For a Live2D VTuber, you need a 64-bit Windows PC or Mac that meets VTube Studio’s requirements, VTube Studio itself, and OBS or Streamlabs for recording and streaming. You can track your face with a webcam or a compatible phone; a webcam is not mandatory if you have a supported iPhone or iPad.
The model format decides the software. VTube Studio animates Live2D Cubism models, not VRoid or other VRM 3D models. If your avatar is VRoid/VRM, use a 3D-focused tracker such as VSeeFace instead.

Start with the model format
Before buying a camera or upgrading a computer, identify whether your avatar is 2D or 3D. The tracking application must support the model format.
Live2D Cubism models
VTube Studio is designed for Live2D Cubism models. These models are made from layered 2D artwork that the software deforms and animates as you move your face. A Live2D model normally arrives with files prepared for VTube Studio by its creator or rigger.

VRoid and VRM models
VTube Studio’s documentation explicitly states: “VTube Studio DOES NOT support 3D models (VRoid/VRM is not supported).” A VRoid or other VRM avatar therefore will not load in VTube Studio, regardless of how powerful your PC or webcam is. Use a 3D-focused tracker such as VSeeFace for that model type, then send the tracker’s output to your streaming software.
What PC does VTube Studio require?
The figures below come from the VTube Studio Steam listing by DenchiSoft, a 2021 listing retrieved in 2026. They describe the application itself, not the total computer needed for a stream that also runs a game, browser sources, alerts, recording and other programs.

The minimum is a floor for launching VTube Studio, not a comfortable streaming specification. OBS or Streamlabs, a browser with several sources, an alert service, a game and the model renderer all compete for CPU, memory and graphics resources. A machine that only meets the 4 GB RAM and 2 GB VRAM minimum may need lower game settings, fewer browser sources or a separate streaming computer. The listing’s 6 GB RAM and 4 GB VRAM recommendation is a more sensible starting point, but additional headroom is still useful when you stream and play a demanding game on the same PC.

How to interpret the requirements
- 64-bit Windows: The stated Windows tiers require a 64-bit installation. A 32-bit system does not meet the documented requirement.
- Dedicated VRAM: The listing specifies dedicated AMD or NVIDIA graphics memory. Integrated graphics may work in some configurations, but they are not what the published minimum describes.
- DirectX 11: The Windows graphics requirement includes DirectX 11 support.
- Disk space: Reserve at least the stated 3 GB minimum or 4 GB recommended for the application, plus room for model files, recordings, plugins and cache data.
- Mac details: The listing gives the same RAM and VRAM tiers for macOS, but does not state a macOS version, processor speed or storage figure in the supplied requirements.
Do you need a webcam?
No. A webcam is one tracking option, not a requirement. You can use a compatible iPhone or iPad to capture facial movement and send that data to VTube Studio on the computer. If you use a phone, the phone runs the tracker while the PC renders the model.
If you choose a webcam, VTube Studio’s official requirements say: “Generally, a resolution of 1280×720 or above is recommended for good eye- and blink-tracking.” The same guidance says frame rates between 15 and 30 FPS are sufficient for good tracking.
Practical webcam specification
- Resolution: 1280×720 (720p) or higher is the documented baseline. A 1080p webcam can provide more image detail, but the requirements do not make 1080p mandatory.
- Frame rate: 15–30 FPS is the stated sufficient range. A camera advertising a higher rate does not automatically produce better tracking if the image is dark or the face is out of focus.
- Connection: A standard USB webcam is the simplest option because it connects directly to the streaming PC.
- Lighting: Put light in front of your face rather than behind you. Even exposure helps the tracker see your eyes and mouth.
- Placement: Keep the camera near eye level and make sure your entire face remains visible. Avoid a position that is heavily tilted, obstructed by a microphone or cropped by the frame.
A basic 720p USB webcam is therefore a defensible entry-level choice. Choose 1080p when the price and your lighting make the extra detail worthwhile, not because VTube Studio requires it.

Can an iPhone or Android phone track your face?
VTube Studio supports tracking through a connected iPhone or Android device as well as through a webcam. Its requirements guide summarizes the expected tracking quality as “iOS > Webcam > Android.” That is an official ordering of the supported options, not an independent benchmark of every phone and camera.

iPhone and iPad requirements
The supported iOS class is an iPhone or iPad with Face ID or an Apple A12-or-newer chip. A compatible device can send face-tracking data to the PC over the local network while the computer renders the Live2D model. This route is optional, but it is the strongest of the three tracking paths in VTube Studio’s own comparison.
Android requirements
An Android phone must support Google ARCore. The Android device also sends tracking data to the computer over the local network. Because Android hardware and camera implementations vary, the official guide places Android below webcam and iOS in its tracking-quality summary.

Phone-tracking setup
- Install VTube Studio on the PC and install its companion mobile app on the compatible iPhone, iPad or Android phone.
- Connect the phone and PC to the same local network. A wired PC and Wi-Fi phone can work together when the router allows devices on those connections to communicate.
- Open the mobile app and the PC application, then select the phone-tracking or device-connection option shown in VTube Studio.
- Approve the connection request and keep the phone’s front camera aimed at your face. The phone supplies tracking data; the PC continues to render the avatar.
- Check your face position, lighting and expression range before going live. Keep the phone stable so the camera does not swing or lose your face.
Network discovery or firewall rules can prevent pairing even when both devices are online. If the PC cannot see the phone, confirm that both are on the same home network, disable guest-network isolation, check the operating system firewall prompt for VTube Studio, and retry the in-app pairing process.

A working setup has separate jobs for tracking, avatar rendering and production.

VTube Studio’s Steam listing says it works with OBS, Streamlabs or other streaming software. You do not need both OBS and Streamlabs; choose one production application. The tracker and model application are separate from the broadcast software, so closing OBS does not necessarily stop the avatar from moving, and opening VTube Studio alone does not create a stream.

How to assemble the setup
- Identify the avatar: Confirm that the files are Live2D Cubism files for VTube Studio or VRM/VRoid files for a 3D tracker.
- Check the computer: Compare the machine with the Windows or macOS figures above, then allow extra capacity for your game, browser sources and recording.
- Install the model application: Install VTube Studio for Live2D or a VRM-compatible tracker for a 3D model.
- Choose tracking: Connect a 720p-or-better webcam, or install the mobile companion app on a supported iPhone, iPad or ARCore Android phone.
- Calibrate the view: Place the camera at eye level, light your face evenly and keep your face inside the frame. Test blinking, mouth movement and head turns.
- Install production software: Install OBS or Streamlabs and create a scene for the avatar, microphone, game or desktop capture and alerts.
- Add the avatar to the scene: Use the capture method supported by your model application, then position and resize the avatar so it does not cover important game or chat information.
- Run a private test: Record a short clip before streaming. Watch for dropped frames, audio delay, a cropped camera view, transparent-background problems or a model that stops responding when the game starts.

The most economical route is usually the hardware you already own: a supported phone avoids buying a webcam, while a webcam avoids configuring a phone-to-PC network link. The best technical choice depends on the model format first, then on your available devices and the amount of headroom your PC has for streaming.
Common problems and fixes
The model will not load
Check the file format before troubleshooting graphics settings. A VRM or VRoid file is not a VTube Studio model. Use a VRM-compatible tracker instead. For a Live2D model, verify that you received the complete model package rather than only artwork files.
Tracking is jittery or misses blinks
Improve the image before replacing hardware: add front lighting, remove strong backlight, clean the lens, move the camera to eye level and keep your whole face visible. The documented 720p and 15–30 FPS baseline assumes a usable image; resolution alone cannot compensate for a dark or obstructed face.

Put both devices on the same non-guest network, check router isolation and allow VTube Studio through the PC firewall. Restart the mobile and desktop apps after changing the network. If the Android phone lacks Google ARCore or the Apple device lacks Face ID/A12-class support, it does not meet the stated phone requirements.
The stream becomes slow when a game opens
The published VTube Studio minimum leaves little room for other software. Close unnecessary browser tabs and overlays, reduce game settings, simplify OBS or Streamlabs browser sources and test the scene before going live. If the problem persists, use a computer with more than the 6 GB RAM and 4 GB VRAM recommended tier or move either the game or the streaming workload to another machine.
