What Pléiades Satellite Imagery Shows of Nepal’s 26 August 2026 Langtang Lirung Landslide

CNES Pléiades captured a clear-sky stereoscopic view of the Langtang Lirung landslide’s source area on 28 September 2026—more than a month after the disaster. The images show the scar near the glacier and large sediment deposits in the proglacial valley. Their stereo geometry also supports 3D terrain modelling, making this more than a conventional satellite snapshot.

What the Pléiades images show

In a post published on 1 October 2026, Simon Gascoin of CESBIO describes a landslide scar near the glacier and substantial sediment deposits in the proglacial valley. The acquisition covers the source area at 28.29°N, 85.52°E. These are visual observations from the imagery; the post does not report measured scar dimensions, deposit volume or a completed quantitative landslide inventory. Gascoin says that after multiple attempts, Pléiades obtained a clear-sky view. The post presents 3D visualizations of panchromatic imagery, rather than a final quantitative analysis of the landslide’s extent or runout.

When the image was taken—and why stereo matters

The Pléiades acquisition was made on 28 September 2026, following the landslide and flood of 26 August. It is therefore a post-event view, not an image of the slope before or during its failure. The CESBIO post says the stereoscopic acquisition enables researchers to generate a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) and, from it, a geometrically accurate orthorectified image. A stereo acquisition views the same terrain from different angles. That geometry provides depth information that a single flat image cannot: it can support a 3D representation of the ground and help correct terrain-related distortions in the image. CESBIO does not state the imagery’s spatial resolution, the DEM’s accuracy or measured landslide volumes, so those figures cannot be inferred from the post.

The acquisition request was led by Kristen Cook and Étienne Berthier under the ongoing CIEST2 programme, with the aim of providing scientific insight into the event.

How Pléiades fits the earlier satellite record

Other satellites supplied views closer to the event, but they are separate observations and do not provide the same late-September Pléiades stereo product. The European Space Agency (ESA) describes a Sentinel-2 before-and-after comparison and a shortwave-infrared comparison using Landsat-9 and Sentinel-2. ESA: Nepal flash flood imaged by satellites

Observation Acquisition timing What it contributes
Sentinel-2 12 and 27 August 2026, according to ESA Before-and-after visual context around the event.
Landsat-9 and Sentinel-2 Landsat-9 on 26 August, approximately two hours after the collapse; Sentinel-2 on 24 August, according to ESA A shortwave-infrared comparison. ESA notes these channels can help distinguish water and ice from clouds in a frequently cloud-covered mountain region.
CNES Pléiades 28 September 2026, according to CESBIO A later clear-sky stereoscopic view that supports DEM generation and accurate orthorectification.

The International Charter Space and Major Disasters and Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service were activated to provide imagery and geospatial information for response. ESA reports that the 26 August disaster followed a rapid slope failure associated with a glacier collapse on Langtang Lirung in Langtang National Park. Water, ice and debris travelled nearly 100 km downstream, devastating infrastructure along the Lende Kholā and Trishuli valleys. ESA, 31 August 2026

Do the pre-event images show warning signs?

Dave Petley’s 1 October 2026 Eos analysis examines Planet Labs images from 12 and 25 August—not the later Pléiades acquisition. He saw little obvious change at first glance, while noting possible movement of ice near the crown and increased rockfall activity on the midslope. Petley cautions that these changes may be difficult to distinguish from normal background activity; they do not establish a reliable warning signal. The images neither prove that the landslide was predictable nor prove that no precursors existed. Eos: Dave Petley on possible precursory indications

A separate EarthArXiv listing describes a preprint titled “No detectable precursor in Sentinel-1 backscatter before the 26 August 2026 Langtang Lirung rock–ice avalanche, Nepal.” It concerns radar-backscatter analysis, not the optical Planet Labs images discussed by Petley, and is identified as a preprint rather than peer-reviewed research. Its title alone should not be treated as settling whether precursors existed. EarthArXiv preprint listing

What the new view can—and cannot—establish

The stereo data give researchers a basis for examining terrain in 3D and producing a geometrically corrected image, while the visible scar and valley deposits help locate major features of the aftermath. The CESBIO post presents imagery and visualizations; it does not publish a final measurement of the landslide’s dimensions, volume or runout. Nor does a September view by itself establish what changed immediately before the August failure.
