EVGA’s PowerLink 52U arrangement is described as using five PCIe 8-pin plugs from the power supply and terminating in two 16-pin plugs for the card. That is the connection scheme to match when you build or re-cable a KINGPIN system.
The direct answer: two 16-pin inputs on the KINGPIN
Unlike many RTX 3090 Ti cards, the EVGA K|NGP|N Hybrid Gaming does not use one 16-pin input. Its PCB has two 16-pin auxiliary power sockets, as reported in the card’s July 2022 launch coverage by Hermitage Akihabara. Both inputs are part of the card’s intended power connection; leaving one disconnected is not the normal operating configuration.

The matching EVGA PowerLink 52U setup is described by TechSpot and XFastest News as a five-PCIe-8-pin-to-two-16-pin adapter. In practical terms, the power-supply side provides five 8-pin PCIe connections, while the graphics-card side provides two 16-pin plugs. Confirm the exact adapter and cable set before installation, because current stock, package contents and compatibility with a particular power supply are not established here.

The five 8-pin figure refers to the adapter’s PSU-side plugs, not to five sockets on the graphics card. The card itself still has two 16-pin sockets. Use the labels molded into the adapter and the card rather than relying on a photograph or a cable that merely looks similar.

Does the 3090 Ti KINGPIN need two 16-pin connectors?
Yes. The KINGPIN’s documented layout is two 16-pin connectors at the card. A single-16-pin cable or a three-8-pin adapter intended for another RTX 3090 Ti variant does not match that layout.
Do not confuse the PowerLink 52U with EVGA’s PowerLink 41s. EVGA’s official 41s product sheet says that accessory is designed exclusively for the RTX 3090 Ti FTW3 Series, whose power arrangement is different. A 41s or another one-connector accessory should not be assumed to fit or safely power a KINGPIN.
How the KINGPIN differs from other RTX 3090 Ti cards
Connector counts and PSU guidance are model-specific. The following comparison prevents the most common cable-count mistake: applying FTW3 or Founders Edition instructions to the KINGPIN.

The FTW3 manual’s recommendation is an 850 W-or-greater power supply with at least three PCIe 8-pin cables. NVIDIA lists 850 W required system power for the Founders Edition and notes that the figure depends on system configuration. Neither 850 W number is a verified KINGPIN requirement, and neither model’s one-connector cable arrangement can be substituted for the KINGPIN’s two-input design.
What the reported 1,600 W PSU bundle does—and does not—mean
Hermitage Akihabara’s July 2022 launch report said the KINGPIN package included an EVGA SuperNOVA 1600 P2 power supply. That is a historical bundle detail: 1,600 W was the capacity of the PSU included with that reported package.
It is not evidence that every KINGPIN build must use a 1,600 W supply. The cited KINGPIN material does not establish a formal minimum PSU wattage. Your complete system’s CPU, drives, pumps, fans, overclocking settings and transient behavior all affect PSU sizing, so select a unit based on the complete platform and the manufacturer documentation available for your exact card and power supply. Do not downgrade to a lower-capacity unit solely because another RTX 3090 Ti model lists 850 W, either: that number belongs to the FTW3 or Founders Edition guidance identified above.

How to connect a KINGPIN safely
1. Verify the card and adapter models
- Read the label on the graphics card and confirm it is the EVGA RTX 3090 Ti K|NGP|N Hybrid Gaming, not an FTW3 or another 3090 Ti.
- Count the sockets on the card. A genuine KINGPIN layout has two 16-pin auxiliary inputs.
- Check that the adapter is the EVGA PowerLink 52U type described for a five-8-pin-to-two-16-pin path. Do not substitute a PowerLink 41s, which EVGA identifies for FTW3 Series cards.
2. Check the power supply and leads
- Confirm that the PSU has the required number of compatible PCIe 8-pin outputs and the appropriate modular sockets. Never force a CPU/EPS cable into a PCIe socket.
- Use the cables supplied or explicitly approved for that PSU. Modular cables are not universally wired, even when their plugs look identical.
- Where the PSU manual permits it, use separate PCIe leads for the adapter’s 8-pin plugs rather than overloading one daisy-chained lead. Follow the PSU maker’s current limit and cable instructions.
- Inspect every plug for bent terminals, damaged insulation, looseness or debris before connecting it.
3. Attach the adapter to the card
- With the computer switched off and the PSU unplugged, route the adapter so that neither 16-pin plug is under side pressure.
- Insert both 16-pin connectors straight into the KINGPIN’s two sockets. Press until each connector is fully seated; an exposed gap or connector that can rock indicates an incomplete insertion.
- Keep the cable bend gentle near each plug. Do not fold the harness sharply against the connector housing or close the case panel on top of it.
4. Connect the PSU side
- Plug the adapter’s five PCIe 8-pin connectors into the PSU-side cables. Match the keyed shapes; a plug that needs force is the wrong plug or is misaligned.
- Check that every 8-pin latch has engaged and that no partially inserted plug is hidden behind the motherboard tray.
- Secure the card to the case so its weight does not pull the 16-pin connectors sideways.
5. Perform a power-on check
- Reconnect AC power and switch on the PSU. If the PSU clicks off immediately, smells hot or shows arcing, disconnect it and investigate rather than repeatedly cycling power.
- After booting, verify that the system recognizes the graphics card and that its monitoring software reports normal power and temperature behavior for your workload.
- Shut down and recheck the connectors if the card loses display output, crashes under load or shows any sign of connector heating.
Can you power the KINGPIN with PCIe 8-pin cables?
Yes, but the documented route is through an adapter that converts five PCIe 8-pin PSU connections into two 16-pin card connections. The 8-pin plugs connect to the power supply side of that adapter; they do not plug directly into the KINGPIN’s two 16-pin sockets.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Using a three-8-pin FTW3 adapter
Symptom: You have one 16-pin output or only three 8-pin PSU plugs. Fix: Stop and obtain the two-16-pin arrangement documented for the KINGPIN. The FTW3 adapter is for the FTW3, not this card.

Connecting only one 16-pin input
Symptom: A connector is left hanging or the system fails to start. Fix: Power down, install both 16-pin plugs fully and inspect the adapter and PSU leads for damage.
Assuming 1,600 W is mandatory
Symptom: You treat the launch-bundle PSU as a formal specification. Fix: Regard it as package context. Size the PSU for the complete system and the documentation for your exact hardware; no KINGPIN-specific minimum wattage is established in the cited material.

Forcing or sharply bending a connector
Symptom: The plug will not seat, the latch will not engage or the cable is pressed hard against the side panel. Fix: Remove power, realign the plug and create more routing space. Never force a keyed connector.
