What S-Game has actually established
Phantom World is designed as a collision of systems
In S-Game’s 2023 introduction, founder and CEO Soulframe Liang described Phantom Blade Zero as the “spiritual rebirth” of the original Rainblood. The new game takes place in Phantom World, which Liang characterizes as a place where several kinds of power meet. His exact description is: “Phantom World, the universe that the game is set in, is a universe where many kinds of powers converge.”
Those powers include Chinese kung fu, intricate machines reminiscent of steampunk, occult arts and phenomena that do not fit neatly into the named categories. That last category matters. The official premise does not promise that every unusual visual will eventually receive a purely mechanical, purely mystical or purely martial explanation. It leaves room for things that sit between, or outside, those systems.

The personal plot supplies a second possible meaning
Soul begins as an elite assassin serving The Order. He is framed for murdering the organization’s patriarch, suffers a potentially fatal injury and survives through a mystic healer’s improvised treatment. The cure lasts 66 days. Soul must discover who orchestrated the killing before that in-world deadline expires.
That setup gives an unexplained image two possible narrative jobs. It might expand the setting independently of Soul’s immediate problem, or it might be evidence in the conspiracy that caused his downfall. Nothing in the public descriptions identifies an unnamed machine, mark or supernatural event as the answer to the patriarch’s murder.
“Kungfupunk” is the creator’s label
Liang told the Epic Games Store that S-Game created a new identity “as kungfupunk.” He explained the blend as Chinese kung fu culture combined with modern pop-culture elements. In the same discussion, he said the story uses wuxia to express revenge, loyalty, love and friendship.
“Kungfupunk” is therefore a useful description of the intended mixture, not an independent genre ruling that explains every prop. A brass mechanism may support that aesthetic, but its plot function still has to be established by the game.
Three grounded readings of an unexplained detail
Without a named screenshot or scene, these readings should be treated as compatible possibilities rather than competing theories. The strongest interpretation will be the one that fits the detail’s placement, nearby characters and later story context.
Reading 1: evidence of Phantom World’s hybrid infrastructure
A machine with unfamiliar anatomy, an engraved device or an impossible-looking weapon could simply demonstrate how Phantom World works. S-Game intentionally places martial techniques beside elaborate machinery and occult practice. Under this reading, the detail is worldbuilding first: it tells you that technology, combat traditions and esoteric knowledge developed alongside one another.

This interpretation is directly supported at the setting level because S-Game names all three elements and also acknowledges phenomena outside them. It does not require the object to be a secret artifact or a disguised supernatural entity. Its value may be cumulative, showing how ordinary life, warfare and travel function in a world that has no single technological rulebook.

Reading 2: a clue in the conspiracy against The Order
The same detail could become plot evidence if Soul encounters it while tracing the patriarch’s murder. A symbol might identify a faction, a mechanism might reveal how the framing was carried out, or an occult practice might explain why the healer’s treatment works for exactly 66 days. These are plausible story functions, not confirmed explanations.
This reading connects the image to Soul’s personal stakes and the countdown. It is stronger when the detail appears near Order personnel, crime scenes, the healer or documents related to the patriarch. It is weaker when the image appears only as environmental decoration with no interaction or narrative consequence.
Reading 3: a phenomenon deliberately left outside familiar categories
S-Game’s wording allows for something stranger than a choice between “machine” and “magic.” An anomaly could be a force that neither kung fu practitioners nor engineers fully understand. The game may use that uncertainty to make Phantom World feel unstable, or to delay the explanation until Soul learns more about the people controlling events.
This is the most cautious reading because it makes the fewest assumptions. It follows the official acknowledgement that some phenomena lie beyond the named categories, while avoiding the claim that every anomaly is supernatural. The game has not said that an unexplained visual belongs to this fourth space.
Reading 4: contrast between a bleak world and human loyalty
Liang also wrote, “A bleak world makes characters with hearts of gold really stand out.” A disturbing image can therefore be thematic rather than evidentiary. Ruined machinery, ritual marks or grotesque injuries may establish the world’s harshness so that Soul’s loyalty, friendships and acts of mercy carry greater weight.

That possibility fits the stated wuxia themes of revenge, loyalty, love and friendship. It should not be mistaken for proof that the image identifies a villain. Atmosphere can support character drama without functioning as a coded answer.
How to decide which reading fits a specific scene
When the actual image or trailer is available, examine it against three questions: what the developers directly support, whether it touches Soul’s investigation, and whether it preserves the setting’s mixed vocabulary.

Several readings can be true at once. A device might establish the world’s engineering while also serving as evidence in the murder investigation. Do not force an exclusive choice unless dialogue, a quest objective or a later reveal makes one explicit.

The countdown is more than background flavor. It gives every discovery a practical cost. Soul cannot investigate indefinitely, so an apparently decorative detail may become meaningful if it changes where he can go, whom he can trust or how his treatment is maintained.
It also creates a distinction between explanation and urgency. The game could explain what a machine does without explaining who built it; it could identify an occult technique without revealing who used it against Soul. A clue matters because it advances the investigation before the cure expires, not merely because it looks mysterious.
The deadline is an in-world premise, not a published statistic about playtime. No official material says that players have 66 real-world days, nor that every side activity consumes a fixed number of them.

How the wider world may deliver answers
Wulin secrets and optional paths
In an August 2026 PlayStation Blog update, S-Game said that Wulin secrets are distributed throughout the world. It also stated that some side quests can open story paths and deepen the player’s understanding of the martial world. An unexplained detail may therefore be resolved away from the critical route, through an optional character, location or quest chain.

A trailer may show an object before the side quest that contextualizes it has been seen, and a visual that appears symbolic could later turn out to be a practical part of a local tradition.
A connected, non-linear map
An Epic Games Store recap of the August 2026 deep dive described eight regions in a connected, non-linear world containing secrets, side quests, treasures and clues. Because that account is a storefront editorial recap rather than the original developer post, it should be treated as a summary attributed to Epic Games Store and 2026.
Non-linear progression supports multiple explanations for the same image. The order in which a player reaches a region may affect what context is available, so an early interpretation can be incomplete without being false.
Weapons as cultural and mechanical evidence
The same 2026 S-Game update lists “more than 30 main weapons and 25 Phantom Edges — S-Game, 2026.” A large arsenal can show how martial schools, manufacturing traditions and occult practices overlap, but a weapon’s existence alone does not identify the mastermind or explain a particular scene.

S-Game says Donnie Yen is a creative consultant and performs Mó Yuan through likeness, facial capture and motion capture. That confirms a substantial performance and consultation role. It does not establish that Mó Yuan knows the truth behind an unexplained object, that he is the mastermind or that his character’s presence reveals the plot’s answer.

Performance talent can signal the importance of a character without disclosing the character’s allegiance. Any theory about Mó Yuan should wait for dialogue, quest context or an explicit statement from S-Game.
Claims the available material does not justify
- “Every anomaly is supernatural.” S-Game explicitly includes machines and phenomena outside the named categories, so “occult” is not proof that each strange event is magic.
- “Steampunk explains the technology completely.” The official wording says machines are reminiscent of steampunk; it does not provide a complete engineering system or rule out other forces.
- “The game continues Rainblood’s canon directly.” “Spiritual rebirth” establishes a relationship of inspiration and reimagining, not a confirmed continuity map.
- “It is a Soulslike.” In 2024, Liang told GamesBeat, “Our game is not what we’d precisely label as a Souls or ‘Soulslike’ game.” He described the project at that development stage as combo-driven action on a three-dimensional map. Earlier demonstrations are not final review evidence.
- “A trailer image has a confirmed lore answer.” No official statement currently identifies the unnamed detail in this headline or assigns it a definitive meaning.
Release context and what may still change
S-Game’s August 17, 2026 PlayStation Blog post gives October 29 as the release date and notes October 28 in the United States and select regions. The announced platform is PS5. Dates, regional availability, editions and prices can change, so verify the current PlayStation listing before treating those details as final purchasing information.
Release-day context may also settle questions that previews cannot. A full quest, codex entry or dialogue scene could identify the object’s maker, connect it to The Order or deliberately leave it ambiguous. Until that evidence appears, the responsible wording is “could suggest,” “one reading is” or “the game has not confirmed.”
Bottom line: treat the detail as a question, not an answer
The unexplained element most likely reflects Phantom Blade Zero’s central design idea: a Phantom World where kung fu, intricate machinery, occult arts and stranger phenomena coexist. It could also become a clue in the conspiracy that frames Soul and starts his 66-day race. Those interpretations are grounded in S-Game’s published premise, but neither is a confirmed explanation for an unspecified image.
The best analysis therefore keeps three layers separate: what S-Game has said, what the scene visibly supports and what remains speculation. That approach preserves the mystery while giving the detail a meaningful place in the game’s story and world.
