What Penguins Eat and How Their Diet Affects Their Colonies

Penguins are marine predators, but there is no single “penguin diet.” Depending on species, place, season and available prey, they eat fish, squid, krill and other crustaceans. Those choices matter because adults must find prey at sea, return to a colony and transfer enough food to growing chicks. When prey is scarce or difficult to reach, foraging trips can become longer and breeding results can suffer; the strength of that relationship differs among species and locations.

The clearest evidence comes from studies that connect a measured diet with a measured breeding outcome. A 22-year study of gentoo penguins at Bird Island, for example, found that breeding success was strongly related to the amount of krill in the diet. In chinstrap penguins, persistent sea ice near a colony can reduce access to the sea even when prey exists offshore. These are specific findings, not a rule that diet alone determines every colony’s size or trend.

What penguins eat

Most penguins pursue small, energy-rich marine animals. Fish, squid and crustaceans such as Antarctic krill are the main prey groups, but the proportions can change from one colony or year to the next. A penguin’s food list is therefore best understood as a response to where prey is concentrated and how much energy the bird needs at a particular stage of its breeding or moult cycle.

  • Fish: Species such as Antarctic silverfish and lanternfish can provide dense calories and are important prey for several penguins.
  • Krill and other crustaceans: These shrimp-like animals can dominate meals when ocean conditions make them accessible.
  • Squid and cephalopods: Squid, and occasionally octopus, appear in diets recorded for several species.

Diet studies use different methods, including observations of prey brought to chicks and analysis of stomach contents or regurgitated meals. A list of prey species does not by itself show which food supplied most energy, so comparisons need to specify the study’s location, years and measurement.

Five species show why there is no universal penguin menu

Species Typical prey in the cited profile or study Foraging and seasonal detail Colony relevance
Emperor Antarctic silverfish, other fish, Antarctic krill and squid Adults fill up at sea before returning to colonies that may be far from feeding grounds. The Australian Antarctic Program profile gives a daily adult intake of about 2–3 kg, rising to as much as 6 kg before moult or breeding. Each chick needs about 42 kg of food from each parent over development, according to that profile; long travel makes successful loading and return important.
King Mainly lanternfish during breeding; squid make up a larger share in winter The breeding cycle lasts 13–16 months, including the pre-moult period, so food demand and colony responses do not necessarily follow a single calendar year. See the Australian Antarctic Program king penguin profile (updated 21 November 2024). A long cycle can spread the effects of a poor feeding season across more than one year of colony activity.
Adélie Meals within 20 km of a colony mostly include fish, amphipods and crystal krill; offshore meals are mainly Antarctic krill Breeding adults forage 5–120 km offshore, and trips last 5–72 hours, according to the Australian Antarctic Program profile. Distance, trip duration and the location of prey determine how frequently parents can return to feed chicks.
Chinstrap Primarily krill and fish The Australian Antarctic Program account notes that extensive sea ice near colonies can restrict access to the sea. Reduced access can lower breeding success by limiting feeding trips, even before a shortage of prey is demonstrated.
Gentoo Crustaceans, small fish and squid; a long-term Bird Island record also included octopus and many fish species The British Antarctic Survey study covered 1989–2010 and identified 26 prey species. Krill dominated in 10 years and fish in 12, with approximately equal crustacean and fish contributions across the full period. At Bird Island, breeding success tracked the amount of krill in the diet, and few chicks fledged in years when krill was particularly scarce.

How food at sea becomes food in a nest

Penguin parents do not feed chicks from a permanent food store at the colony. An adult leaves the nesting area, locates prey, captures and swallows it, then returns to regurgitate the meal for its chick. The trip’s value depends on more than the quantity of prey in the ocean: the parent must be able to reach the feeding area, find prey at a profitable density and get back before the chick needs another meal.

Foraging distance sets a time budget

When productive water lies close to a colony, an adult can make more frequent provisioning trips. If prey shifts offshore, the same parent may spend longer travelling and less time delivering food. The Adélie ranges in the table illustrate how widely this time budget can vary even within one species. A longer trip is not automatically harmful if it returns a large, energy-rich meal, but repeated low-return trips increase the risk that a chick is fed too little or too late.

Access can be as important as abundance

Sea ice, storms and ocean conditions can block or slow the route between a colony and open water. The chinstrap profile specifically links extensive nearby sea ice with lower breeding success because adults have difficulty reaching the sea. This mechanism is different from proving that krill or fish numbers fell: food may be present beyond an obstacle that parents cannot cross efficiently.

Adults must meet their own energy costs

Parents use part of every meal to fuel swimming, diving, thermoregulation and the return journey. During energetically expensive periods such as moult or the approach to breeding, intake requirements rise. The emperor figures are species-specific and should not be applied to smaller penguins, but they show why a colony can be sensitive to changes in prey energy or travel distance even when adults continue to return.

What diet changes can do to breeding outcomes

Less food can reduce chick provisioning

If prey is scarce, dispersed or unusually far away, parents may return with smaller meals or make fewer successful trips. Chicks can grow more slowly, remain vulnerable for longer and be less likely to reach fledging. A breeding measure such as chicks fledged per nest captures this chain more directly than a simple list of prey species.

Timing matters

A short-lived shortage during egg formation, incubation, guard stages or chick rearing can have different consequences. King penguins’ 13–16-month cycle is a reminder that a colony’s response may lag the season in which ocean conditions changed. For other species, a brief pulse of prey during chick rearing may be more important than the annual average.

Diet flexibility can buffer a bad year

Some penguins switch among available prey. The Bird Island gentoo record found krill dominance in 10 of 22 years and fish dominance in 12, while the entire period contained 26 prey species. That flexibility can help adults continue provisioning when one prey group declines, but it does not guarantee stable breeding: replacement prey may be less abundant, less energy-rich or farther away.

What the gentoo study at Bird Island actually showed

The British Antarctic Survey summarized a 1989–2010 study of gentoo penguin diet at Bird Island. Researchers recorded squid, octopus and 17 fish species among 26 identified prey species. Across the 22-year period, crustaceans and fish contributed approximately equal amounts overall. That long average conceals substantial annual change: krill was the dominant food in 10 years, while fish dominated in 12.

The study also connected diet with reproduction. Breeding success was strongly related to the amount of krill in the diet, and few chicks fledged in years when krill was particularly scarce. This is evidence of an association at Bird Island over the reported study period. It does not prove that every gentoo colony, or every penguin species, will show the same response, because colonies differ in oceanography, alternative prey and travel distance. Why sea-ice conditions complicate the chinstrap example

Chinstrap penguins mainly eat krill and fish, but their breeding performance also depends on whether adults can reach open water. Extensive sea ice close to a colony can lengthen or block the route to feeding grounds, reducing the number of practical provisioning trips. The Australian Antarctic Program identifies this access problem as a reason breeding success is lower in such years.

Climate explanations for chinstrap change remain more complicated than a single prey rule. A 2023 paper in Scientific Reports examined a proposed pathway in which environmental conditions reduce Antarctic krill availability and thereby affect breeding. Its title and analysis describe contrasting conditions that precluded attributing the observed breeding pattern to lower krill availability in that case. The authors also emphasize that empirical support for some proposed climate-driven mechanisms has been limited. Treat these pathways as study-specific hypotheses rather than settled, universal causation; see the 2023 Scientific Reports study.

How to compare penguin diets without drawing the wrong conclusion

“More fish” or “more krill” is not a ranking of which species is better fed. A meaningful comparison keeps several variables together:

  1. Prey composition: Identify the actual fish, crustaceans or cephalopods recorded, not just a broad category.
  2. Season and breeding stage: A winter diet may differ from the food delivered during chick rearing, incubation or moult.
  3. Distance and access: Record how far adults travel, how long trips last and whether sea ice or weather restricts the route.
  4. Availability: Distinguish prey present in the ecosystem from prey that penguins can catch at profitable densities.
  5. Flexibility: Note whether adults switch prey when conditions change, and whether substitutes provide comparable energy.
  6. Measured outcome: Specify whether a study measured meal composition, adult condition, chick growth, fledging success or population size.
  7. Place and years: Keep colony, region and study period attached to every result; multi-year averages can hide alternating prey dominance.

The Australian Antarctic Program’s species profiles provide useful natural-history ranges for emperor, king, Adélie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins. A separate long-term Adélie colony account discusses population dynamics over 18 years, but population change should not be treated as a diet measurement by itself; see the 2009 Adélie population-dynamics article.

What a colony response can—and cannot—tell you

A decline in fledged chicks during a poor feeding season is consistent with a food or access problem, but it does not identify the cause on its own. Predation, disease, storms, nesting conditions and adult survival can also affect colony counts. Conversely, a stable number of nests does not prove that food conditions are healthy: adults may compensate by working harder, switching prey or delaying breeding.

The strongest interpretation follows a linked sequence: measure what adults eat, measure where and how long they forage, quantify prey or access conditions, then compare those data with a defined breeding outcome. Evidence from Bird Island supports that chain for gentoos; evidence about sea-ice access supports a different part of the chain for chinstraps. Keeping those boundaries intact is essential when applying penguin diet research to another colony.
