What Prolonged Drought Means for Tropical Forest Biodiversity

Prolonged drought can kill trees, slow growth, and change which species dominate a tropical forest. Because trees create canopy layers, food, nesting sites, shade, and other habitat, those changes can spread through the wider ecosystem. The direction and size of the biodiversity response are not the same everywhere: drought intensity, heat, fire, soil, forest type, and land-use pressure all matter.

The clearest evidence concerns trees, forest structure, and ecosystem function. Effects on birds, mammals, insects, fungi, and microbes may follow through altered habitat and resources, but scientists cannot assume that every group responds in the same way.

What happens to a tropical forest during a prolonged drought?

A long period with unusually little available water creates stress at several levels. Individual trees may grow less, suffer damage, or die. Selective mortality then changes the forest’s species mix, canopy structure, and regeneration. Those physical changes alter conditions for other organisms.

Water stress constrains growth and survival

When soil water falls, trees have less water available for maintaining tissues and growth. The result depends on each species’ traits, its root access to moisture, local soil and water-table conditions, and the severity and duration of the dry period. A tree in a deep-soil location may experience a different water deficit from one on a shallow or drought-prone site during the same regional drought.

Growth reductions are important even when trees survive. Slower growth can delay reproduction and replacement of canopy trees, while repeated drought can reduce the supply of new individuals entering the forest. A short drought may produce a temporary physiological response; a prolonged or repeated drought can alter the trajectory of the whole community.

Mortality is selective, not random

Drought does not remove every species at the same rate. Larger trees can experience higher mortality in some tropical-forest studies. Other studies have found greater vulnerability among softwood, pioneer, or evergreen types during extreme drought. A recent Amazon study highlighted fast-growing, low-wood-density pioneer species under intense hot drought.

These are patterns from particular settings, not a universal list of species destined to disappear. A trait that is advantageous in one environment can become a liability in another, and rooting depth or access to persistent water can change the outcome. Selective death therefore changes the relative abundance of species and functional traits rather than producing one identical “drought community” everywhere.

Canopy change creates biodiversity cascades

When trees die or grow more slowly, gaps can open in the canopy, shade can decline, and temperature and humidity near the forest floor can change. These shifts affect seedlings and competing plants and can alter the resources and shelter available to animals and decomposers. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) describes drought-related tropical-tree mortality as capable of changing forest community structure and composition, with cascading effects on biodiversity.

A cascade is not the same as a proven, uniform decline in every taxon. The strongest general evidence is for trees and forest structure. Responses of birds, mammals, insects, fungi, and microbes require measurements for those groups or a clearly demonstrated habitat pathway.

Why drought responses differ among tropical forests

“Tropical forest” covers a wide range of climates and soils. A moist lowland forest, a seasonally dry forest, and a fragmented forest edge can face very different water conditions during a drought.

Moist and dry forests start from different baselines

Species in seasonally dry forests may possess traits that help them tolerate regular water shortages, while species from wetter forests may be less prepared for an unusually severe dry spell. Yet drought tolerance is not a simple label. The IPCC synthesis reports cases in which drought-tolerant species gain an advantage, while other traits or rooting strategies become vulnerable depending on water availability and soil conditions.

Soil, topography, and water tables matter

Soil depth, texture, drainage, and access to groundwater influence how long water remains available to roots. Ridges, slopes, valleys, and low-lying areas can therefore experience different levels of stress within the same forest. Comparing two sites without accounting for those features can make a local result look like a tropical-wide rule.

Heat and atmospheric dryness amplify drought

Natural “hot droughts” combine low rainfall with high temperatures and high atmospheric demand for water. That combination is not equivalent to an experiment that simply excludes rainfall. Heat can intensify physiological stress, so a mortality pattern observed during a hot drought should not automatically be attributed to reduced rainfall alone.

Fire, fragmentation, and deforestation add pressure

Prolonged drought can increase fire danger in tropical forests. Fire can kill trees directly and change composition and biodiversity in ways that differ from drought alone. Fragmentation and deforestation can expose edges to hotter, drier conditions and provide ignition sources. When these pressures coincide, the resulting biodiversity change cannot be assigned to drought as an isolated cause.

What the IPCC says about tropical-forest biodiversity and drought

The IPCC’s 2022 assessment states that climate change is altering tropical tree community structure and species composition with high confidence. It also warns that drought-related mortality can produce cascading biodiversity effects. Its summary is deliberately cautious: drought mortality shows complex patterns rather than one predictable response.

Tropical forests represent about 45% of the world’s forested areas, according to the IPCC, and they hold a major share of terrestrial biomass and biodiversity. Their carbon response provides useful context but is not a direct measure of species loss. The assessment reports a projected decline in the pan-tropical forest carbon sink from a peak of 1.26 petagrams of carbon per year in the 1990s to 0.29 petagrams per year in the 2030s, summarizing Hubau and colleagues’ 2020 work. That figure concerns the rate at which forests absorb carbon, not the number of species present.

The practical implication is that carbon, biomass, tree diversity, and animal diversity are related but distinct measurements. A forest can continue storing carbon while losing particular species, and a change in carbon uptake does not by itself quantify biodiversity change.

What the long-running Caxiuanã experiment shows

The Caxiuanã precipitation-exclusion experiment in the eastern Amazon has operated for more than 20 years on a one-hectare plot scale. It removes rainfall from part of the forest to examine the consequences of sustained soil-moisture reduction. Its unusually long duration reveals adjustment that a short experiment would miss.

Early mortality was substantial

During roughly the first 15 years, mortality was elevated under rainfall exclusion. That early loss changed the stand’s structure and reduced the population of trees that had been most vulnerable to the imposed water stress.

Later stability reflected structural change

After that initial period, the remaining forest showed ecosystem-level structural changes and no longer displayed the same drought-stress indicators as before. The altered structure reduced the stress experienced by surviving trees, producing a form of eco-hydrological stability.

Stability did not preserve the original forest

The same study found costs: biomass and wood-carbon accumulation were reduced. The forest had adjusted to the treatment, but it was not unchanged and had not simply returned to its starting condition. “Resilience” in this context means that some ecosystem processes became more stable after mortality and reorganization; it does not mean that all original species, biomass, or productivity were retained.

Caxiuanã is one eastern-Amazon site and manipulates soil moisture in a controlled way. A natural hot drought also includes atmospheric heat and vapor-pressure deficit. The experiment is therefore evidence of one possible long-term pathway, not a universal forecast for every tropical forest.

How prolonged drought changes species composition

Loss of vulnerable trees shifts relative abundance

If drought kills some species more often than others, the surviving community contains a different mix of traits. A reduction in large or vulnerable trees can lower the representation of those species in the canopy and leave more space for drought-tolerant or less-affected species.

Regeneration determines whether the shift persists

Adult mortality alone does not determine the future forest. Seed production, seedling survival, competition in new gaps, and the availability of suitable moisture determine which species replace dead trees. A species may persist as scattered adults but lose its long-term position if its seedlings cannot establish during recurring dry periods.

Canopy structure changes habitat

Selective mortality can produce more gaps, a shorter or more open canopy, or a different arrangement of foliage. Those structural changes influence light, humidity, temperature, and food resources. They provide plausible pathways for effects on animals and other organisms, but the magnitude and direction must be measured for each taxon and location.

Comparing drought studies without treating them as one result

Evidence setting Drought exposure Main response measured What it can show Important limitation
Caxiuanã, eastern Amazon More than 20 years of experimental rainfall exclusion on a one-hectare scale Tree mortality, forest structure, drought indicators, biomass, and wood-carbon accumulation How a forest can reorganize after early mortality and reach greater eco-hydrological stability One site and a soil-moisture manipulation; not a complete model of natural hot drought
Recent Amazon hot-drought study Intense drought combined with high heat and atmospheric dryness Vulnerability associated with growth rate and wood density Why fast-growing, low-wood-density pioneer species can be vulnerable under severe hot drought Trait patterns are context-specific and should not be generalized to every forest
IPCC tropical-forest synthesis Observed and projected climate stress across varied tropical forests Mortality, community structure, composition, fire, and biodiversity pathways Evidence that drought can alter tree communities and produce cascading biodiversity effects It synthesizes many settings rather than predicting one local species outcome

A sound comparison keeps five questions together: how long and severe the drought was; whether it was experimental or natural; what forest and soil conditions applied; which biological response was measured; and whether heat, fire, fragmentation, or deforestation were also present.

Can tropical forests recover after a long drought?

Recovery depends on what is meant by “recover.” A forest may regain some canopy cover or stabilize water-use indicators while remaining different in species composition, biomass, and carbon accumulation. Caxiuanã demonstrates this distinction: structural adjustment reduced later drought stress, but accumulated biomass and wood carbon were lower.

Short-term physiological recovery

After rainfall returns, surviving trees may resume growth and normal stress indicators may decline. That response says little about trees already killed, lost regeneration, or altered species proportions.

Decadal community recovery

Replacing large canopy trees requires seed sources, successful recruitment, and years to decades of growth. Repeated droughts can interrupt that process. A forest that appears green again may therefore have a different age structure or trait composition.

Recovery can be blocked by compounding disturbances

Fire, new drought, edge exposure, or continued deforestation can prevent the community from following a recovery pathway. The more disturbances overlap, the less useful it is to describe the outcome as drought recovery alone.

What scientists should measure when assessing biodiversity effects

No single metric captures the response. A robust assessment separates immediate stress from long-term community change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Mortality: which species, sizes, and functional types die, and when.
  • Growth: whether surviving trees lose growth before, during, or after the drought.
  • Regeneration: seedling and sapling abundance, survival, and species identity.
  • Composition: changes in species proportions and functional traits in the canopy and understory.
  • Structure: canopy height, gap formation, stem-size distribution, and biomass.
  • Hydrology: soil moisture, rooting depth, water-table access, and local topography.
  • Co-occurring pressures: heat, atmospheric dryness, fire, fragmentation, and deforestation.
  • Taxon-specific responses: direct surveys of animals, fungi, or microbes rather than assumptions based only on trees.

Following these measures across multiple years distinguishes a temporary stress response from a persistent change in biodiversity and ecosystem function.

What prolonged drought means for conservation decisions

The evidence supports treating drought as a community-level risk, not only a tree-health problem. Protecting intact forest reduces fragmentation-related drying and preserves seed sources and habitat as conditions change. Limiting ignition and fire spread matters because drought and fire can reinforce one another. Monitoring should focus on mortality, regeneration, and composition, not just whether a forest still looks green from above.

Managers should also avoid assuming that a drought-tolerant species mix in one forest can be transplanted as a universal forecast. Local soils, water access, forest history, and the presence of heat or fire determine which traits are favored. Plans that track only carbon or total tree cover can miss losses of particular species and structural features important to other organisms.

The central takeaway

Prolonged drought can reduce tropical-forest biodiversity by increasing selective tree mortality, slowing growth and regeneration, and restructuring the habitats on which other organisms depend. Some forests may reorganize and become more stable after the most vulnerable trees are lost, but that stability can come with lower biomass, reduced wood-carbon accumulation, and a community that no longer matches the original one. Because tropical forests differ so widely, the credible answer is conditional: drought changes biodiversity risk, but its exact direction and magnitude depend on forest setting, drought characteristics, heat, fire, and land-use pressure.
