What Permissions Should an AI Service Desk Have in Teams and Slack?

An AI service desk should receive only the permissions its enabled features require—not blanket access to every conversation by default. In Teams, review Microsoft Graph permissions and resource-specific consent (RSC) separately from app availability. In Slack, review the granular OAuth scopes attached to the app’s tokens. In either platform, ask the vendor to map every requested permission to a specific feature, data boundary, and action.

What to check before approving an AI service desk

Installation approval and access to collaboration data are separate decisions. An app may be permitted for users while still needing review of what it can read or change. Evaluate the request across these areas:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Data read: Does the service need messages, files, profiles, channel metadata, or ticket data? Which channel types and retention windows are in scope?
  • Actions: Can it post replies only, or can it also edit or delete messages, create channels, invite people, or perform administrative actions?
  • Principal: Does it act as an app or bot, or through a delegated human user? Require a reason for user-level access or impersonation.
  • Boundary: Is access limited to a personal app, a selected team or chat, channels where the bot is present, or the whole tenant or workspace?
  • Consent and lifecycle: Who grants access, what does the install prompt disclose, how are permission changes reviewed, and how are grants revoked?
  • Data handling: How are prompts, retrieved messages, files, tickets, and logs stored and retained, and are they used for model training? Platform permissions alone do not answer these questions.

Ask for the service’s current Teams manifest and Slack OAuth scope list, including optional scopes and app-only, application, user, or delegated permissions. For each item, record the feature that depends on it, the data it exposes, and the actions it allows.

How to review permissions in Microsoft Teams

Teams app permissions are managed through Microsoft Entra ID and resource-specific consent (RSC), depending on the feature. Graph API permissions require user or administrator consent. RSC is declared in the Teams app manifest and can grant access to a particular team or chat; it is available to apps installed on the Teams client. See Microsoft’s Teams app permissions overview.

Prefer a resource-level grant when it is sufficient

RSC can keep access scoped to a particular team or chat rather than granting broader tenant-wide access. A team owner can grant the relevant consent when adding the app. RSC is not automatically read-only: Microsoft’s examples include creating or deleting channels and reading team settings, so inspect its write and administrative effects as carefully as Graph permissions.

Microsoft Graph guidance recommends least privilege and notes that narrower RSC can replace broader delegated permissions for some operations. For example, ChatMessage.Send.Chat can be an alternative to Chat.ReadWrite for sending a chat message. That example does not define a complete permission set for an AI service desk; requests, context retrieval, search, replies, and installation management may have different requirements. See Microsoft Graph permission best practices.

Inspect consent and app availability separately

Before granting organization-wide Graph consent, inspect the requested permissions in the Teams admin center. Microsoft says organization-wide consent permits access to the specified resources for users for whom the app is allowed. Application permissions require administrator consent; user-consent settings can be configured for selected low-risk delegated permissions. RSC grants are displayed alongside other permissions, and team owners can consent during installation.

Microsoft’s admin guidance also covers checking granted permissions and revoking them when appropriate. If an app update adds Graph permissions requiring administrator consent, renewed consent is required. Review the change rather than treating an approved installation as permanent approval for future access. See Microsoft’s Teams consent management guidance.

Teams app policies determine which apps users can use, and app-centric management can target availability per app. These controls do not replace review of Graph or RSC data access. See Teams app policies.

How to review permissions in Slack

Slack apps use OAuth scopes to specify access to data and functionality. Review both read access and write or administrative powers, and prefer granular app scopes over broad legacy permission models. Current Slack apps can select individual bot-token scopes; use user-token scopes only when a workflow genuinely needs to act on a person’s behalf. See Slack’s app scope catalog and Slack authentication guidance.

Treat AI-app examples as examples, not a default recipe

Slack’s documented AI-app workflow lists assistant:write, im:history, and chat:write. These relate to assistant functionality, DM history where the app has been added, and posting messages. They are not a universal minimum for service desks: an app that handles explicit requests may not need broad history or file access, while one that searches channels will need additional scopes and a clear channel and data boundary. Ask the vendor to justify each scope against the exact workflow. See Slack’s AI app documentation.

Check channel boundaries and enhanced review

Slack says scopes should follow least privilege and have clear reasons. Broad access to workspace message or file data is unlikely to be approved through Marketplace review without a strong security or compliance use case; history, file-read, canvases-read, and admin.* scopes may receive enhanced review. Slack also says apps should not expose information or take actions for people who would not otherwise have access to them in Slack. See Slack’s Marketplace app guidelines.

Slack’s Data Access API describes query-grounded retrieval within the permissions granted and lists assistant:write, im:history, and chat:write as relevant scopes. Its documented event context can provide an action token for contextual search, but scopes do not override channel membership or workspace policy. See Slack’s Data Access API documentation.

How to decide whether a requested permission is justified

  1. Start with the workflow. List the service’s enabled features: receiving direct requests, searching messages, reading files, replying, updating tickets, or administering collaboration objects.
  2. Map each permission to a feature. Ask what breaks if the permission is removed, what data becomes visible, and what actions become possible. Treat optional permissions as separate decisions.
  3. Set the smallest workable boundary. Ask whether access can be limited to a named Teams team or chat, or to Slack channels where the bot is present. Require a specific explanation for private-channel or DM history access.
  4. Limit write authority. Prefer reply-only access over editing, deleting, channel management, or administrative control unless a documented workflow requires more.
  5. Pilot before broad rollout. Use a small, representative set of teams or channels. Test normal requests and prohibited use, including whether someone can retrieve content from a channel they cannot access directly.
  6. Assign ongoing ownership. Record an approver and review date. Reassess app updates and new scopes, remove unused grants, and revoke access when the service is retired.

During the pilot, also check how the service handles external or shared channels, files, retained message content, prompts, logs, and data after uninstall. Neither Teams nor Slack scopes establish the vendor’s retention or model-training practices.

What a permission request cannot tell you

No vendor is named here, so there is no single Teams permission set or Slack scope list that can be called correct for every AI service desk. Product permissions and scope names can change; the current app manifest and install flow are the relevant documents for the service being considered. Verify those requests directly, and assess the vendor’s own data-handling terms separately from platform consent.
