Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) produced most of the universe’s helium-4 before expansion and cooling stopped the reactions. The Particle Data Group’s 2026 recommendation is a helium-4 mass fraction of Yp = 0.245 ± 0.003—about one quarter of ordinary matter by mass.
That abundance agrees with hot-Big-Bang calculations and therefore tests the early universe’s expansion, particle content and baryon conditions. It is not, by itself, a direct clock for the universe’s age or a unique proof of every detail of cosmology. Astronomers infer it from helium and hydrogen emission in extremely metal-poor gas, then correct for later stellar enrichment and measurement systematics.

What “primordial helium” means
Primordial helium is helium made during Big Bang nucleosynthesis, the brief era when the newly expanding universe was hot and dense enough for light nuclei to form. It is different from helium produced later inside stars. Stellar nuclear fusion adds helium to gas along with heavier elements, so present-day clouds do not automatically preserve the original composition.

The main primordial product is helium-4, whose nucleus contains two protons and two neutrons. BBN also made much smaller amounts of deuterium, helium-3 and lithium-7. These light elements are called “primordial” when their abundance is attributed to those early reactions rather than to stellar processing.

NASA’s overview places the key transition within minutes: “After five minutes, most of today’s helium had formed, and the universe had expanded and cooled enough that further element formation stopped.” NASA Science, Overview: Big Bang and Nucleosynthesis describes this cooling and expansion sequence. The universe continued evolving, but the conditions needed to build substantial quantities of heavier nuclei were no longer present.
How much helium did the Big Bang make?
The standard quantity is the primordial helium-4 mass fraction, written Yp. The Particle Data Group’s 2026 review recommends:
| Quantity | Current value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Primordial helium-4 mass fraction, Yp | 0.245 ± 0.003 | About 24.5% of the mass in primordial hydrogen-plus-helium material, with the quoted uncertainty |
| Common shorthand | “About 25% helium” | A mass statement, not a percentage of atoms |
| Measurement status | Recommended value | An inference from metal-poor extragalactic H II regions, not a sample collected from the first minutes |
The recommendation and its methods are given in the Particle Data Group’s 2026 Big Bang Nucleosynthesis review. Saying that helium makes up roughly a quarter of the universe’s ordinary matter by mass is therefore reasonable, provided the mass qualification is retained.

Yp is not the same as the number ratio of helium atoms to hydrogen atoms. A helium-4 atom has about four times the mass of a hydrogen nucleus, so a mass fraction and an atom-count fraction cannot be interchanged. Scientific papers usually report the mass fraction after converting measured helium-to-hydrogen line intensities into an abundance and applying the relevant corrections.
How Big Bang nucleosynthesis produced helium
In the earliest phase, weak interactions kept neutrons and protons in a changing balance while the universe expanded. As expansion reduced the temperature and reaction rates, that balance stopped tracking equilibrium. The surviving neutrons were then incorporated mainly into helium-4 once nuclear reactions could proceed efficiently.

This sequence explains why helium is such a sensitive fossil. Its yield depends on how many neutrons were available, how quickly the universe expanded while light nuclei were forming, and how long neutrons survived. The standard calculation also depends on the baryon-to-photon ratio and the effective number of relativistic species, usually denoted Neff. The detailed dependencies are summarized in the statistical reanalysis by Husain, de Grijs and Bono and in the PDG review.
BBN does not make the periodic table. Once the universe cools, the chain of reactions that efficiently builds helium and the other light nuclei largely stops. Much heavier elements require stars, supernovae and other later astrophysical processes. The large primordial helium fraction is therefore a record of a short nuclear episode, not evidence that all elements formed at the same time.
How scientists determine the primordial abundance
No telescope can look back and collect an untouched container of gas from the first five minutes. Instead, astronomers observe nearby environments that have undergone as little stellar chemical enrichment as possible and reconstruct the original value.
1. Observe ionized, metal-poor gas
The preferred targets are extragalactic H II regions, often in blue compact galaxies. Young stars ionize these clouds, causing hydrogen and helium to emit characteristic recombination lines. Their low metallicity is useful because metals are signs of previous stellar generations, which also tend to raise the helium content.
2. Measure hydrogen and helium emission lines
Researchers compare helium recombination-line strengths with hydrogen lines. The raw line ratio is not yet Yp: electron temperature, electron density, dust reddening, stellar absorption beneath the emission lines and collisional excitation all affect the observed spectrum.

3. Apply physical and atomic corrections
Analyses use atomic recombination and collisional coefficients, estimate the gas temperature and density, and correct for reddening and underlying stellar helium absorption. The Particle Data Group notes that the infrared He I 10830 Å line is especially useful for constraining electron density and reducing a temperature–density degeneracy.
4. Extrapolate to zero metallicity
Because stars make additional helium as they make metals, scientists measure a sample spanning different metallicities and fit the helium trend. Extrapolating that relation toward zero metallicity gives an estimate of the abundance before stellar enrichment: Yp.
5. Compare independent inputs
The inferred value is then compared with BBN calculations that use nuclear rates, the neutron lifetime, the baryon-to-photon ratio and assumptions about relativistic particles. This separates observational uncertainty in the nebulae from uncertainty in the early-universe model.
Why the measurement is difficult
The uncertainty in Yp is not determined only by the number of spectra. The physical conditions inside an H II region can bias a result if they are modeled incorrectly.
- Temperature structure: different zones can have different electron temperatures, while an analysis may rely on a simplified temperature estimate.
- Electron density: density changes the strengths of some helium lines and can be difficult to determine from optical data alone.
- Reddening: dust dims and reshapes emission lines by different amounts at different wavelengths.
- Underlying stellar absorption: starlight beneath the nebular emission can make helium lines appear weaker.
- Atomic data: recombination and collisional coefficients enter directly into the conversion from line intensity to abundance.
- Metallicity correction: the zero-metallicity intercept depends on which regions are included and how the trend is fitted.
The PDG characterizes systematic effects as the dominant limitation in the current inference. Statistical reanalysis also matters. Husain, de Grijs and Bono examined 143 reported primordial-helium determinations published from the late 1960s through 2022. Their 2026 study finds long-term convergence, but notes that many studies reanalyze or partly reuse a limited number of underlying datasets. Agreement among published values is therefore strong evidence of a stable result, not 143 wholly independent experiments.

The key test is whether the abundance inferred from ancient-looking gas matches the abundance predicted for a hot, expanding universe. It does within the stated uncertainties. That agreement supports the basic picture in which the universe was once much hotter and denser and then expanded and cooled.
Helium is sensitive to several early conditions:
- Baryon-to-photon ratio: the amount of ordinary matter relative to radiation affects nuclear reaction outcomes.
- Neutron lifetime: a longer or shorter neutron survival time changes how many neutrons remain available for helium formation.
- Expansion rate: faster expansion leaves less time for some reactions and changes the neutron-to-proton balance.
- Relativistic species: additional light particles would increase the early energy density, generally speeding expansion and shifting the predicted helium yield.
These dependencies make primordial helium a quantitative consistency check rather than a decorative detail of the Big Bang story. A substantial mismatch could point to incorrect nuclear inputs, unrecognized astrophysical systematics or physics beyond the standard particle content and expansion history.
Helium, the cosmic microwave background and Neff
Helium is most powerful when combined with other observations. Primordial deuterium probes related BBN physics; the cosmic microwave background (CMB) records conditions hundreds of thousands of years later; and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) measure large-scale cosmic distances. Agreement across these data sets tests the same broad cosmological framework at different epochs.

It reported:
Best Value
| Constraint | Result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Effective relativistic species, Neff | 2.990 ± 0.070 at 68% confidence | Joint constraint from helium, deuterium, CMB and BAO inputs |
| Extra contribution, ΔNeff | < 0.107 at 95% confidence | Upper limit on additional radiation-like energy under that combined analysis |
| Standard Model expectation | Neff = 3.044 | The reference prediction for the known light-particle content |
Those numbers are not a helium-only measurement. They come from the combined-data analysis published in Physical Review D. Keeping the data combination explicit prevents a common mistake: treating primordial helium as if it independently determines every cosmological parameter with high precision.
What primordial helium does not tell us by itself
| Question | What helium can say | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Was the early universe hot and dense? | The measured light-element yield agrees with hot-Big-Bang nucleosynthesis. | It is not a standalone proof of every part of the cosmological model. |
| How old is the universe? | It constrains conditions during the first minutes. | Yp is not a direct age measurement. |
| How much ordinary matter exists? | It responds to the baryon-to-photon ratio. | Helium alone is chiefly a consistency probe, not a precise baryon-density determination. |
| Are all published values independent? | Many analyses converge on a similar range. | Some reuse the same spectra or underlying data sets. |
A single intergalactic-gas measurement reported in 2018 has a much larger uncertainty than the current recommended abundance, so it should not be presented as the leading precision estimate. The modern value rests on the broader, corrected H II-region literature and its systematic-error analysis.
Why there is so much helium in the universe
The roughly quarter-by-mass helium fraction follows from the early neutron supply and the timing of cosmic expansion. Once nuclear reactions became effective, most surviving neutrons ended up bound in the especially stable helium-4 nucleus. The universe cooled before reactions could convert all remaining hydrogen into helium, leaving a mixture dominated by hydrogen with a substantial helium component.

Later stars continue to make helium, but that process changes the composition locally and gradually. Astronomers therefore use the least chemically evolved regions to estimate the starting point and then distinguish primordial helium from stellar additions.
How to read the current evidence
The strongest conclusion is a layered one:
- BBN predicts a helium-4 yield from specified early-universe conditions.
- Low-metallicity H II regions provide an observational route to the pre-stellar abundance.
- After corrections and a zero-metallicity extrapolation, the recommended value is Yp = 0.245 ± 0.003.
- The result agrees with other light-element, CMB and large-scale-structure tests, while remaining sensitive to systematic errors.
That chain makes primordial helium one of cosmology’s most important cross-checks. It links a measurable spectral signature in distant gas to nuclear reactions that occurred minutes after the universe began expanding, while also placing quantitative limits on changes to the particle content or expansion history.
