What Permissions Should You Review Before Setting Up an AI Wearable?

Review permissions instead of accepting every setup prompt. The usual checklist includes camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos and videos, Bluetooth or nearby devices, notifications, and any additional category the companion app requests. Allow a permission only when it enables a feature you intend to use, then inspect the app’s own controls for captures, voice, notifications, and data sharing. Phone settings and app settings are separate privacy layers, and the exact choices vary by wearable, phone model, operating-system version, software release, feature, and region.

Why an AI wearable asks for so many permissions

An AI wearable normally relies on a companion app for pairing, firmware updates, media transfer, assistant features, and account management. The app may therefore request access that is broader than the wearable’s camera and microphone alone. A location permission might support nearby-device discovery or a location-aware assistant; contacts might enable calling; photo-library access might be needed to import captured media. None of those prompts is an instruction to grant access automatically.

Use the explanation shown by the operating system and the app to connect each permission with a specific feature. If you do not plan to use that feature, deny the request or choose the narrowest available option. You can usually revisit the decision later in the phone’s settings.

Permission checklist: what to examine and why

Permission or control Question to ask What it may enable
Camera Does the companion app need camera access for a feature I will use? Camera-based AI prompts, scanning, or phone-camera functions. This is separate from the camera built into the wearable.
Microphone and speech recognition Do I want hands-free commands, voice conversations, or audio capture? Voice activation, speech recognition, calls, and recorded audio. The operating system may show a microphone-use indicator.
Location Is a location-aware feature worth sharing location, and does it need background access? Navigation, local answers, device discovery, or other location-dependent functions. A broad, all-the-time setting is not automatically necessary.
Contacts Will I use calling or messaging through the wearable? Address-book lookup and contact selection. Deny it if you do not want the app to read contact information.
Photos and videos Does the app need the existing phone library, or only media I explicitly import? Choosing files to transfer, editing, backup, or sharing. This permission does not by itself determine what the wearable captures.
Bluetooth, nearby devices, or local network Is this needed to pair and communicate with the wearable? Finding, connecting to, and exchanging data with nearby hardware. Android and iPhone use different names and controls.
Notifications Do I want setup status, connection warnings, assistant replies, or other alerts? System and assistant notifications. The app can also have a separate notification switch.
Calendar Will I use reminders or schedule-related assistant features? Reading or creating calendar information. Do not grant it merely because it appears in a standard permission list.
Health, motion, or physical activity Does a health or activity feature explain why this data is required? Activity-aware experiences, if the particular wearable supports them. The requirement is device- and feature-specific.
Tracking and account sharing What information does the app say it shares, and which cloud-processing choices can I change? Account-linked services, diagnostics, personalization, and processing by the app provider. These choices are usually outside the operating system’s permission screen.

How to review permissions on Android

Open the companion app’s permission page

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, select the AI wearable’s companion app, and choose Permissions.
  3. Review each allowed, denied, or unused permission. Tap a category to change it.
  4. For camera, microphone, and location, select the least-privileged option that still supports the feature you want. Depending on Android version and device, choices can include While using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow. Location can also expose an Allow all the time choice.

Google notes that labels and paths can differ by manufacturer and software version; some Pixel instructions require Android 11 or later. If your menus use different wording, search Settings for the companion app or “permission manager.”

Review by permission type

To see which apps can use a particular category, open Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Select Camera, Microphone, Location, Nearby devices, Contacts, Photos and videos, or another category, then inspect the wearable app’s status. This view is useful when you have more than one app associated with the device.

Check recent sensor access

Android’s Privacy Dashboard can show which apps accessed sensitive categories such as camera, location, and microphone during the last 24 hours. Use it after setup and after a normal day of use to see whether activity matches your expectations. A permission being granted does not prove that the app is actively using it; the dashboard provides a record of access that occurred during its displayed period.

Read the app’s Google Play disclosure

The companion app’s Google Play listing includes a Data safety section describing data the developer says it collects, shares, or protects. Treat this as a disclosure to read alongside the permission screen, not as a replacement for the app’s privacy policy or in-app controls. A phone permission tells you what the operating system allows; it does not describe every retention or cloud-processing practice.

How to review permissions on iPhone

Use Privacy & Security

  1. Open Settings and tap Privacy & Security.
  2. Open Camera, Microphone, Bluetooth, Contacts, Photos, and Location Services one at a time.
  3. Find the companion app and turn access on or off. For Photos, choose the narrow library option available on your iOS version if you want to select media rather than expose the entire library.
  4. Return to the app’s own settings and review notifications, voice, capture, account, and sharing controls.

Apple says apps must request permission before using the iPhone camera or microphone and explain why they want it. iPhone also displays status indicators when those sensors are in use. You can change a decision after granting or denying access, so a cautious initial choice is reversible.

Turn on App Privacy Report before you need it

In Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report, turn on the report to record sensor and data access plus network activity. It starts collecting only after activation, so it cannot reconstruct earlier history. Apple documents a seven-day view once enough data has accumulated. Check the report after pairing and during ordinary use; unexpected access is a reason to revisit the app’s permissions and privacy settings.

Separate phone permissions from wearable behavior

There are at least three distinct questions: what the phone lets the companion app access, what the wearable’s hardware can capture, and what the app or its cloud service does with information after capture. Granting phone-camera access does not automatically mean the wearable’s camera is recording, and denying access to the phone photo library does not erase media already stored on the wearable.

Look for controls inside the companion app for capture importing, voice features, notifications, diagnostics, account connections, and information shared with the provider. These controls can remain available even when the operating system shows a single broad permission category. Read the current privacy disclosure for your model and region because menus and processing options can change with software updates.

Example: reviewing settings for Meta AI glasses

Meta says its Meta AI app provides preferences for captures, voice, notifications, and information shared with Meta. Review those settings after the iPhone or Android permission screen rather than assuming the operating system’s decision covers them all.

Meta also says photos and videos captured for the glasses’ gallery stay on the glasses until the owner chooses to move them to the phone through the app. That is a capture-and-transfer behavior, not a promise that every model or future software release will work identically; check the documentation for your generation.

Capture light and consent guidance

In a July 7, 2026 FAQ, Meta says a white capture LED blinks during gallery capture and that the light has no off switch. Meta says second-generation glasses disable the camera when the LED is blocked, and that later updates can disable the camera when physical tampering is detected. These statements apply to the product generations and software described in that FAQ; they should not be generalized to every AI wearable.

Meta advises asking people for permission before photographing or recording them and avoiding sensitive locations or places where privacy is expected. A visible indicator is not a substitute for consent, local law, or good judgment. Follow venue rules and explain when you are using an assistant or recording.

A practical setup procedure

  1. Identify the features you actually plan to use. Write down whether you need pairing, voice commands, calls, navigation, media import, notifications, or health functions.
  2. Install the official companion app and read its permission explanations. If a prompt does not match a planned feature, pause instead of accepting it.
  3. Grant only the minimum access. Prefer while-using, ask-every-time, one-time, or selected-photo options where your phone offers them.
  4. Finish pairing with Bluetooth or nearby-device access. If pairing fails, temporarily check that the relevant device permission is enabled, then test whether it can be narrowed after setup.
  5. Configure in-app controls. Review capture import, voice activation, notifications, cloud or account sharing, and diagnostic settings separately.
  6. Test one feature at a time. Confirm that the feature works, note which permission it used, and avoid enabling unrelated categories.
  7. Check the phone’s activity tools. Use Android Privacy Dashboard or iPhone App Privacy Report after normal use to compare actual access with your choices.
  8. Recheck after updates. A firmware or app update can add features, change labels, or introduce a new request.

What happens when you deny a permission?

Denial normally limits the feature tied to that category rather than making the entire wearable unusable, but behavior differs by app and model. A voice assistant may stop responding without microphone access; contact-based calling may disappear without Contacts; media import may be unavailable without Photos access; and pairing may fail without Bluetooth or nearby-device access. The cited platform guidance does not establish a universal list of functions that continue after each denial, so verify the specific app’s explanation.

  • If setup loops on a permission prompt, open the app’s page in Settings, choose the required category, and restart pairing. Grant it only if the feature is one you intend to use.
  • If the wearable connects but media will not import, distinguish Photos access from the wearable’s own gallery or capture setting. Select a limited library option where available.
  • If voice commands fail, check both microphone permission and the app’s voice or wake-word switch. A hardware mute control, if present, can also prevent capture.
  • If notifications are missing, check the phone’s notification permission and the companion app’s notification preferences; they are separate controls.
  • If location-dependent answers are inaccurate, confirm whether the feature needs location while using the app or background access. Do not enable all-the-time location merely to solve an unrelated pairing problem.

Android and iPhone controls compared

Review area Android iPhone
App-specific permissions Settings > Apps > companion app > Permissions Settings > Privacy & Security, then choose a category
Central permission view Permission manager groups apps by permission type Privacy & Security category pages group requesting apps
Recent sensor history Privacy Dashboard shows camera, location, and microphone access for the displayed period, including the last 24 hours App Privacy Report records sensor access and network activity after it is enabled, with a documented seven-day view
Granular choices Depending on version and category: while using, ask every time, deny, and an all-the-time location option Category-specific choices; Photos can offer limited library selection, while location and sensor controls depend on iOS version
Nearby connectivity Nearby devices permission can govern finding and connecting to hardware Bluetooth and, where applicable, Local Network controls are separate categories
App-level privacy controls Must be checked inside the companion app and its current disclosures Must be checked inside the companion app and its current disclosures

These menus show what each platform exposes; they do not establish that one platform or wearable is categorically more private. Feature behavior after a permission is withheld depends on the particular app, device, software version, and region.

Questions to ask before allowing access

  • What exact feature uses this data?
  • Does the feature need one-time, while-using, or background access?
  • Is this permission for the phone’s sensor or library, rather than the wearable’s hardware?
  • Can I import selected photos instead of the whole library?
  • Where does the app say captures, voice data, diagnostics, and account information are processed or shared?
  • Can I turn the feature off later without uninstalling the app?
  • How will I see future access in Privacy Dashboard or App Privacy Report?

Ongoing privacy maintenance

Permission review is not a one-time setup task. Revisit the companion app after major app or firmware updates, when you add a new feature, or when the wearable changes owners. Remove unused permissions, disable notifications you do not need, and check recent sensor activity. If you stop using the wearable, revoke its permissions and disconnect it from Bluetooth; then review the account and cloud-sharing controls before deleting the app.

The safest default is feature-based access: enable what a specific task requires, observe how the device behaves, and withdraw access when that task is finished. This approach preserves useful AI functions without treating a long permission list as a setup checklist to accept blindly.
