What Pi-hole Can and Cannot Block: DNS Filtering Explained

Pi-hole can block many ad, tracker, telemetry, malware and nuisance hostnames for every device that actually uses it for DNS. It does this before a connection is made, so one installation can cover computers, phones, smart TVs and other network clients without installing software on each device.

It cannot reliably remove an ad that shares a hostname with wanted content, hide page elements, or control a device that bypasses Pi-hole with another DNS path, encrypted DNS, a VPN or a hard-coded endpoint. Understanding that boundary explains both Pi-hole’s strengths and the ads that still appear.

What Pi-hole is and how DNS blocking works

Pi-hole is a network-wide DNS sinkhole. When a client needs to contact example.com, it first asks a DNS resolver for the hostname’s IP address. If the client is configured to use Pi-hole, that lookup reaches Pi-hole instead. Pi-hole checks the hostname against its active blocklists and local rules.

  1. The device sends a DNS query to Pi-hole.
  2. Pi-hole compares the requested hostname with its blocklists, deny rules and regular-expression rules.
  3. If the hostname is blocked, Pi-hole refuses the lookup or returns a non-routable address.
  4. The application therefore cannot establish its normal connection to that hostname.
  5. If the hostname is allowed, Pi-hole forwards or resolves the query normally and the device connects.

Because the decision is made at the hostname level, the same rule can apply to many clients. The Pi-hole project describes this as protecting devices from unwanted content “without installing any client-side software.” A Raspberry Pi Ltd tutorial similarly describes ad blocking as acting as a DNS sinkhole. DNS filtering is therefore an upstream gate, not a browser rendering or content-editing system.

What Pi-hole can block

Ad and tracking hostnames

Pi-hole can block advertising and tracking domains that appear on the active lists you select. If a page, application or smart-TV service requests a separate hostname for an ad server, analytics endpoint or tracking service, Pi-hole can stop that request before the connection begins. The result is network-wide reduction of those requests rather than a filter installed separately in every browser.

Telemetry, malware and nuisance domains

Blocklists can include telemetry collectors, known malware infrastructure and other unwanted hostnames. The exact coverage depends on the lists and their current entries; Pi-hole does not identify every unwanted domain automatically. A list must contain the hostname, or you must add a local rule.

Repeated requests from many device types

Once a computer, phone, tablet, game console, smart TV or another DNS-using device is configured to use Pi-hole, repeated requests to blocked hostnames can be stopped across that device. This is useful for devices that do not support browser extensions, although the device must still honor the network’s DNS settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Domains you add yourself

Pi-hole lets you add hostnames to a denylist when a site or service is not covered by a downloaded list. Regex rules can match families of hostnames when a simple single-domain entry is insufficient. These controls are powerful but should be used carefully: a broad pattern can block a legitimate service that happens to share a naming structure.

What Pi-hole cannot block reliably

Ads and content sharing one hostname

DNS sees hostnames, not individual files, page elements or video segments. If an application delivers both the wanted content and its advertisement from the same hostname, blocking that hostname blocks both—or blocks neither. Pi-hole has no way to tell “this request is an ad” from “this request is the article, image or video” when both use the same destination.

This is the central reason DNS filtering cannot promise universal ad blocking. Services can also change hostnames, rotate infrastructure or use shared delivery systems, so a rule that works today may stop working after a service update.

Page-level and cosmetic changes

Pi-hole does not inspect a page’s HTML, remove an element from the layout, rewrite a response or hide an empty advertising slot. A browser content blocker operates after the page reaches the browser and can apply selectors and other page-specific rules. Pi-hole operates earlier, at name resolution, so it cannot perform those cosmetic tasks.

Clients that bypass Pi-hole

Coverage falls whenever a client does not send its DNS queries to Pi-hole. Common bypass paths include:

  • A manually configured secondary or alternative DNS server.
  • Encrypted DNS configured directly in a browser or operating system.
  • A VPN that sends DNS through its own resolver or tunnel.
  • An application that uses a hard-coded endpoint instead of the local resolver.
  • A separate router, access point or cellular connection that is outside the network where Pi-hole is installed.

Pi-hole can only filter the queries that reach it. A device may appear connected to your home network while still resolving names elsewhere, so a successful installation does not by itself prove that every client is covered.

Guaranteed blocking for a particular service

Streaming and app behavior changes over time, and many services use shared infrastructure for content and advertising. Pi-hole can block a service’s known advertising or tracking hostnames when those requests are separate, but it cannot provide a permanent, universal guarantee for a named service without current testing. Treat service-specific results as conditional on the service’s present DNS architecture and your clients’ configuration.

Why YouTube and in-app ads often remain

Video platforms and mobile applications frequently deliver advertising and wanted media through the same hostname or tightly shared infrastructure. A DNS rule broad enough to stop the ad may also stop the video, sign-in flow or application data. The service can also change hostnames without notice. In those situations Pi-hole has no safe hostname-only distinction to make, so some ads remain visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In-app advertising has an additional limitation: the application may use its own encrypted DNS, a VPN tunnel or a fixed endpoint. If the lookup never reaches Pi-hole, no local denylist can affect it. A browser-level content blocker can sometimes remove an element after it loads, but that is a different filtering layer and does not make the app’s DNS traffic pass through Pi-hole.

What determines your results

Blocklist coverage and quality

Lists determine which hostnames Pi-hole recognizes. A small, carefully maintained set may miss domains; a very broad collection may catch more unwanted traffic but also increase false positives, duplicate entries and maintenance work. Pi-hole’s documentation notes that list selection affects what is blocked. There is no single list that is complete for every region, device and service.

Allowlisting and recovery from false positives

When a legitimate login, payment, game or media function breaks, inspect Pi-hole’s query log to identify the denied hostname. Add only the required hostname to the allowlist, then retry the function. If the problem involves a pattern rule, narrow or remove that regex rather than allowing an entire related domain family. Record why an exception was added so it can be reviewed when the service changes.

The DNS path used by each client

Router-level configuration is convenient, but verify that clients receive Pi-hole as their DNS server and that no alternate path is being advertised. Devices with their own encrypted-DNS setting, VPN or manual resolver may need separate configuration. A client that leaves the network over cellular data is not using the home’s Pi-hole at all.

Layering with other filters

Pi-hole is strongest at stopping unwanted hostnames for many devices. A browser content blocker complements it by handling page-level and cosmetic filtering. Using both layers avoids asking DNS to do a job that requires access to the rendered page.

Pi-hole compared with browser blockers and other DNS services

Approach Filtering layer Device scope Bypass and setup considerations False-positive recovery
Pi-hole DNS hostname resolution Network clients configured to use Pi-hole Requires a DNS server on the network; clients using encrypted DNS, VPNs or alternate resolvers can bypass it Review the query log, then allowlist a hostname or narrow a regex rule
Browser content blocker Browser requests, page elements and cosmetic rules Supported browsers and profiles Must be installed and maintained per browser or device; does not automatically cover other apps Disable a rule or allow a site within the browser extension
Managed DNS service DNS hostname resolution Devices or networks using that provider’s resolver Configuration is delegated to the provider; local clients can still bypass the resolver Use the provider’s exception controls, when available

The choice is not necessarily either-or. Pi-hole provides local, network-wide hostname control; a browser blocker handles visual and page-specific work. A managed DNS resolver may reduce self-hosting, but its available lists, logs and exception controls depend on that service. In every case, the filtering layer determines what can be blocked.

Hardware and software requirements

Pi-hole is not limited to Raspberry Pi hardware. The prerequisites documentation calls for at least 512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of free storage, with 4 GB recommended. It supports actively maintained Linux distributions, including Raspberry Pi OS. You need persistent storage, reliable power and network connectivity for whichever computer hosts it.

  • A small always-on Linux computer or supported single-board computer.
  • At least 512 MB RAM.
  • At least 2 GB free storage; 4 GB is the documented recommendation.
  • A stable network connection and persistent storage.
  • Administrative access to configure the host and your router or clients.

A Raspberry Pi is a common self-hosting route, but check the current supported model and operating-system requirements before buying. A compatible small server, virtual machine or another maintained Linux host can also meet the prerequisites.

How to deploy Pi-hole for network-wide coverage

  1. Prepare the host. Install a currently maintained, supported Linux distribution on persistent storage. Connect the host to your network and provide dependable power.
  2. Install Pi-hole. Follow the project’s current installation procedure and record the web-admin credentials it provides.
  3. Give the host a stable address. Use a DHCP reservation on the router or a correctly configured static address so clients do not lose the resolver when the host’s address changes.
  4. Choose your upstream resolver. During setup, select an upstream DNS provider appropriate for your privacy and reliability requirements. Pi-hole still needs an upstream path for allowed domains.
  5. Set the router’s LAN DNS. In the router’s local-network or DHCP settings, enter the Pi-hole address as the DNS server distributed to clients. Apply the change and renew leases or reconnect devices.
  6. Check individual clients. Confirm that phones, computers, televisions and other important devices show the Pi-hole address as their DNS server. Disable device-level encrypted DNS or configure it to use the local resolver when your policy permits.
  7. Test a known blocked hostname. Use Pi-hole’s query log or a controlled test domain from your selected lists. The request should appear as blocked, and the client should fail to reach that hostname.
  8. Test an allowed service. Open ordinary websites and applications, then inspect the log for denied hostnames that explain any breakage. Add narrowly scoped exceptions only when necessary.

If the router cannot distribute a custom DNS server, configure supported clients individually. That approach takes more maintenance and leaves any unconfigured device outside Pi-hole’s coverage.

Maintaining lists, deny rules and allowlists

Start with a manageable set of reputable lists rather than enabling every list you find. Watch the query log after changes, especially when adding regex rules. When a service fails, identify the exact denied hostname, allow it temporarily, and verify whether the feature returns. Remove exceptions that are no longer needed.

Expect maintenance: domains change ownership, services consolidate infrastructure and lists update. A rule that blocks a tracker may later affect a login or update endpoint. Conversely, an old allowlist entry may leave a hostname unfiltered after a service redesign. Periodic review keeps the balance between coverage and usability.

Troubleshooting common failures

Nothing is being blocked

  • Confirm the client’s DNS address is Pi-hole, not the router’s upstream address or a public resolver.
  • Check that the relevant blocklist is enabled and has updated successfully.
  • Look for encrypted DNS, a VPN or a manually configured secondary resolver.
  • Verify that the test hostname is actually present in an active list or local deny rule.

A legitimate service stopped working

  • Search Pi-hole’s query log while reproducing the failure.
  • Identify the denied hostname required by that feature.
  • Allowlist that specific hostname, retry, and avoid broad wildcards unless the service documentation requires them.
  • If a regex rule caused the issue, narrow or remove the pattern.

Ads appear on one device but not another

Compare the devices’ DNS settings and network paths. The affected device may be using encrypted DNS, a VPN, cellular data or an application-specific resolver. Different applications can also request different hostnames, so one may be covered while another is not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A page has a blank space where an ad was

That is expected when Pi-hole blocks the ad hostname but cannot edit the page layout. A browser content blocker is required for cosmetic removal; Pi-hole has already performed its DNS-level job.

How much traffic can Pi-hole block?

A Raspberry Pi Ltd tutorial gives an example range of 10% to 50% of DNS queries blocked on many networks. This is an illustrative range, not a guaranteed result or a measurement for every household. Your percentage depends on the devices present, their applications, the lists enabled, regional services and how many clients actually use Pi-hole.

The practical boundary

Use Pi-hole when you want centralized hostname filtering across a network and are prepared to manage DNS settings and exceptions. Expect it to stop many separate ad, tracker, telemetry, malware and nuisance domains. Do not expect it to dissect a page, distinguish two resources sharing one hostname, or control clients that resolve names elsewhere. Pairing DNS filtering with an appropriate browser-level blocker, while monitoring the query log and maintaining precise allowlists, gives each layer a job it can perform reliably.
