Voyager 1 is powered by three plutonium-238 radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs), not solar panels. They convert heat from radioactive decay into electricity, but their output falls by about 4 watts per year. NASA is therefore shutting down heaters, systems and instruments in stages. As of April 17, 2026, Voyager 1’s magnetometer and plasma wave subsystem were operating; NASA’s estimates suggest at least one science instrument could continue into the 2030s, although failures or further power constraints could shorten that outlook.
What powers Voyager 1?
Voyager 1 gets its electricity from three Multi-Hundred Watt radioisotope thermoelectric generators, commonly called MHW-RTGs. The generators are mounted on a boom and connected electrically in parallel. Each contains plutonium-238 in oxide form.

As plutonium-238 decays, it emits alpha particles and produces heat. Thermoelectric converters use the temperature difference between the hot radioactive material and the colder surroundings to generate electrical power. There is no combustion, fuel pump or moving generator shaft. The process runs continuously as the plutonium decays.

Why Voyager 1’s available power keeps shrinking
The RTGs do not suddenly switch off. Their electrical output declines gradually as the plutonium-238 supply loses activity. NASA and JPL describe the decline as approximately 4 watts per year for each Voyager spacecraft.
That reduction matters because every spacecraft function draws from the same finite electrical budget. The radio, computers, heaters, attitude-control hardware and scientific instruments all compete for the remaining margin. Early in the mission, engineers could operate many systems at once. Decades later, the same spacecraft has to be managed so that essential functions remain within the shrinking supply.
Power loss is not the same as an immediate end to the mission. Engineers can reduce demand before the supply becomes too low. They have turned off heaters and other nonessential equipment, then retired scientific instruments in a planned order. Each shutdown creates room for the equipment that remains more valuable or more difficult to replace.
Which Voyager 1 instruments are still operating?
NASA’s instrument-status table, updated April 17, 2026, listed two active science instruments on Voyager 1: the magnetometer and the plasma wave subsystem.
| Instrument or subsystem | Status on April 17, 2026 | Relevant action or function |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetometer | On | Measures magnetic fields in the spacecraft’s environment |
| Plasma wave subsystem | On | Listens for plasma-wave signals |
| Cosmic ray subsystem | Off since February 25, 2025 | Shut down to save power |
| Low-energy Charged Particles experiment (LECP) | Off since April 17, 2026 | Shut down to save power |
These dates describe the recorded status at that update. They should not be read as a prediction that the two remaining instruments will operate unchanged until a particular future day.

What the remaining instruments measure
Magnetometer
The magnetometer measures magnetic fields. At Voyager 1’s distance from the Sun, those measurements help scientists examine the heliosphere and the interstellar environment beyond it. Keeping the instrument operating preserves a direct record of how magnetic conditions change as the spacecraft travels farther outward.
Plasma wave subsystem
The plasma wave subsystem detects and analyzes plasma-wave activity. NASA mission manager Kareem Badaruddin described it as the instrument “that listens to plasma waves.” Plasma-wave observations provide information about charged-particle conditions that cannot be obtained from a simple temperature or magnetic-field reading.

LECP measured low-energy charged particles, including ions, electrons and cosmic rays. NASA used its data to characterize the interstellar medium, including pressure fronts and changes in particle density.
NASA said shutting down LECP on April 17, 2026 was expected to provide about a year of additional breathing room. The instrument’s small scanning motor was left powered because it uses only 0.5 watts. That motor rotates the sensor so it can scan in different directions. Keeping it available preserves a possible route to reactivating the instrument if the power margin later improves, although reactivation is not guaranteed.
How long can Voyager 1 keep collecting science data?
NASA’s current outlook is expressed as a possibility, not a deadline. In March 2025, NASA/JPL said the Voyagers might have enough power to keep at least one science instrument operating into the 2030s. A NASA Heliophysics senior review described a potential mission extension through the mid-2030s through creative engineering.

Those statements concern science operations. They do not promise that Voyager 1 will retain both remaining instruments, and they do not establish an exact date when all science will stop. An unexpected hardware fault, a communications problem or a new power constraint could shorten the timeline. Conversely, a successful power-saving modification could preserve useful operations longer than a simple annual wattage calculation would suggest.

The phrase “into the 2030s” therefore means that at least one instrument could remain scientifically useful during part of that decade under favorable conditions. It is not a scheduled shutdown date and not a guarantee that the spacecraft will continue transmitting until the middle of the decade.
Science operation and communication are different lifetimes
“How long will Voyager 1 keep working?” has two answers depending on what working means.
- Science operation: instruments collect measurements and send them for analysis. NASA’s 2030s outlook applies primarily to this function.
- Spacecraft engineering and communications: onboard computers, attitude control, the radio system and ground communication links continue operating well enough to command the spacecraft and return data.
A science instrument can be shut down while the spacecraft continues communicating. That is exactly what happened when the cosmic ray subsystem and LECP were powered off. The reverse is also possible: a spacecraft might remain technically contactable while no science instrument can produce useful measurements. Estimates about one lifetime should not be presented as a precise forecast for the other.
What is the “Big Bang” power-saving change?
NASA/JPL reported on August 4, 2026 that a coordinated power-saving change nicknamed “Big Bang” had been completed on Voyager 2. Engineers turned off some powered devices and substituted lower-power alternatives while keeping the spacecraft warm enough to operate. NASA said the change should preserve Voyager 2’s three science instruments for at least an additional year.

The same update said the team planned to perform the change on Voyager 1 in the coming months. The latest authoritative information available for this article does not confirm that the Voyager 1 implementation was completed by October 13, 2026. It is therefore accurate to describe Voyager 1’s Big Bang work as planned, not as a completed upgrade.
If implemented successfully, the change could reduce demand without requiring another immediate instrument shutdown. It would still be a power-management measure, not a new energy source: the RTGs would continue to decline at roughly the same rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why NASA shuts down instruments instead of replacing the power system
Voyager 1 is operating in interstellar space, far beyond any practical servicing mission. Its RTGs, wiring, instruments and computers were launched in 1977 and cannot be replaced by a crew or a robotic repair vehicle. Engineers must work with commands sent across the enormous distance and with hardware that was never designed for modern software updates or component swaps.
That makes power rationing the realistic strategy. The team can change operating modes, disable heaters, select lower-power substitutes where available and turn off instruments in an order intended to preserve the most valuable measurements. Once an instrument is powered down, bringing it back may be impossible because of thermal conditions, mechanical wear, software limitations or an insufficient power margin.
Badaruddin summarized the trade-off this way: “While shutting down a science instrument is not anybody’s preference, it is the best option available.” He also said, “Voyager 1 still has two remaining operating science instruments — one that listens to plasma waves and one that measures magnetic fields.”

What could shorten or extend the timeline?
Factors that could shorten operations
- An unexpected failure in the power system, computer, transmitter, attitude-control hardware or another essential subsystem.
- A larger-than-planned reduction in usable electrical margin.
- Thermal problems after heaters or other protective equipment are switched off.
- A communications fault that prevents reliable commands or data return even if an instrument remains powered.
Factors that could extend useful science
- Additional low-power operating modes that reduce demand without disabling a science instrument.
- Successful application of the Big Bang-style changes to Voyager 1.
- Careful scheduling that powers instruments or heaters only when needed.
- Engineers finding ways to preserve a small operating margin for at least one instrument.
None of these possibilities changes the basic constraint: the RTGs supply less electrical power over time, and the spacecraft cannot receive a replacement generator.
What to expect next
The next meaningful updates are likely to concern power-saving commands, instrument status and communications health rather than a single announced “end date.” NASA can report that an instrument has been turned off, that a lower-power configuration has been applied or that an instrument remains usable. Those observed events are more reliable than converting a planning estimate into a calendar deadline.
For Voyager 1, the clearest status baseline is the April 17, 2026 instrument table: the magnetometer and plasma wave subsystem were on, while the cosmic ray subsystem and LECP were off. The August 2026 Big Bang report establishes that Voyager 2 received the change and that Voyager 1 was expected to receive it later, but it does not establish completion on Voyager 1.

Voyager 1 is powered by heat from decaying plutonium-238 in three RTGs. Those generators made about 158 electrical watts each at launch, and their output now declines by roughly 4 watts per year per spacecraft. NASA is preserving the mission by removing electrical loads in stages.
As of April 17, 2026, two science instruments remained active: the magnetometer and the plasma wave subsystem. NASA believes at least one instrument may continue operating into the 2030s, potentially through the mid-2030s with further engineering, but that is a conditional outlook. The spacecraft’s ability to communicate, and the ability of individual instruments to keep collecting data, may end at different times.
