual and practical, not merely technical.
