Phone Hub connects an Android phone to a Chromebook so selected phone information and actions appear on the Chromebook. Google lists basic Phone Hub support for Chromebooks running ChromeOS M89 or later paired with Android 5.1 or later. Streaming phone apps is a separate, narrower feature: it requires a supported model, Android 13 or later on most listed devices, shared Wi-Fi, close proximity and additional permissions.
What Phone Hub is
Phone Hub is ChromeOS’s built-in control panel for a connected Android phone. Google describes it as a way to use selected phone features from the Chromebook screen rather than picking up the phone for every task. The connection is configured through ChromeOS and Android, and individual features can be enabled or disabled after setup.

Basic Phone Hub eligibility and app-streaming eligibility are not the same. A phone can meet the minimum Android version for Phone Hub yet be unable to stream apps. Treat app streaming as an additional compatibility check, not as an automatic part of every Phone Hub connection.
What you can do with Phone Hub
Check phone status
Phone Hub can show the connected phone’s cellular signal and battery status on the Chromebook. This is useful when the phone is in another room, charging in a bag or otherwise out of reach. The status display does not turn the Chromebook into a cellular device; it reports information from the paired phone.

Use quick phone controls
Google lists quick commands for enabling the phone’s hotspot, silencing the phone and locating it. Availability of a specific command can depend on the phone’s software and the permissions granted during setup. A locate command is intended to help find the paired phone; it does not replace Google’s full device-recovery tools for a lost or stolen device.
See Android Chrome tabs
Phone Hub can display tabs that are open in Chrome on the Android phone, allowing you to continue reading on the Chromebook. This is a handoff of browser activity, not a mirror of the entire phone display.
Manage notifications
Phone notifications can be synchronized to the Chromebook so you can view or respond to supported alerts without switching devices. Notification access is a permission-controlled feature. If you do not want phone alerts on the Chromebook, turn that feature off in the connected-phone settings while leaving other Phone Hub functions enabled.

Access recent photos and screenshots
Phone Hub can show recent photos and screenshots from the Android phone and can let you download them to the Chromebook. It is intended for recent items rather than a complete replacement for a cloud photo library or a manual cable transfer. Large libraries, older files and files that have not finished syncing may not appear immediately.
Stream selected phone apps
On eligible phones, Phone Hub can stream phone apps to a Chromebook window. The app still runs on the phone; the Chromebook provides the display and input connection. Google warns that some entertainment apps may not behave as expected because of digital-rights-management policies. Streaming can also end after inactivity, when the devices move too far apart or when the connection fails.
Minimum requirements for basic Phone Hub

Google also has a broader connected-phone guide with different minimum figures: ChromeOS 71 and Android 6, with both devices using the same Google Account. That guide covers a wider collection of functions, including messages, photos, network tethering and Chromebook unlocking. Do not substitute those figures for the Phone Hub page’s M89 and Android 5.1 baseline; they describe a different scope of connected-device features.

Which Android phones support app streaming?
Google’s published list names specific phone families and software conditions. The list is narrower than basic Phone Hub support, and Google describes the devices as select Android 13-or-later models where that version requirement is stated. A model name alone is therefore not a guarantee for every regional variant, carrier configuration or software build.

Google does not say that every Android 13 phone supports streaming. If your phone is not in the named list, plan on basic Phone Hub features only unless the Chromebook and phone explicitly offer the streaming option after pairing.
Network and proximity requirements for streaming
For app streaming, the phone and Chromebook must be close to each other and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Some public or private Wi-Fi networks block the device-to-device traffic that streaming needs. A phone and Chromebook can both show internet access and still fail to establish a streaming session if the network isolates clients.

Google says Instant Tethering can help when the current Wi-Fi environment does not support streaming. Tethering uses the phone’s mobile connection, so carrier restrictions, data charges and faster battery drain may apply. Moving both devices closer and trying a trusted home network are simpler first tests before switching networks.
How to set up Phone Hub
- On the Chromebook, confirm that ChromeOS is M89 or later. Open Settings and check the ChromeOS version if you are unsure.
- On the Android phone, confirm that Android is 5.1 or later. Install pending system updates if the phone offers them.
- Turn on Bluetooth on both devices. Bluetooth is used during discovery and pairing even though streaming also needs Wi-Fi.
- On the Chromebook, select the Phone control beside the time in the shelf.
- Select Get started, review the prompt, then choose Accept and continue.
- Under Connected devices, choose Android phone and follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
- When setup finishes, open the connected-phone settings and enable only the features you want, such as notifications, recent photos or app streaming.
Google says the listed Phone Hub features can still be used when the Chromebook is offline, although anything that needs a live phone connection, network access or a new synchronization may not update until connectivity returns.

Streaming requires permissions on the phone for notifications, photos and media, and apps. If you skip one of these prompts, the streaming control may be missing or a session may open without the expected content. Review the Android permission settings for the connected-device service and grant access only if you are comfortable with what will appear on the Chromebook.
Streaming is session-based. It may stop after inactivity, when the phone and Chromebook are no longer close, or after a connection error. Reopening the app from Phone Hub normally starts a new session; persistent failures point to compatibility, permissions or network conditions rather than an ordinary app crash.

Messages, photos and network connection
Google’s general connection guide describes syncing chat notifications and photos, sending and receiving text messages on the Chromebook, connecting the Chromebook to the phone’s network and using the phone to unlock the Chromebook. That guide lists ChromeOS 71 and Android 6 as its minimums and says both devices should use the same Google Account. These requirements belong to that broader guide, not to the narrower Phone Hub baseline.
Smart Lock
Smart Lock is documented separately from Phone Hub. Google says the phone needs Android L-MR1 or later, must be unlocked, must have Bluetooth enabled and must have a screen lock. The Chromebook needs an internet connection and the same Google Account as the phone. If Smart Lock is your goal, check these conditions independently even if Phone Hub already works.

Google’s tethering support lists ChromeOS 71 or later, Android 8.1 or later, the same Google Account and a Chromebook that supports Instant Hotspot. Carrier limits or extra charges may apply, and sharing mobile data can consume more phone battery. A Chromebook may therefore meet Phone Hub requirements but fail to offer Instant Hotspot because it misses one of these separate conditions.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Phone control or setup option is missing
- Check that the Chromebook is on ChromeOS M89 or later and the phone is on Android 5.1 or later.
- Turn on Bluetooth on both devices and restart Bluetooth if discovery is stuck.
- Make sure the phone is not already paired to a different Chromebook account profile.
- If the Chromebook belongs to an employer or school, ask the administrator whether connected-phone features are blocked.
Basic Phone Hub works, but app streaming is unavailable
- Compare the exact phone model with Google’s named streaming list; Android 13 by itself is not enough.
- Check that the listed model is running the required Android version and that system updates have completed.
- Confirm that the phone and Chromebook are close and on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Try a different trusted network or Instant Tethering if the current network isolates devices.
- Review permissions for notifications, photos and media, and apps.
Streaming starts and then stops
- Keep the phone nearby and awake while testing.
- Prevent the phone from losing Wi-Fi or switching networks during the session.
- Check whether the failure happens only with an entertainment app; DRM restrictions can prevent expected behavior.
- Retry after reconnecting both devices. A timeout caused by inactivity or distance is different from a model that is not eligible.
Photos, notifications or texts do not appear
- Open the connected-phone settings and verify that the individual feature is enabled.
- Confirm that the phone is using the Google Account expected by the connected-device guide.
- Allow the relevant notification, media or messaging permission on the phone.
- Wait for synchronization to complete; recent photos and screenshots are the items Phone Hub is designed to surface, not necessarily the entire phone library.
How to judge your own phone
- First test basic eligibility: ChromeOS M89 or later on the Chromebook and Android 5.1 or later on the phone.
- Next decide which feature matters. Status, notifications, tabs and recent photos use the broad Phone Hub capability; app streaming requires the narrower model list.
- If streaming matters, verify the exact model, Android version, same-Wi-Fi connection, proximity and permissions.
- Finally check management restrictions. A work or school administrator can disable features even when the hardware and software meet Google’s published requirements.
This checklist prevents the most common mistaken conclusion: that any Android phone meeting the basic version requirement can run phone apps on a Chromebook.
